In correlation with the OP, I`m going to toss this in...
How many times when in discussions of scripture have I heard the words, but GODS word is TRUE! Yes, but is our understanding true? This is the crux of the whole matter.
I think this statement written by Paul is very key to why tradition is so strongly upheld, and truth has become a murky word.
Heb 5:12 In fact, though by now you should be teachers, you still need someone to teach you the basic truths of God's word. You have become people who need milk instead of solid food.
Heb 5:13 For everyone who lives on milk is still a baby and is inexperienced in the message of righteousness.
Heb 5:14 But solid food is for mature people, whose minds are trained by practice to distinguish good from evil.
How is it possible we can miss out on the 'basic truth,' or remain 'inexperienced' or 'untrained', when we sit under preachers, go to bible studies, read enough christian help books to we could hang out a shingle....but it must be possible, or Paul wouldnt have said he had observed such a problem in the 'church'
I am persuaded the answer lies, first, in what, or should I say 'whom' we know. (well glory!)
See, Paul was just the right person to open his mouth here...he was 'raised on a pew' and he would have sworn he knew the TRUTH...but did he? Ah...NO! When he finally got a revelation of Christ, he realized how blinded by "tradition" he really was! I can relate so well to Paul!
Secondly, theres a lot of regurgitated milk being spewed by baby christians. By that I mean, everyone desires to be a teacher, and/or a counselor. Noble aspiration, but do you see how silly it is, for a baby, unable to even feed themselves, attempting to feed others?
Don`t get me wrong here, every born again child of God has a testimony to share, but in the circles where I come from, I see young converts standing in pulpits, (anybody can preach Christ, i`m talking about teaching here) in the sunday school classroom, teaching bible studies, who could`nt possibly have had time to be 'trained by practice' in the way of righteousness. Its akin to a young cadet getting all hepped up to join the marines, and being allowed to without any training...how foolish...no wonder lifes storms finds many of them 'dead in the water'
And even worse, finds many of those they taught just as dead, bogged down in religious muck and mire...and there is no life there.
That brings me to my final point, study involves more than just opening that BOOK, learning to spew scriptures, taking notes on what the preacher said last Sunday, underlining what some famous preacher said in a book...no, if we want to study to show ourselves approved, if we truly want to rightly divide the word (and aint just out to impress others with our knowledge) ...we will train ourselves to SHUT UP and led God do the teaching. (sorry, most effective way I know how to say it) Does scripture not tell us, that the SPIRIT will teach us, the SPIRIT will guide us, the SPIRIT will lead us into all truth? Please dont think because you had an emotional experience last Sunday, talked in tongues, and got blessed by the annointing of the Holy Ghost, it means you got TRUTH all bottled up. Being led of the Spirit requires really seeking Him, and desiring to know Him.
There is no shame in saying, I`m sorry, I cant 'teach' you anything on this subject, because all I know is what the 'church' has taught me, and they could be wrong, I will have to personally ask God to show me the mind of Spirit on this subject first. Of course thats if we arnt ashamed to believe God, cause that usually takes us out of our comfortable zone. You know majority of christian aint really free, they just traded chains, the bondage of sin, for the bondage of religion.
Blessings
