<< 1 Peter 1 >>
King James Version
________________________________________
1Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, to the strangers scattered throughout Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia, 2Elect according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through sanctification of the Spirit, unto obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ: Grace unto you, and peace, be multiplied.

First Peter is a letter to Gentile believers that were scattered throughout the Asian continent. It should be wondered how a single letter could be expected to be delivered to such an audience.

The recipients were Gods elect or chosen.

  • Chosen
    • Through sanctification of the spirit
      • Unto obedience
      • Unto the sprinkling of the blood of Christ
Those who God has chosen are they who through process of sanctification become obedient unto the Word of God, walking in its light, and therefore receive the sprinkling of the blood of Christ. If you do not fit this description of the obedient, sanctified believer then you will not be one of the few chosen that Jesus spoke of when he said “for many are called but few chosen.”.

3Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,

It was God the Father who raised up Jesus from the dead because Jesus was righteous and it was not possible that death could hold him. This resurrection of Jesus is the reason that those who have become obedient through sanctification have hope, but only the obedient have this hope.

4To an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you,

The inheritance spoken of refers to the Holy City Jerusalem where Jesus has gone to prepare a place for each of his disciples who are obedient unto him. As with any reservation, you need to show up in order to participate. This city, however, is not staying in heaven but rather destined to be part of the new earth where God will dwell with Jesus his son and all of his brethren.

5Who are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.

Faith is given unto man through the gentle interaction of God with man. It can begin simply by looking at the creation of the universe or a person preaching the gospel. Faith as the bible says is the substance of things unseen and the evidence of things hoped for. Our hope is the resurrection of the just, which is salvation that is in Jesus Christ. Those who follow Christ, follow by faith that he is the righteousness of God manifest in the flesh and that by walking as he walked, they can have boldness in the day of judgment.

6Wherein ye greatly rejoice, though now for a season, if need be, ye are in heaviness through manifold temptations: 7That the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perisheth, though it be tried with fire, might be found unto praise and honour and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ:

We rejoice in faith even though our present state is wrought with temptations. But as James said, happy is he that endures through temptations for when he is approved he will receive the crown of life. We must be careful not to fall into the trap of comforting those who continuously fall into sin as if it won’t matter on the day of judgment as it may be a matter of life and death, eternally.

8Whom having not seen, ye love; in whom, though now ye see him not, yet believing, ye rejoice with joy unspeakable and full of glory:9Receiving the end of your faith, even the salvation of your souls.

Those who through patient continuance in well doing shall achieve the promise of eternal life. This is a reason to have joy unspeakable, knowing that the end of resisting sin unto blood or even unto death is salvation of your soul.

10Of which salvation the prophets have inquired and searched diligently, who prophesied of the grace that should come unto you: 11Searching what, or what manner of time the Spirit of Christ which was in them did signify, when it testified beforehand the sufferings of Christ, and the glory that should follow. 12Unto whom it was revealed, that not unto themselves, but unto us they did minister the things, which are now reported unto you by them that have preached the gospel unto you with the Holy Ghost sent down from heaven; which things the angels desire to look into.

Peter now is more specific about the salvation that has been spoken of that these chosen ones will receive at the end of their faith that keeps them by Gods power, as they walk in the faith of faithful Abraham. All the Old Testament prophets who partook in the anointing of the Holy Spirit searched out the message of salvation.

13Wherefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and hope to the end for the grace that is to be brought unto you at the revelation of Jesus Christ; 14As obedient children, not fashioning yourselves according to the former lusts in your ignorance: 15But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation; 16Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy.

Having now covered the reasons behind why men are chosen by God for salvation, he reinforces the idea that obedience is the only way. Obedience that is Holiness in all behavior.

17And if ye call on the Father, who without respect of persons judgeth according to every man's work, pass the time of your sojourning here in fear: 18Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers; 19But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot: 20Who verily was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you, 21Who by him do believe in God, that raised him up from the dead, and gave him glory; that your faith and hope might be in God.

Peter is careful to bring the attention back to where it belongs, God the Father. He is the one we call upon. Him who sent Jesus, who obeyed his Father, to die for us on the cross of Calvary. Our hope is in him who raised Jesus up from the dead, God.

22Seeing ye have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit unto unfeigned love of the brethren, see that ye love one another with a pure heart fervently: 23Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever.

Obedience to God brings love for other Christians. And another thing of note here is the very fact that it is the Word of God that brings about the rebirth that Jesus spoke to Nicodemus about.

24For all flesh is as grass, and all the glory of man as the flower of grass. The grass withereth, and the flower thereof falleth away: 25But the word of the Lord endureth for ever. And this is the word which by the gospel is preached unto you.

A call back to Isaiah confirming the purity of the Word of God. Although men have always through vain philosophy worked to keep peace between people without God, only the pure Word of God can bring about true goodness. The Word of God, as sharp as it is, discerns the thoughts and intents of the hearts of men and exposes their selfish reasons for all that they do and reveals true love, the love of God which surpasses knowledge. The love of the Gospel itself.

To summarize the chapter is to say that there are those who are chosen of God who openly receive the Holy Spirit without resisting him. These are they who wash their garments in the blood of the Lamb and end up clothed with true righteousness as they purify themselves even as Jesus is pure. It isn’t a onetime prayer followed by a life of haphazard periods of walking in obedience and falling away but is instead a bold charge toward the face of God seeking and hungering after his righteousness while fending off all temptation to do evil, so that in the end you might here those words, “Well done good and faithful servant, enter into the joy of your Lord”.

May you hear these words, after you have submitted yourself wholly unto the Gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God, who died for you and commands that you now pick up your own cross, being obedient unto the Holy Scriptures, which are the Word of God.

In Jesus Name,

Gary

Those who through patient continuance in well doing shall achieve the promise of eternal life. This is a reason to have joy unspeakable, knowing that the end of resisting sin unto blood or even unto death is salvation of your soul.

Salvation comes only by the blood of Jesus, Gary.
We can't save our selfs thats why Jesus died for us. He didnt die for nothing, He died for our sins.

Spirit, Soul, body

The word soul was used to describe a person.
He was a lost soul............

Describe more than one person.
There are many happy souls here today.

and to describe a part of man.

1Th 5:23 And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

If soul is apart from the spirit of man, and body of man. Would the context of some of these scriptures change?

Heb 10:39 But we are not of them who draw back unto perdition; but of them that believe to the saving of the soul.

1Co 2:11 For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God.

The Heart of man is the spirit, who the man really is, we are spirits.

If the soul connected to the brain be our mind will and emotions. Then what?

Heb 4:12 For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

The Word of God divides the thinking between mans soul, (Mind, will, emotions) with man's spirit (Reborn, created in the Image of God, connected to the Holy Spirit)

It's the Word that separates our thinking from what is in the born again spirit's thinking. This allows us to know if God spoke to us, or is it our own thinking. Someone not in God's word continually would make it hard to tell the difference.

If the spirit is born out of something incorruptible then the spirit of man is saved from corruption, but not the soul.

1Pe 1:23
Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever.

I see many places where we are not saved by works, or anything we do, I see we are born from something that can not be corrupted.
We work out our own salvation in fear and trembling, but what part are we working out? God's plan? Our chance for heaven?

Jas 1:21 Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls

Engrafted means so full and entrenched that the soul can't be persuaded God's word is not true, and our thinking comes in line with God's thinking (The Word)

But that seems like works, and where is Jesus in that picture??

Jesus Is Lord.

we are saved only once. by the word of God. It cant be we need word to be yet again saved. so this notion if for the unsaved.

Mike, Let me begin by stating that you lost me from the beginning but I am going to try to piece this together below. Maybe I will understand you better by the end of studying your remarks as was the 'idle words' case.

The soul is the very 'life center' of a man. It is the portion of man that will end up receiving the end of the judgment that is cast upon him at the judgment seat of Christ. The soul is the person himself that is within the body that is animated by the spirit. It is with the spirit that a soul can serve God and overcome sin which is in the body (not to be confused with the Holy Spirit, that when a man has is connected to his own spirit as a man is to his wife when they are one flesh).

If soul is apart from the spirit of man, and body of man. Would the context of some of these scriptures change?

They are and no they don't.

Heb 10:39 But we are not of them who draw back unto perdition; but of them that believe to the saving of the soul.

Amen, a soul is saved through sanctification of the spirit that drives his body so that he does not live in sin.

1Co 2:11 For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God.

Amen, our soul searches Gods Holy Spirit for answers by his own spirit.

The Heart of man is the spirit, who the man really is, we are spirits.

I disagree, the soul is the man who has a spirit given by God to him for the purpose of animating and driving his body.

If the soul connected to the brain be our mind will and emotions. Then what?

You sound confused here. The brain is part of the body. Our mind has two parts, one carnal, the other spirit. Our soul serves God in the spirit of our mind.

Heb 4:12 For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

Amen, Ananias found this out the hard way when the word of God spoken by Peter divided his soul and spirit and he gave up the spirit right there on the spot.

The Word of God divides the thinking between mans soul, (Mind, will, emotions) with man's spirit (Reborn, created in the Image of God, connected to the Holy Spirit)

The spirit was given to man by God and he became a living soul. God has a soul himself (Isaiah 42) and we are created in his likeness for sure. Thinking that we are our spirit is an error that causes people to believe that we are already eternal beings.

It's the Word that separates our thinking from what is in the born again spirit's thinking. This allows us to know if God spoke to us, or is it our own thinking. Someone not in God's word continually would make it hard to tell the difference.

My spirit isn't born again. I am. I lead a life that was guided by my carnal mind to fulfill all my will until I was confronted with God and his Son Jesus Christ. Upon hearing and believing the gospel, having been dead in trespass and sin, I was quicken in the spirit unto life and began to serve God with my spirit leading my body instead of my carnality ruling unobstructed.

If the spirit is born out of something incorruptible then the spirit of man is saved from corruption, but not the soul.

The spirit of man is not his own, it belongs to God and will return unto him upon death. Mans spirit will be given back to him upon resurrection to animate his spiritual body where his soul will reside.

1Pe 1:23
Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever.

The soul is born again.

I see many places where we are not saved by works, or anything we do, I see we are born from something that can not be corrupted.
We work out our own salvation in fear and trembling, but what part are we working out? God's plan? Our chance for heaven?

We are not saved by works, we have already blown it. We can only condemn ourselves as unbelievers by our works and be sent to hell for them. We are born again by the word of God, the words of life, and regenerated by the Holy Spirit of God that indwells believers. We work out our salvation by truly believing what God has already said is true such as drunkards will not inherit the kingdom of heaven, nor homosexuals or a whole list of other sinful behaviors that might entice one to do. Put a naked woman in front of me and see how much fear and trembling comes upon me as I run from her like there is no tomorrow, knowing what God has said about fornicators.

In the end of all things nobody will ask what you believed. God will look at your works, which tell the whole story about what you believe, and he will reward you according to your works. Being forgiven of our sin by applying the blood of Christ comes with a price tag that is unimaginable, as we must give our whole selves unto God. Many are invited but few will be chosen.

The engrafted word to be received with meekness is the word of God that is to be embedded in the soil of the heart where it can be watered and explode into growth when God gives the increase. It washes the soul and spirit of a man and sanctifies them in its truth, IF, they actually receive it and NOT interpret it in ways that cause it to have none effect.

But that seems like works, and where is Jesus in that picture??

Jesus Is Lord.

Jesus never left the picture. He came and lived the life we needed to see, which was the righteousness of God manifest in the flesh. He died the death we needed him to so that all sin could be paid for and every soul bought by God. We are not only saved by his death (the atonement) but also by his life (his intersession that is only for those who obey him). Our work must = obedience. Jesus said it best in John chapter 3, "And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil." The men who love the light will live in the light and ultimately in the end will have 'eternal life'.

In Jesus Name,

Gary

We can't save our selfs thats why Jesus died for us. He didnt die for nothing, He died for our sins.

You repeat the same things over and over to me. Again I say unto you, I agree, we cannot save ourselves. We can only condemn ourselves through works of unbelief. We must do works of belief in order to receive the atonement of the blood of Christ. We must cease doing our own works (what we believe is right in our own eyes) and do the works of God (what is right in his eyes). Our works will only destroy us and send us to hell.

In Jesus Name,

sorry for the confusion.

You sound confused here. The brain is part of the body. Our mind has two parts, one carnal, the other spirit. Our soul serves God in the spirit of our mind.
Ok, I just wrote that as some have proved our brain is just the gate between the physical world, and a Soul or a spirit because there is no way to have the brain function being just flesh tissue in the manner it does, there has to be something else there not seen.

So, would the soul be the man part himself? The flesh part?
It's my fault as I just threw a bunch of scriptures out there.

I always saw the soul as the emotion, mind and will part, and that we are spirits created in God's image, who God also being a spirit. So I am going "Again" over your answers as I feel I gave way to much stuff to answer properly.

And the spirit you said is not eternal, meaning does not live forever. So that mean Hell is not eternal? Or just the soul goes to Hell?

Once again, sorry I was not more focused, but thank you for wading through all of it.

Jesus Is Lord.

Personally, I don't think man understands the half of it.

So, would the soul be the man part himself? The flesh part?

No the flesh part is the vessel that contains the two, soul and spirit. We are not our bodies but the we that we are is the soul.

I agree, this is entirely easy to become confused over. I suggest going to blueletterbible and reading all of the scriptures for the soul and then all of them for the spirit, asking God to give you clarity on what is what.

And the spirit you said is not eternal, meaning does not live forever. So that mean Hell is not eternal? Or just the soul goes to Hell?

Did I say the spirit is not eternal? If so I misspoke. The spirit is from God and is eternal but it isn't who we are. It is that which animates us. More emotion comes from spirits than anywhere else...just fill in the blank, spirit of ______ (fear, confusion, anger, wrath).

Once again, sorry I was not more focused, but thank you for wading through all of it.

Jesus Is Lord.

It is not a problem, because I know you really do care.

Gary

Got it!!!

I really don't want to bother you again, but one more question, I understand now more of where your coming from.

No the flesh part is the vessel that contains the two, soul and spirit. We are not our bodies but the we that we are is the soul.

So man is a living soul, the whole being of man, man has a spirit born again. The soul needs renewed and worked on.

I thought there was a scripture that says the spirit goes back to God, but it could have been something I just heard somewhere, and I could not find it.

I am going to have to go back and look at all these soul and spirit scriptures again, and also wonder if where they capitalized Spirit (In some places) did it really mean Man's spirit?

Thank you Gary....

Jesus Is Lord.

still its the same but with different wording, your still trying to save your self by doing works.

doesnt matter what you call it its still works.

works is works and bible no where tells that we must do works. Or show me where it says you must do God's works to enter heaven?

Or show me where it says you must do God's works to enter heaven?

This is a concept that comes directly out of the book of Hebrews. When read in its entirety, the book sheds lots of light upon the place of works in a believers life. Doing God's works = doing the will of God. This is the act of believing that Jesus Christ is the manifestation of the righteousness of God in the flesh that you may emulate and be righteous as he is righteous, therefore God the Father is just and the justifier of them that believe in Jesus. Jesus came and took away the sacrifices that were made every year for the sins of that year in exchange for doing the will of God after having received the atonement for sin. Our works cannot save us but condemn us as unbelievers.

Gary

i dont really understand this. if you have faith then having no works cant make your faith disapear can it?

One cannot simply have no works. Every deed you do every day is a work. So we all have works. The question lies in whether or not our works justify our faith. Does what we do (works) line up with what we say we believe (faith)? If not our works will condemn us on the day of Judgment as non believers.

I hope this helps.

Gary

that does not answer the question.

and i dont believe works can condem us rom 8:1

and i dont believe works can condem us rom 8:1

Romans 8:1 taken within its context is all about works. To show this let us look at two different translations based in two different Greek manuscripts

<< Romans 8 >>
King James Version
1There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. 2For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death. 3For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh: 4That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. 5For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit. 6For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. 7Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be. 8So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God.

In 8:1 here we see that it is conditioned upon works by stating those who 'walk' (works/deeds) not after the carnal flesh (as spoken of in chapter 7) but after the spirit (that which we have that is contrary to our flesh). It further states that the righteousness which is in the law (seen in the works it produces when followed) is fulfilled in those who do their works according to the spirit and not the carnal flesh. He further states that works of the flesh make one an enemy of God in verse 7. So in the end it is all about works/deeds which we will be judged by (Romans 3) when we come before the judgment seat of Christ.

The NIV is a paraphrased version based upon the Westcot and Hort Greek text. Lets look at what it says.

<< Romans 8 >>
New International Version 1984
Life Through the Spirit

1Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus,a 2because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit of life set me free from the law of sin and death. 3For what the law was powerless to do in that it was weakened by the sinful nature,b God did by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful man to be a sin offering.c And so he condemned sin in sinful man,d 4in order that the righteous requirements of the law might be fully met in us, who do not live according to the sinful nature but according to the Spirit.

5Those who live according to the sinful nature have their minds set on what that nature desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires. 6The mind of sinful man is death, but the mind controlled by the Spirit is life and peace; 7the sinful mind is hostile to God. It does not submit to God’s law, nor can it do so. 8Those controlled by the sinful nature cannot please God.

Here we see the first 4 verses culminate in focus upon the works/deeds of the believer too. The same emphasis of living according to the spirit and not the carnal flesh is emphasis. We continue to see the emphasis on works/deeds in 5-8 by what controls the mind (where all the decisions on how to behave originate). It is pointed out that the carnal nature is hostile (which is the same as enmity) toward God and not subject to that which God commands.

Even though these two are written from entirely different Greek manuscripts, one that completely removes some of the text, they still manage to bring the same message across. It is all about works/deeds that are controlled by a certain part of us, flesh or spirit. To live in the flesh is to inherit corruption. To live in the spirit is to inherit incorruption or eternal life.

Praying God will prepare your heart to receive this,

Gary

Hi Gary

1Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus,a 2because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit of life set me free from the law of sin and death. 3For what the law was powerless to do in that it was weakened by the sinful nature,b God did by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful man to be a sin offering.c And so he condemned sin in sinful man,d 4in order that the righteous requirements of the law might be fully met in us, who do not live according to the sinful nature but according to the Spirit.

So you read this that God sent Jesus to put us straight? so that we would start living for spirit?
i think God could have done that without sending Jesus.

I believe its more likely saying that "And so he condemned sin in sinful man, 4in order that the righteous requirements of the law might be fully met in us"
- so that we have rightneusness of Jesus, so to speak.
And it was Jesus who did away with the law and set us in righteuss "status".

thanks to Jesus we now live according the spirit. because God removed the guilt part so that we can live without condemnation.

8Those controlled by the sinful nature cannot please God.

still we may live after the flesh but God has made us spiritual which was not possible before. Before we were hostile to God because we were only in flesh nature and never in spirit nature.
the hostility is removed now through spirit - which God gave us.

Lets also look at rest of the verses when Paul concludes this spiritutual man part:

Rom 8:7-11 Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be. (8) So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God. (9) But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his. (10)

Paul is saying that Spirit of God is in us and THIS is what makes us spiritual - not really our effort to walk in spirit but being born again of the spirit. Even first verse of the chapter may give us idea that we must always walk in spirit... Paul stated that we are not in flesh because the spirit dwells in us.

And bible states the spirit is given to be troughtout life.

And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness. (11) But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you.

and because of spirit in us we may live spiritually.

Jari, we have a tainted body that sin dwells in. We have a spirit that can stop the sin from manifesting itself. We either employ the spirit or live in the flesh. Yes, Paul says that you are not in the flesh if so be that the spirit of God dwell in you. What your missing is that he isn't saying that when you received the Holy Spirit you are no longer living in the flesh. That is fallacy. Otherwise he would not say just a couple verses later "For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live." He is telling them that they have a choice. Continue in sin and die the death or live in the spirit and have eternal life.

"For if YE live after the flesh. Who? The very ones he is writing too. He says it is possible that though you have received the spirit you can still live in the flesh and die.

Do not err my brother.

i never stated anything contrary to rom 8. Whether we walk after spirit or not does not mean we would not have holy spirit anymore.
and as long as we have Holy spirit we are new spiritual being (born again).
but we may die spiritually but we still God's childs because His spirit dwells in us.
So when Paul says you die if you live after the flesh this does not mean losing salvation. As your born again of God's spirit which is something you have never been before. And that is what makes us spiritual or live in spirit which we have never lived before.

If your living in the spirit, you are living without sin in your life. Is this what your experience has been?
