Those who are dominated by the sinful nature think about sinful things, but those who are controlled by the Holy Spirit think about things that please the Spirit. So letting your sinful nature control your mind leads to death. But letting the Spirit control your mind leads to life and peace. Romans 8:5-6 NLT
Although Paul digs into a number of weighty topics in his letter to the Roman church, he also gives his readers some helpful tips to evaluate their spiritual health. By examining their thoughts, they would find out just how much the Holy Spirit was influencing their thinking in comparison to their sinful nature. This self-examination offered immediate guidance for prayer so they could yield their lives to the Holy Spirit.
Take a moment to consider what you’ve thought about over the past day. Do you have a sense that your thoughts are dominated by good things that draw you near to God and help you love your friends, family, and colleagues? Or do you feel absorbed in your own desires, prone to flashes of anger, or preoccupied with the bitter seeds of envy or resentment? Reflection on your thoughts can offer valuable clues about the needs of your soul. You may need to spend more time in prayerful surrender to the Holy Spirit, asking God to work in your life and to guide your thoughts.
Prayer: Holy Spirit, help me to see the state of my thoughts with clarity, and guide me toward Your purpose today.
