Why are you so rude? Are you a Christian? Do you KNOW what or who love is? Well...brother....I think God said exactly what He meant...Pray privately..not silently....And the Book is full of precedent....I gave some...

I would say this is the closest I know about prayer without words, would be okay.

Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. Romans 8:26 NKJV

For what man knows the things of a man except the spirit of the man which is in him? Even so no one knows the things of God except the Spirit of God. 1 Corinthians 2:11 NKJV

How much more God knowing our thoughts, would know our silent prayers?

But Jesus, knowing their thoughts, said, "Why do you think evil in your hearts? Matthew 9:4 NKJV

Our God truly knows us better than we know ourselves Brother, and hears us whether we can speak or are mute.

Nick Thank you for the thoughtful answer...I really appreciate that...Tell me....Have you ever sat/ knelt/ lay down to pray silently, and once you started praying you could not keep your thoughts straight? You kept getting distracted? I find that if I pray aloud I can only think of one thing at a time. If Satan tried to distract me, he can't get a word in edgewise. Do you find that's so? Jesus said, when He taught us how to pray...

Dear Brother,
That is very good for you and others that may have problems in being distracted when praying silently. I myself don't always pray silently. At times I will pray out loud in the sense that if you were in the room with me you'd be able to hear them. This also brings to mind corporate prayer, when one is in a group. You might have one person leading in prayer, while others are what one would say is lending their Spirit to theirs in praying. At times encouraging verbally and silently. While at other times the group might be praying silently. Is this form of prayer less effective, because it could be considered public prayer could almost be contrary to that which is spoken of in Matt 6:5? I would say no, because I do believe that in the case that Jesus was speaking of there had more to do with the individual motivation behind public prayer and not necessarily public prayer in general which of course He did himself.

Still, I try to allow for how the Spirit moves me to do on how I may pray at any given time. So, is silent prayer something that one can do and still be heard? I believe it is, and see nothing in Scripture that would lead me to believe they won't be.

Thank-you for this subject. We don't look into prayer enough!

Nick, let me ask you...When you pray only in your head, and not with your voice, are you really praying? Or are you only thinking of what you would ask God about? If Jesus spoke His prayers, why would we not? If God spoke the world into existence, and gave us the power of words, why would we not use them? There is a vast difference between thinking and praying.
When Jesus knew the thoughts of those Pharasees...were they praying, or just thinking?
We really need to look at prayer in the context of the power of our words....God talks a lot about our words...they must be important.

Dear Brother,
To answer your first question. Yes I am. Why? Because it's a concerted effort on my part, in heart/spirit that my thoughts are formed to reach out to my Heavenly Father in supplication.
On your second question. Understand that I am not saying that one should not speak prayers. I believe I was pretty clear that I do both and that I see no problem with anyone doing one, or both.
Your third question really makes no logical sense concerning the topic being discussed. I would reply to this, is every word you speak a prayer?

Now my question to you, which is more of a statement. I hope you're not saying that silent prayers cannot be heard. I mentioned it in part before. If what you believe to be true is true. Then those who cannot speak (mute) will never have any prayers heard, because they cannot verbally make sounds necessary to create words. I surely hope this is not what you are saying.

Temper what Scripture says with logic and common sense brother, most especially with Holy Spirit guidance. Do you do this, in fact do most of us do this, and if not are we failing in doing God's will for us?
Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 NKJV

Be at ease Brother on this subject. Our Father in Heaven understands us better then we do ourselves brother. Allow that if our heart/spirit is in the right place, that our prayers/supplications, be they in word or silently in thought are heard!

Words of the mouth are spoken out loud, the heart's meditation is internal; both are offered up before God for his acceptance and pleasure.

God is ALL powerful. When you read T.J. words to yourself (silently), it is also in your mind....He hears!

How is meditation prayer? We meditate on Gods Word but that is not prayer.

Meditation is a consistent reflection upon the Word of God in order to refocus one's mind and heart upon Christ and His Gospel of peace, Its for OUR growth.

Good response! I would like to add something that supports your scripture. GOD says He is Spirit and we must worship Him in Spirit and truth; I don't especially think He means out loud, using words. In your verse, the Spirit helps in action and silence, I don't imagine He speaks out loud either.
