The High Priest before Jesus never finished their work. When the peoples atonement, by way of the Old Covenant sacrificial system, was complete for the year, it ended with the Day of Atonement ( Yom Kippur). The very next day the High Priest would start his year long tasks again in preparation of atonement for participants sins. In the portion of the temple where he worked, there where no chairs, signifying that his work was never done. Hebrews 9:22....Also, with this Old Covenant contract with his people, God would just passover or " cover-over" the people's former (past) sins. Nothing to do with future sins until you completed the next year Yom Kippur.
Jesus changed all that; he was the everlasting atonement because he sat down at the right hand of the father signifying his work was finished. He did not pass over former sins but he took away all sins past, present and future. 1 John 3:5
Supporting verses:
1 John 2:1
1 John 2:2
Romans 8:1
