God gives us a lot of good things. In fact...
Jas 1:17; Every good thing given and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shifting shadow.
But is it possible God gives us some things we shouldn't want? Is it possible sometimes God gives us what WE want, instead of what we should have?
Is it possible, if we keep denying our sin and refuse to repent, God will just give us what we want? In Romans 1, we see God giving people who know him and his laws (ordinances)
over to their sinful nature because they refuse to repent.
Rom 1:24; Therefore God gave them over in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, so that their bodies would be dishonored among them.
Rom 1:26; For this reason God gave them over to degrading passions; for their women exchanged the natural function for that which is unnatural,
Rom 1:28; And just as they did not see fit to acknowledge God any longer, God gave them over to a depraved mind, to do those things which are not proper,
The fact is, sin can harden our hearts.
Heb 3:13; But encourage one another day after day, as long as it is still called "Today," so that none of you will be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin.
We can sin so often, that we just get numb to it, we quit seeing it as sin. The Bible says our conscience gets seared over.
1 Tim 4:2; by means of the hypocrisy of liars seared in their own conscience as with a branding iron,
In the Old Testament, God told Moses to tell Pharaoh to let his people go over and over again. But Pharaoh's heart was hardened.
Exod 7:13; Yet Pharaoh's heart was hardened, and he did not listen to them, as the LORD had said.
Exod 7:22; But the magicians of Egypt did the same with their secret arts; and Pharaoh's heart was hardened, and he did not listen to them, as the LORD had said.
Exod 8:15; But when Pharaoh saw that there was relief, he hardened his heart and did not listen to them, as the LORD had said.
Exod 8:19; Then the magicians said to Pharaoh, "This is the finger of God." But Pharaoh's heart was hardened, and he did not listen to them, as the LORD had said.
Exod 8:32; But Pharaoh hardened his heart this time also, and he did not let the people go.
Exod 9:7; Pharaoh sent, and behold, there was not even one of the livestock of Israel dead. But the heart of Pharaoh was hardened, and he did not let the people go
It's amazing even though Pharaoh saw, plagues, locusts, frogs, dying cattle, the Nile turn to blood and other signs from God, his heart remained hardened
Finally, God himself hardened Pharaoh's heart.
Exod 9:12; And the LORD hardened Pharaoh's heart, and he did not listen to them, just as the LORD had spoken to Moses.
Exod 10:1; Then the LORD said to Moses, "Go to Pharaoh, for I have hardened his heart and the heart of his servants, that I may perform these signs of Mine among them,
Exod 10:20; But the LORD hardened Pharaoh's heart, and he did not let the sons of Israel go.
Exod 10:27; But the LORD hardened Pharaoh's heart, and he was not willing to let them go.
Exod 11:10; Moses and Aaron performed all these wonders before Pharaoh; yet the LORD hardened Pharaoh's heart, and he did not let the sons of Israel go out of his land.
Exod 14:8; The LORD hardened the heart of Pharaoh, king of Egypt, and he chased after the sons of Israel as the sons of Israel were going out boldly.
This didn't just happen to Pharaoh, there were others also
Ezek 7:19; 'They will fling their silver into the streets and their gold will become an abhorrent thing; their silver and their gold will not be able to deliver them in the day of the wrath of the LORD. They cannot satisfy their appetite nor can they fill their stomachs, for their iniquity has become an occasion of stumbling.
Ezek 7:20; 'They transformed the beauty of His ornaments into pride, and they made the images of their abominations and their detestable things with it; therefore I will make it an abhorrent thing to them.
Deut 2:30; "But Sihon king of Heshbon was not willing for us to pass through his land; for the LORD your God hardened his spirit and made his heart obstinate, in order to deliver him into your hand, as he is today.
Heb 10:26; For if we go on sinning willfully after receiving the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins,
Sometimes people refuse to see their sin for what it is, sometimes God gives them over to it, and they no longer see it as sin.
1 Jn 1:8' If we say that we have no sin, we are deceiving ourselves and the truth is not in us.
John 12:40; "HE HAS BLINDED THEIR EYES AND HE HARDENED THEIR HEART, SO THAT THEY WOULD NOT SEE WITH THEIR EYES AND PERCEIVE WITH THEIR HEART, AND BE CONVERTED AND I HEAL THEM."
