The Calling to preach the Gospel

Romans 10:15 And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things!

I find this to be one of the most clouded and misunderstood topics in the church of Jesus Christ today. If you were to ask your average born again Christian, someone with a real conversion and relationship with God, what is God's ultimate plan for their lives. A good percentage will look at you with a deer in headlights look, and will probably make some obscure Christian cliche comment. The fact is today that God does call men to preach the gospel, that is to become a pastor or a missionary in order to build the kingdom of God.

Who is called to preach?

1 Timothy 2:11-12 proclaims, “A woman should learn in quietness and full submission. I do not permit a woman to teach or to have authority over a man; she must be silent.”

Let's make it clear today that God does not call women to become pastors. We live in the generation of Paula White and Oprah, where "girl power" has infiltrated even through the church. Churches all across America are accepting female preachers in an attempt to reach a broader spectrum of followers, this is not the bible, if a woman ever steps in front of the pulpit to preach know that this is not the will of God. Although God will call women to be the wife of a pastor, which is the highest position a woman can have in the church.

How do I know if I am called to preach?

This is one of the trickiest questions to answer. There is no definitive way a man can know he is called to preach. This is something that is sought after diligently in prayer, but there are different ways in which God calls men.

First is the "Paul's Call". This is where God meets a man in a supernatural way in order to let his calling be known. Moses had this calling, the bible says that God appeared to Moses through a burning bush. Gideon the bible says was out simply doing his job when an angel of God appeared to him to call him. Jeremiah was called while he was "only a child". Paul of Tarsus was visited by the Lord Jesus on the road to Damascus. These are just a few examples of this extreme type of calling, God does still call men today like this, although it is rare.

Second is what you would call "Joshua's call". Joshua the bible says was the servant of Moses who was chosen to lead the children of Israel into the promised land after Moses disobeyed a comand of God. Joshua can best be described as a disciple of Moses, you can read in Exodus 33 the account of Moses' prayer in the tent, where he went into the tent and all the nation saw the cloud outside of the tent where Moses prayed, and after he left the bible says that Joshua "did not depart from the tent". Joshua did nothing special except prove that he was a man of God willing to follow his leader, and God blessed this powerfully.

Thirdly, you know a man of God is called to preach becaue there is a supernatural gifting in him placed by God. This is where many men fall, they "feel" God has called them to preach when He hasn't, they go out into the harvest only to fail miserably and question God. Not all men are called to preach. If you read the book of Ezra, you will find the account of King Cyrus and the rebuilding of the temple of God. Some men went to build the temple, and some stayed behind to support the work of the project. This is how the kingdom of God works, some men will go out into the harvest to do the work of God while some are not called to go but to stay behind. In God’s kingdom, everyone does their part. If you read 1 Samuel 17, you will find that the reason David had the courage to fight Goliath was because God had already helped him to kill a lion and a bear. There are no superheroes in the Kingdom, God gifts men, God prepares men, and He decides who can go and who can’t go.

Prayer

No one can tell you that you are called to preach, not even your pastor. As mentioned this is something that has to be sought after diligently in prayer, if God has called you then other people will more than likely see gifting in you, but pray and seek the face of God.

The apostle Paul said himself in 1 Corinthians 16:9, “woe to me if I do not preach the gospel!” If there is a burning fire inside of your heart to seek the lost souls of men and to preach, then you need to pray and ask God if this is what He has for your life.

Actually, Gods ultimate plan is that we would know Him

And thats no cliche. I find this to be one of the most clouded and misunderstood topics in the church of Jesus Christ today.

The love relationship is why God created us, and that is far more imporant than what we do.

Joh 17:3 And this is eternal life: to know you, the only true God, and the one whom you sent-Jesus Christ.

Really knowing God only comes thru experience as He reveals Himself to you. The calling to preach never bypasses first experiencing God...(tho its oft attempted)
Remember, Paul knew all about God, but he did`nt really know Him until he experienced Him. Sure he could talk about Him, but he could`nt 'preach Christ' without experience. I dont think God met Paul in a supernatural way in order to let his calling be known, rather to let Him know God...and the 'calling' to preach Him is a natural overflow of knowing Him. (Paul might have been heard saying, oh I just cant shut up about HIM ;)

Rom 10:14 How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? (have you believed Him)
and how shall they believe in him whom they have not heard? (have you heard Him?)

Php 3:9 And be found in him...
Php 3:10 That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death;

2Ti 1:12 For I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded...

It seems strange that if God would not want some one to preach the Gospel if he has fire in his heart. I mean why such a flame in heart if your not cabable of preaching or outreaching??
I'm just confused on this...

You post was good read.

God bless.

I disagree...

One of the best commentaries I`ve read on this subject follows (see link)...if you care to read it...

"Paul’s remarks do not forbid a woman “to teach or have authority”, but rather the Gk. word usage and construction of the sentence suggests he is forbidding women to “teach in such a way that oppresses men.” (my own paraphrase)"

That would make this statement make sence:

Gal 3:26 Because you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus.
For all those of you who were given baptism into Christ did put on Christ. There is no Jew or Greek, servant or free, male or female: because you are all one in Jesus Christ

Theology for the Masses Toward an Egalitarian Ecclesia

FN: I have`nt done much reading on the link posted, so I am not endorsing it, simply sharing an excerpt.

I`m not sure if you are confusing the terms 'to pastor' and 'to preach'...or confusing preaching Christ with a career in a pulpit...however I believe all men are called to preach...

I think the failing, is not in the calling, but in the preparation...

If you are talking about standing in a pulpit...well...

Shall a little lamb...being just born and still wet behind the ears, stand up on his wobbly legs and run to the Shepherd, and say let me lead this herd Lord, I AM READY!

Baaa!

1Ti 3:5 For if a man has not the art of ruling his house, how will he take care of the church of God? Not one newly taken into the church, (newborn) for fear that, through his high opinion of himself, he may come into the same sin as the Evil One.

Gal 1:15 But when it pleased God, who separated me from my mother's womb, and called me by his grace,

To reveal his Son in me,that I might preach him among the heathen; immediately I conferred not with flesh and blood.

God has to remove the strong sinew of self before He can use us.

The Shepherd says I AM, and you will be ready when I AM revealed in you. (I preach not I, but Christ)

There has been a lot of sheep destroyed because newborn lambs thought the fact that they were born...and heard a call...meant they were ready to lead...

A.W. Tozer stated, “It is doubtful whether God can bless a man greatly until He [God] has hurt [or broken] him deeply”.

Peter had to learn the lesson of the breaking in of the new born lamb after his calling...and he had to learn this lesson before he was then told to feed the sheep.

Brother ThatGuy,
I want to humbly suggest that the woman at the well preached Jesus to the men in her city.

"The woman then left her waterpot, and went her way into the city, and saith to the men, Come, see a man, which told me all things that ever I did: is not this the Christ? Then they went out of the city, and came unto him" (Jn 4:28-30).

Notice also that the disciples went into the city as well, but didn't preach Jesus.

" For his disciples were gone away unto the city to buy meat"(Jn 4:8).

Because of the "testimony" of the woman revival broke out in this town.

"And many of the Samaritans of that city believed on him for the saying of the woman, which testified, He told me all that ever I did. So when the Samaritans were come unto him, they besought him that he would tarry with them: and he abode there two days. And many more believed because of his own word; And said unto the woman, Now we believe, not because of thy saying: for we have heard him ourselves, and know that this is indeed the Christ, the Saviour of the world" (Jn 4:39-42).

1 Timothy 2:11-12 proclaims, “A woman should learn in quietness and full submission. I do not permit a woman to teach or to have authority over a man; she must be silent.”

Amen, that is the truth. Anyone who don't believe that is rebelling against the word of God. That woman at the well just told those men to go see Christ, she didn't preach a sermon and she wasn't the leader of a church. Women can teach women and children, but not men.

*Sigh*, this is the last place I would expect people to be so technical. You know what I am talking about, I am talking about finding your specific calling that God has for your life. "Faith without works is dead", James 2:20. Faith comes first, and works follow, if you live your whole Christian life on a premise that He will never expect anything of us then you are fooled. What you are speaking of is getting saved, getting saved is step one, it's the journey that follows that is important.

No, what I am speaking of is relationship, and thats not 'step one' thats the entire walk. I know exactly what you are talking about...
and call me overly technical if you will, but I find no premise in scripture for 'finding ones calling', so i`m disagreeing.

You said "then you need to pray and ask God if this is what He has for your life." Do you have scripture for that?

I say pray and ask God to BE your life...what He has planned for you will come naturally. I`m sorry if I cant see laboring in prayer about some special calling from God ...

Find out what God is doing, and join Him there...in your family, your neighborhood, your town....thats what the disciples did..I dont see them praying over wether or not they should find a pulpit to preach behind.
What has 'a burning fire inside of your heart to seek the lost souls of men and to preach'got to do with some special calling anyways pray tell?

What does "preach" mean to you exactly Cody?

1Co 16:19 The churches of Asia salute you. Aquila and Priscilla salute you much in the Lord, with the church that is in their house.

Act 18:26 And he began to speak boldly in the synagogue: whom when Aquila and Priscilla had heard, they took him unto them, and expounded unto him the way of God more perfectly.

Here we find a woman speaking in a leadership role in "church"...and teaching a man...

If scripture appears to contradict itself, we should`nt take what we are reading at face value...but "search to see whether these things be so" (Act 17:11)

Coconut, Aquila and Pricilla were a married couple who labored in their church, the bible speaks nothing of Pricilla's "leadership" but in respect to being married to Aquila. But the bible does speak of one woman who has leadership within a church in Revelation 2:20.

Revelation 2: 20 Notwithstanding I have a few things against thee, because thou sufferest that woman Jezebel, which calleth herself a prophetess, TO TEACH and to seduce my servants to commit fornication, and to eat things sacrificed unto idols

Anyway, you can take scripture for what it's worth or leave it, Paul wrote that he forbids women to teach, and if you want to find loopholes around the word of God then that's on you, God bless.

You are right on one thing, there is no specific scripture on finding your calling, which is why it is such a gray area in the kingdom. But the word of God does lead to this conclusion. The bible says that Samuel annointed David as king of Israel, years before he even actually became the king, David just went back to doing his Job after being annointed by Samuel. Jeremiah 1:5 says...

Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations.

Here we know that Jeremiah was called to preach, and knew he was called to preach even as a child.

And the before-mentioned callings I posted in my original post. God does call men into positions of high influence, you cannot deny that, read proverbs 29:18

Where there is no vision, the people perish: but he that keepeth the law, happy is he.

No vision, what a perfect description of modern Christianity, with all it's politics and technicalities. We're too worried about offending anyone to even care about the word of God anymore!

You apparently didnt read the verse I posted very carefully, if at all.
If Pricilla "expounded" the word of God to a man, she was indeed teaching him.

Is Jezebel the only Prophetess you find in scripture?

Did you also not read the study on the link I posted earlier in the thread?

I`m not expecting you to take the words of some author for what they are worth of course, but it should give you pause for thought, and cause you to dig a little deeper. In the same way, any serious student of the scripture, should not take the words of the scripture 'for what they are worth' (or for what they appear to say)...but should be willing to study it...

The Bereans would have no doubt made me look mighty dense when it came to being able to quote the scripture, and their understanding of it but still they had a "readiness of mind to search the scripture daily to see if these things be so" (Act 17:11) Why? Because even tho they were familiar with scripture, they had to search for the truth, even tho it (HE) was standing right in front of them.

If you are so anxious to teach and preach, you will not take time first to study, that is also on you, and I speak to myself as well. As it stands, Paul 'appearing' to forbid women to teach, simply doesnt correlate with other scripture.

Act 2:18 And on my servants and on my handmaidens I will pour out in those days of my Spirit; and they shall prophesy:

Now if I am going to speak under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, but i`m not allowed to speak in/to the church, what good is my gift?

I should go out into the streets I suppose...(but since the carnal man doesnt understand the things of the Spirit, I`d probably make even less sence to them than if I were talking to the trees or the barnyard animals)

1Co 12:7 But the manifestation(s) of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal.

Strongs Greek- man: each, every, any, both, (man, woman)

Wow, you can't be serious. So what you are saying is, let's believe wholly in the word of God, but when it comes to subject we personally disagree with, then all of a sudden it becomes a bible study? This is a joke. How much more clear can you get than what Paul said, let me post that scripture for you again since you probably tore it out of your bible.

1 Timothy 2:11-12 A woman should learn in quietness and full submission. I do not permit a woman to teach or to have authority over a man; she must be silent.

How much more clear can you get? Seriously, you need to check yourself on this one Coconut. And the scriptures you posted are irrelivent because they say nothing about a woman teaching or preaching or being in leadership over men. The scriptures you posted speak about the gifts of the spirit, such as prophesying, speaking in tongues, and interpretation of tongues. But whatever, the best advice I can give is to pray about it, I can't change your mind.

Well here I go again with the Holy Spirit leading me to speak.

Go to Matthew Mt 28:18 And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, "All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth.
Mt 28:19 "Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,
Mt 28:20 "teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age." Amen.

We are told to go out and tell the good news of Jesus Christ. It is the great commission...
I go into the jails and minister I am just being obedient to My Lord and King Jesus Christ....
We need to understand who Paul was addressing their was trouble in the church.

What part of the GREAT COMISSION does some of you not understand.... It is for all.

Blessings,

Who is called to preach?

1 Timothy 2:11-12 proclaims, “A woman should learn in quietness and full submission. I do not permit a woman to teach or to have authority over a man; she must be silent.”

Let's make it clear today that God does not call women to become pastors.

To understand that verse in scripture you need to understand who Paul was talking to and why. He was not referring to ALL women.

In first-century Jewish culture, women were not allowed to study. When Paul said that women should learn in quietness and full submission, he was offering them an amazing new opportunity. Paul did not want the Epehsian women to teach because they didn't yet have enough knowledge or experience. The Ephesian church had a particular problem with false teachers. Evidently the women were especially susceptible to false teachings (2 Tim 3:1-9), because they did not yet have enough Biblical knowledge to discern the truth. In addition, some of the women were apparently flaunting their new found Christian freedom by wearing inappropriate clothing (2:9). Paul was telling Timothy not to put anyone (in this case, women) into a position of leadership who was not yet mature in the faith (see 5:22). The same prinicple applies to churches today.

God speaks of men not in gender but in general as in human being (man) in most cases. Do you honestly think that women are excluded from God's word altogether? Because if your statement was true, and God intended for only men to do His work, then other Bible verses (like below) won't make any sense and God would surely have said so more clearly.

If your statement were true then explain the scripture:

Romans 2:11 "For God does not show favouritism."

Paul's commended co-worker, Priscilla, taught Apollos, the great preacher (Acts 18:24-26). In addition, Paul frequently mentioned other women who held positions of responsibility in the church. Phoebe worked in the church (Romans 16:1). Mary, Tryphena and Tryphosa were the Lord's workers (Romans 16:6,12) as were Euodia and Syntyche (Philippians 4:2).

Paul himself acknowledges that women publicly prayed and prophesied (1 Corinthians 11:5).

And last but not least, if your statement were true, then how can you explain that I know that God has called me to preach?

In fact, God calls everyone, man and women to preach the gospel to the ends of the earth.

Matthew 28:19,20 "Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you."

To make disciples of all nations means both men and women of any culture all over the world. We are all disciples, we are all meant to preach the gospel - not just men.

Oh Lord!!! I''m through with this argument!! I don't want to hear about technicalities in the word of God pebosworth, like I told Coconut, you better take the scriptures for what they are worth, not for what YOU want them to say. Read my posts and you will find the answers to your questions.

1) I know God calls everyone to "preach", don't get so technical, what I am referring to is the calling to be a pastor, a leader in the church, a preacher over a congregation of believers. Read my original post and I made this very clear.

2) I know God uses women, I am not going to deny this fact for one second, God can use a woman powerfully in His kingdom, but this goes back to the specific calling to be a leader. Read my posts to Coconut for further clarity.

3) Did you read my posts at all? I already went overall of this with Coconut, God does NOT call women to become pastors, and I even backed this up with evidence from the scriptures.

4) This is not an anti-women thread, women are great, they are awesome, and without women men would be nothing, but they have their place in the church, and it's not over the pulpit.

God bless you, and taking from my other thread that you posted in, why don't you pray about it to get clarity from God? Pray for wisdom in the matter, your exact words. Humble yourself to the slight possibility you might be wrong.

What makes you think I didn't pray?

Your attitude, your tone, your choice of words all lack kindness, patience & self control. Not very Christ-like if you ask me.

You seem very firm in what you believe, but you need to consider the fact that you could be wrong. You must remain teachable at all times. I do. If I am wrong, I pray God will convict me and make me humble enough to admit it. Women can preach, in and out of the church. Afterall, the church is just a building. I think you have misinterpreted scripture.

btw, God has called me to preach, not just to the lost, not just to Christians, but to leaders in the church - men more specifically. This is how I know you are wrong. It has been revealed to me through prophets, dreams & the Holy Spirit on more than one occassion with scriptures to back it up. I know what I've been told. May God correct me if I'm wrong! And I pray that He will do the same for you - correct you where you are wrong.

P.S. I stood up for you in the previous post because other Christians were harsh with you, but you are just the same by being harsh with me.

Yes, amen pebosworth, humble is being teachable. I pray Lord everyday keep me humble. You see today I can admit when I am wrong. Yes, thatguy you are being harsh. (and I pray)

Let me ask you this thatguy what is the church? It is not a box or a steeple house, it the people wherever they are at in a house or on the street. Too many people put to much faith in boxes and that is just what they are. I go out on the streets with homeless and speak God's word and in the jails am I wrong? I am to go into the highway's and byways..... You see Jesus didn't have a puplit He went and preached out on the streets also. I think I will follow Jesus not a man or a woman....

So many people on these forums think because they are pastor they are high and mighty above reproach, that is not humble....

blessings,
debbi

ThatGuy,

If you use a study Bible, which I presume you do, I think you will find confirmation in its study notes that your view on 1 Tim 2:11-12 is in no way universally accepted in the church. Therefore, in my opinion, you should always note when posting your opinion on this issue that what you are posting is, in fact, your opinion only and not universally accepted church teaching.
