"And Solomon, my son, learn to know the God of your ancestors intimately. Worship and serve him with your whole heart and a willing mind. For the LORD sees every heart and knows every plan and thought. If you seek him, you will find him. But if you forsake him, he will reject you forever. 1 Chronicles 28:9 NLT

What kind of driver are you? The reality is, no one wants to sit idling behind distracted drivers whose phone conversations and text messages cause them to miss green lights. Once they start moving, their distracted driving can be dangerous.

That’s true for your faith too.

First Chronicles makes it clear God searches every thought and motive of every man. Only Jesus’ perfect thoughts and motives, given at the cross to humanity, provide true fellowship with God. Only when believers examine their thoughts and motives impartially can they reroute distractions and avoid the crashes that shadow unengaged minds.

Unengaged minds create thoughtless reactions to current events, political topics, social movements, and ministries. Luke says that a riot rocked a major city and the masses gathered, yet “most of the people did not even know why they were there” (Acts 19:32 NIV).

It’s tempting to follow downhill ruts in a thoughtless, aftermarket approach to life. Then again, the repair costs can be demoralizing.

A focused mind helps you grow closer to the One who loved you first, and who turns “the desert into pools of water and the parched ground into flowing springs” (Psalm 107:35 NIV). That road trip is worth all the mental effort it requires.

Prayer: Lord, help me engage my mind so my thoughts and motives will intentionally honor You.
