The righteous man cares for the rights of the poor, But the wicked man has no interest in such knowledge. Proverbs 29:7 AMPC

According to the US Census Bureau’s website, poverty is a genuine problem in America. In 2017, 39.7 million people were in poverty. That year, 9.2 percent of Americans aged sixty-five and older were below the poverty line. The Compassion International website says, “Eleven children under age 5 die every minute, and 35 mothers die during childbirth every hour” worldwide.

The righteous man knows and cares for the rights of the poor. A couple of other translations say he cares about “justice for the poor” (NIV) and “the cause of the poor” (KJV). The context of the verse is a reference to the judicial system and righteous judges. The rights of the poor are not to be trampled on, so you have a role to play in being their advocate.

You can help the poor find good representation. You can contribute to Christian legal organizations like the American Center for Law and Justice. You can write or speak to your representatives. Or you can get involved in setting up some sort of advocacy through your church.

Prayer: Lord, I’ve often helped the poor financially, but I haven’t focused as much attention on becoming an advocate for their rights. Give my family direction about how we can do so.
