The reading of the Bible through from Genesis to Revelation is very good advice. My hubby does that each year.
I read it through but using a Bible reading plan. I have read it through chronilogically as well. I prefer the reading plans which have you reading Old Testament and New Testament and the same time and you read through entire books not just passages. Just not completely in the same order as the Bible layout.
I also like to have two versions when I read. As my second version I have used the Amplified. I use it when a passage seems difficult to understand I will then read it again in the Amplified to try and get a different wording and it tends to help get a better comprehension of what I have just read.
As a new Christian I attended an Anglican Church. If I hadn't gone to Church each week and a mid-week Bible
Study I would not have been encouraged in my newly found faith plus I wouldn't have stuck it out with my Bible reading. I needed to be accountable and having Bible Study which required at least reading the scripture we were to study BACK THEN forced me to open the Bible. Took me a few years to get into the habit of Bible reading for myself each day and then I found I wanted to read the Bible.
People are different something works for you but not for me.
My hubby very much likes to just read the Bible cover to cover each time, has for years now.
However I do agree a thorough reading of the Bible from start to finish does help get you into what the Bible is teaching you and not what you think it should be saying because you are taking it in without predetermined ideas.
My Bible Study group (I don't run it just attend), we all like to study an entire book of the Bible from start to finish. We don't do topical studies. We choose a book or a number of books that are connected. Our Bible Study leader likes us to read through the book before we study it. So we read it aloud to each other first and are encouraged to read it entirely by ourselves. I have found reading through a couple of times before studying a book has been very helpful.
