19 It is commonly understood that this verse is referring toJesus going to the grave and preaching to those who died before He came thesaints of old. It is also understood that it could have been all who diedbefore Christ came. We are bond in a prison of sin before He comes and sets usfree. The grave is viewed as a prison. Sin is also viewed as prison.

We can be made free from both thru Christ, not being boundto sin and passing from this life to the life with Him.

20 No one lived right before they came to faith with theexception of Jesus who never sinned and Adam and Eve who sinned after causingthe fall from perfection and grace. God is patience but there comes a time Godwill punish sin that is not under the blood. Christ came to die and if we receiveHim our sins are covered by His blood and are forgiven because He died on thecross as punishment for our sins. There were only 8 who lived thru the flood.Noah and his family survived because they had faith in the Lord who carriedthem thru the flood, Christ carries us thru our sins to the cross weforgiveness and new life is found.

Yeah, pretty accurate, but have you never read this...

Isa 42:1-7
1 Behold My servant, whom I uphold; Mine elect, in whom My soul delighteth; I have put My spirit upon him: he shall bring forth judgment to the Gentiles.
2 He shall not cry, nor lift up, nor cause his voice to be heard in the street.
3 A bruised reed shall he not break, and the smoking flax shall he not quench: he shall bring forth judgment unto truth.
4 He shall not fail nor be discouraged, till he have set judgment in the earth: and the isles shall wait for his law.
5 Thus saith God the LORD, He That created the heavens, and stretched them out; He That spread forth the earth, and that which cometh out of it; He That giveth breath unto the people upon it, and spirit to them that walk therein:
6 I the LORD have called thee in righteousness, and will hold thine hand, and will keep thee, and give thee for a covenant of the people, for a light of the Gentiles;
7 To open the blind eyes, to bring out the prisoners from the prison, and them that sit in darkness out of the prison house.

That's what Jesus did when He went to the "spirits in prison". He preached The Gospel to them after His death, and led those who believed out of that prison house in the heavenly.

This is another part of that idea Peter was talking about in the 1 Pet.3:18-20 Scripture:

1 Pet 4:5-6
5 Who shall give account to Him That is ready to judge the quick and the dead.
6 For for this cause was the gospel preached also to them that are dead, that they might be judged according to men in the flesh, but live according to God in the spirit.

1 Peter 3:19, 20, (NASB) states: "19-In which also He went and made proclamation to the spirits now in prison, 20-who once were disobedient, when the patience of God kept waiting in the days of Noah, during the construction of the ark, in which a few, that is, eight persons, were brought safely through the water."

Contrary to popular opinion, Peter is not referring to humans who had died and where in the grave before Jesus came to the earth!

Between the time of the sinning of Adam and Eve, and the flood of Noah's day. A unknown number of rebellious angels left their place in heaven, and came down to the earth in materialized fleshly bodies. They had developed a desire to have sexual relations with women. This led to their fathering offspring called Nephilim, who became violent giants and these added to the violence that marked the time before the flood. (Genesis 6:1-7) God did not allow this corruption of mankind to go on. He brought a global flood, which swept away all wicked humans along with the Nephilim. The only humans preserved alive were God's faithful servants Noah and his family in the ark.

However, the rebellious angels escaped destruction at the time of the flood by abandoning their fleshly bodies and returned to the spirit realm as spirit creatures. From this time on they were referred to as demons. When these returned to heaven, they were not allowed back into God's family of faithful angels. Instead, they were cut off from any spiritual enlightenment from God, with only a dark outlook for the future. In a symbolic way, they were confined in a condition of spiritual darkness known as Tartarus. (2 Peter 2:4) These are the spirits Peter is referring to, when Jesus went and made proclamation to the spirits now in prison. The ones who once were disobedient, when the patience of God kept waiting in the days of Noah.

I think the Isaiah 42 and 1 Peter 4 examples speak for theirself in determining the meaning of 1 Pet.3:18-20.
