The LORD swore an oath to David with a promise he will never take back: "I will place one of your descendants on your throne. If your descendants obey the terms of my covenant and the laws that I teach them, then your royal line will continue forever and ever." Psalm 132:11-12 NLT
No man could ever fully keep the Law given to Moses. Even the great psalm writer and shepherd of Israel, David, to who God swore an oath in today’s reading, fell woefully short. David, the one about whom the prophet Samuel said, “The Lord has sought out a man after his own heart” (1 Samuel 13:14), would later in life commit both adultery and murder. “If your descendants obey,” warned the Lord—but if David himself couldn’t keep the covenant and laws of God, what hope would any of his descendants have? None---except for One.
To the virgin Mary, a descendant of David, the angel Gabriel spoke of the child she would bear, saying, “He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David” (Luke 1:32). Jesus perfectly obeyed the Law, bringing it to an end as a means of gaining righteousness (Romans 10:4), and fulfilled all the terms of God’s covenant. Jesus is eternal King, Son of David, and the promise God will never take back!
