Mark 12:41 And He sat down opposite the treasury, and began observing how the people were putting money into the treasury; and many rich people were putting in large sums.
Mark 12:42 A poor widow came and put in two small copper coins, which amount to a cent.
Mark 12:43 Calling His disciples to Him, He said to them, "Truly I say to you, this poor widow put in more than all the contributors to the treasury;
Mark 12:44 for they all put in out of their surplus, but she, out of her poverty, put in all she owned, all she had to live on."
Luke 21:1; And He looked up and saw the rich putting their gifts into the treasury.
Luke 21:2; And He saw a poor widow putting in two small copper coins.
Luke 21:3; And He said, "Truly I say to you, this poor widow put in more than all of them;
Luke 21:4; for they all out of their surplus put into the offering; but she out of her poverty put in all that she had to live on."
I've heard this preached on a number of times over the years. With several different spins on it.
Of course there are the televagelists who tells us "God wants 'ALL' your money". Just make your checks out to me and I'll make sure He gets it.
But maybe this passage isn't just about money. Maybe it's about being willing to give even when it hurts... or maybe "especially" when it hurts.
So does God want all your money? No... it's worse than that. He wants ALL of you.
I saw a picture on a T-shirt a while back, I suppose it was meant to be humorous. It had a picture of Abraham about to sacrifice Isaac, and Abraham is saying to himself..
"I'm glad He just asked for my son, and not my bank account".
But I wonder how many Christians really feel this way?
So then, if it's not just money... what DOES God want from us?
Matt 22:37; And He said to him, " 'YOU SHALL LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, AND WITH ALL YOUR SOUL, AND WITH ALL YOUR MIND.'
Mark 12:30; AND YOU SHALL LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, AND WITH ALL YOUR SOUL, AND WITH ALL YOUR MIND, AND WITH ALL YOUR STRENGTH.'
Luke 10:27; And he answered, "YOU SHALL LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, AND WITH ALL YOUR SOUL, AND WITH ALL YOUR STRENGTH, AND WITH ALL YOUR MIND; AND YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF."
God doesn't want all your money... He wants ALL of you. All your heart, all your soul, all your mind, and all your strength.
The widow gave all she had. How many of us can say we gave all we had... (even if it wasn't money).
