It was the belief in the accountability of man to his maker that made America a great nation. Among those earlier leaders was Daniel Webster whose blazing eyes and fiery oratory often held the Senate spellbound. In those days the Congress was composed of strong, noble statesmen who carried the weight of the nation in their hearts and minds.

Someone asked: "Mr. Webster, what do you consider the most serious thought that has ever entered your mind?"

"The most solemn thought that has ever entered my mind is my accountability to my maker," he replied.

Men like that cannot be corrupted and bought. They do not have to worry if someone listens to their telephone calls. What they were in character and in deportment resulted from their belief that they would finally be accountable to God. Echoes from Eden, 130.

"Lord, help me to live my life today in such a way that, should You call me tonight to stand before You and give account, I would have nothing of which I would need to be ashamed. Amen."

As a young man (10 feet tall and bulletproof) I treated sinning lightly, believing that I had all the time in the world to repent and get straight with God. Since then, I've known quite a few people whose lives were snuffed out quickly, unexpectedly, and tragically. Thread topics like this remind me to work out my salvation (Phil 2:12-13) on a daily basis, for "The day of the Lord will come like a thief" (2 Pt 3:10) and I don't want to be caught napping.

I know in my heart that though many of my works be burned I will stand. Yet each day I find myself more in need of His grace, more in love with His heart and more desirous of seeing His will done in my life.
I once found myself trapped in an electrical short from which I could not free myself. As my heart began to slow I remember thinking three things (besides well I guess this is how I am going to die):
1. How much I needed His grace to stand before Him.
2. Was I ready?
3. I wish I had done more for Him.

But He looked down and must have said something like "that cookie ain't baked yet" and provided a way of escape.:embarasse:shock::shade:
