A Song of Ascents. Of David. LORD, my heart is not haughty, Nor my eyes lofty. Neither do I concern myself with great matters, Nor with things too profound for me. Surely I have calmed and quieted my soul, Like a weaned child with his mother; Like a weaned child [is] my soul within me. Psalm 131:1-2 NKJV
Most of us don’t live in a quiet world. Terms like multitasking, stressed out, and overworked are commonly used to describe our day-to-day experience. But in these verses, from a “song of ascents” (a reference to pilgrims coming uphill to Jerusalem to celebrate a festival), we hear a different tone—a purposeful tone describing the humility that leads to a “quieted” soul, a tone that obeys God’s command to “be still, and know that I am God” (Psalm 40:10).
Taking time to pull back from the distractions and demands of life requires intentionality. Jesus Himself had enormous demands on His time once He began His public ministry. Crowds followed Him day and night, looking for healing, bread, or miracles. But to maintain a relationship with His Father, “Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed” (Luke 5:16). Commit time to quiet your heart and wait for God’s “still small voice” (1 Kings 19:12).
Prayer: Lord God, I will quiet my soul to hear You; I will still my mind to know You are God.
