"I am going where everyone on earth must someday go. Take courage and be a man.” 1 Kings 2:2 NLT
If only. If only Solomon would have heeded his dying father’s counsel to “take courage and be a man.” After all, it takes enduring courage to be a man who will continually “observe the requirements of the Lord your God, and follow all his ways” (1 Kings 2:3).
What requirements? “Keep the decrees, commands, regulations, and laws written in the Law of Moses.” That seems clear enough, but why? “So that you will be successful in all you do and wherever you go” (1 Kings 2:3).
What more could David want? A son who does the same! “If you do this, then the Lord will keep the promise he made to me. He told me, ‘If your descendants live as they should and follow me faithfully with all their heart and soul, one of them will always sit on the throne of Israel’” (1 King 2:4). Again, if only.
Most men vicariously import the “courage” of their favorite sports stars and superheroes.
Today God calls you to be different: “Take courage and be a man,” in both word and deed.
Prayer: Lord, I sometimes feel like a fake, a false representation of a godly man. Push me out of my comfort zone so I can take courage and be a man before week’s end.
