A Mustard Seed

The story is told of a man who planted a tiny seed in the middle of a dense forest. There were huge trees, bushes and tall grasses all around. The poor little seed was slow to grow and took a great deal of watering and care. It was so tiny that an earthworm looked as big as a Tyrannosaurus Rex.

Time went on --- floods and fires tried to remove it but the tiny seed hung on. Shovels tried to dislodge it but the tiny seed endured. And when it looked like the life of the tiny seed was going to be snuffed out --- it sprouted.

But sprouting brought new dangers. Insects, lack of moisture and very few nutrients --- through it all the tiny seed became a seedling. But seedlings have their own challenges --- enough sunlight, competition for moisture with bigger trees --- and nocturnal animals that snack on seedlings.

But the seedling endured. Soon months became years and the
seedling became a fine looking young tree. But the storms of life in the forms of hail, tornados and ice continually challenged the young tree. Through it all the tree survived and prospered.

Then one day --- the tiny seed that became a seedling ---
that became a fine looking young tree --- became one of the
grandest and biggest trees in the forest --- it became the
tree that birds, animals and other foliage were drawn to for
strength.

Matthew 13:31-32
31. Another parable He put forth to them, saying: "The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed, which a man took and sowed in his field,
32. "which indeed is the least of all the seeds; but when it is grown it is greater than the herbs and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the air come and nest in its branches.''

Matthew 17:20-21
20. So Jesus said to them, "Because of your unbelief; for assuredly, I say to you, if you have faith as a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, `Move from here to there,' and it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you.
21. "However, this kind does not go out except by prayer and fasting.''

Dear sister,

This is an excellent post. I longed to see something like this about faith for a long time. Yes, indeed Jesus wants us to have faith as a mustard seed.

When Jesus mentioned the word 'mustard seed', He wasn't really refering to the size of the seed, He was refering to the toughness of the seed when it is planted. Mustard, when it is planted sticks firm to the ground. No matter what you may try to do to destroy it (or even uproot it), it will come back again and start growing.

Jesus wants our faith to be tough and firm as a mustard seed.

God bless you.

Thank you so much for sharing that Jonah...
