Actions You Regret

King Herod was deeply disturbed when he heard this, as was everyone in Jerusalem. Matthew 2:3 NLT

Herod was made a king. His heart demanded that he stay in power. When told that there was a new king born in Israel, his thoughts turned toward finding a way to eliminate the threat. He acted on a vile thought born deep in his heart and chose to murder children.

The bible is clear, the heart that lies to you desperately seeks opportunities to identify wickedness and then to engage in that wickedness without ever understanding why (see Jeremiah 17).

This may be why any resolution you make this new year will be harder than you think. Your mind may agree that it’s a worthy goal, but your heart may object, lie, and desperately seek a way to derail your best intentions. You’ve been that strategy work in your own life before. It never ends the way you planned.

There will always be a combination of factors that leave you seeking a good solution, but when the heart and mind don’t agree, then the action you take will often be an action you regret.

Prayer: Father, it’s easy to condemn someone like Herod, who made a horrible decision. And it’s just as easy to think I should receive mercy when I make a poor decision. Help my mind and my heart to agree with You so that my actions look more like Your plan.
