But You, O Lord, [are] a God full of compassion, and gracious, Longsuffering and abundant in mercy and truth. Psalm 86:15

Bible commentator Matthew Henry believed that David didn't write this psalm "under any particular occasion," but instead, it was a go-to prayer for him whenever he was in a time of need. David was a man after God's own heart, but he was also a grave sinner--one who probably needed to remind himself frequently that God is compassionate and slow to anger.

If you grew up with a father figure who ruled with an iron fist, or if you attended a church in which rules were more important than your relationship with Christ, you may still struggle to have a correct understanding of God's nature. You might see Him as an overbearing deity who is just waiting for you to mess up so He can bring the hammer down on you. But this isn't who God is. Instead, He's everything David describes in today's verse and more.

This would be a great verse to write in the front pages of your Bible so you can turn to it frequently. And you might want to incorporate it into your daily prayers as you seek to reorient your view of God's loving nature.

Prayer: Father, help me to see You and Your character rightly. Help me to see you in the same light that David--himself a grave sinner--saw You.
