A Pentecostal Phenomenon?

Greetings brothers and sisters

What is your understanding of being 'Slain in the Spirit'

Are there any scriptures that support it at all ?
I don't know of any

Or is it just a false charismatic pentecostal phenomenon?

Just adding in here....I am not criticising in any way but just seeking others viewpoints and a better understanding.

Thank you

I thought I would be cheeky and tag some of you Bible Study regulars as I would really value a few thoughts on this :)

From what I understand of "slain in the Spirit," it is presented as something where the Spirit supposedly takes over a person's body and causes that person to fall. What I have always been taught with regard to this is that the Holy Spirit does not take over our bodies so that we have no control, whereas evil spirits do possess people and take over their bodies. The fruit of the Spirit is self-control. God's grace teaches us to live self-controlled lives. The Holy Spirit does do some powerful things in our lives, which are done in the Spirit and not in the flesh, but we still have the ability to yield to the Spirit or not. If we are out-of-control, that is not of the Spirit, I believe, though I am not speaking of man's interpretation of our actions, but if truly we believe a spirit took over our bodies and we had no control. That is why we are taught not to get drunk with wine (out-of-control), but we are to be filled with the Spirit.

The Lord God will not take control of anybodies life unless they first yield themselves over to him of their own free will. We are to offer our bodies as living sacrifices unto God which is our spiritual form of worship.

2Co 5:14.. For the love of Christ controls us, because we have concluded this: that one has died for all, therefore all have died;

Eze 36:27.. And I will put my Spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes and be careful to obey my rules.

Even Jesus Christ the Son of God said he could do nothing on his own!!!! (John 5:30)

John 5:30.. I can of mine own self do nothing: as I hear, I judge: and my judgment is just; because I seek not mine own will, but the will of the Father which hath sent me.

In charismatic churches, people come forward and the pastor/elder slaps his palm against the forehead of the person, which triggers a response where they "fall backward" (assistants are behind to "catch" the person). Mostly I consider it to be a show, as that is what the person is "supposed to do" when they go forward. I can remember as a child going to the local Foursquare church where people were "rolling around on the floor". Not much has changed.

The phrase 'Slain in the Spirit' is not in the bible...The word 'Rapture' is not in the bible though we all acknowledge this event will happen...There are many things/ terms/words we use on a regular basis as Christians that are not in the bible, so why do we only say "it's not in the bible" for things we are against? Look here...Although the term 'slain in the spirit' is not written specifically the concept is there...
John 18:5-7 (CJB)
5 “Yeshua from Natzeret,” they answered. He said to them, “I AM.” Also standing with them was Y’hudah, the one who was betraying him. 6 When he said, “I AM,” they went backward from him and fell to the ground. 7 So he inquired of them once more, “Whom do you want?” and they said, “Yeshua from Natzeret.” Jesus revealed. I AM he and boom they were all prostrate on the ground..

Daniel 10:9-10 Then I heard the sound of his words, and as I heard the sound of his words, I fell on my face in deep sleep with my face to the ground.
And behold, a hand touched me and set me trembling on my hands and knees.
At the sound of the Word of God Daniel was on the ground. Boom! As though dead?

Acts 9:3-4 Now as he went on his way, he approached Damascus, and suddenly a light from heaven flashed around him.
And falling to the ground he heard a voice saying to him, 'Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me?'

As soon as the glory of God hit him, Paul was on the ground..was he awake or did he hear Jesus talking to him aloud? If it was aloud why did none of his retinue hear it?

Rev 1:17 When I saw him, I fell at his feet as though dead. Slain in the spirit?

Matthew 28:2-4 (CJB)
2 Suddenly there was a violent earthquake, for an angel of Adonai came down from heaven, rolled away the stone and sat on it. 3 His appearance was like lightning, and his clothes were as white as snow. 4 The guards were so terrified at him that they trembled and became like dead men.

The Roman guards too were unable to stand in the presence of the Spirit of God

None of these examples are to do with what charismatics call slain in the Spirit.
What you quote above are merely examples of people fainting or falling down through dread and fear. A natural reaction, nothing spiritual.
As for the Daniel verses
I fell on my face in deep sleep with my face to the ground.
this is a deep reverential expression of worship also expressed by Abraham and others who lay themselves prostrate down on the ground in awe.

Slain in the Spirit is none of the above, but is charismatic out-of-order hoo-haa experienced by those Pentecostals who refuse to submit to the
discipline of the word, and allow emotion and excitement in the flesh to prevail.

The New testament from Acts to Jude clearly declares that when people received the indwelling Holy Ghost they spoke in a new tongue - that is
they are able to pray in the Spirit - "Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels,"... praying in a new spiritual language given by God.
Converts receive the TRUTH that is Jesus, that is the gospel, that is the Holy Spirit and then fulfill all the prophecies pertaining to God putting his Spirit
into our hearts and minds, a new covenant, a new and living way unto righteous living, becoming new persons in Christ Jesus.

This does not require lots of emotion and carry on, or dancing in the aisles, or falling down and rolling on the floor.
No rather it requires simply believing the full apostolic gospel of salvation and doing it.

Deep sleep is a form of worship....Hmmmm New one on me.

Nonetheless none of us has any right to say God will not lay someone down to speak to them intimately.

Thank you for your contributions to the thread.
It is an interesting conversation

What I witnessed did not appear to be charismatic out of control hoo- haa. Rather that a few rather conservative folks just fell during get some quite powerful intensive prayer. There was no dancing or out of control behaviours going on that may have led to a charismatic frenzy.

Yes I believe this is correct.
I don't quite understand what went on, it hasn't happened again since.
I trust the Lord will lead and reveal His truth on these matters

If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him. But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering.
