For as the heavens are high above the earth, [So] great is His mercy toward those who fear Him; As far as the east is from the west, [So] far has He removed our transgressions from us. Psalm 103:11-12

Guilt is a peculiar thing. It can cause you to live in never-ending regret, disengage from meaningful relationships, and convince yourself to become exiled from God. However, guilt can serve a far better purpose.

Guilt is an internal indicator that you not only sin, but recognize you have caused hurt, demonstrated selfishness, and disobeyed God. Instead of treating guilt as a divine indictment leading to lifelong punishment, you can use the guilt to keep an appointment with God to tell Him about the sin, express sorrow, and accept forgiveness. Then? Stop feeling guilty.

Romans 8:1 offers this encouragement: “There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit.”

God doesn’t send you a condemning voice that accuses and then is persistent in reminding you of past sin. That’s something you’re your greatest adversary does—often daily. It’s important to recognize that guilt always invites you to come back to God. If you feel condemned then you’ve accepted a perspective that did not come from God.

Guilt offers a homecoming. Stop running away.
