Inside Joke - May 04, 2007
I was having breakfast with my kids and as we were all talking and laughing, one of my college boys out of the blue said something like, "Yeah, and then the rats would put on their jammies." Something like that, I don't remember exactly because it made absolutely no sense at all. And he was laughing uproariously at whatever rat joke he had just told. The rest of us were just sitting there, smiling and blinking...and processing...waiting for his joke to make sense. But we totally didn't get it.
Kaley finally broke the silence with, "Jordan, you just told an inside joke where YOU were the only one inside, didn't you!" Jordan said, "Yeah, but if my roommate was here, he'd be laughing really hard right now." Then we ALL laughed really hard at the fact that Jordan was having such fun with his roommate--even though his roommate wasn't here!
Know what? It's even more fun with Jesus. He's always on the inside--even if we don't see him. He's always in on it. And that's a good thing. Even those times when we totally don't get it--we don't understand exactly how he's working in a situation, we can rest in knowing that he really is here, and he's working not only on the situation, but on US--on the inside. Philippians 2:12 is the most wonderful reminder that "it is God who works in you to will and to act according to his good purpose." And in Romans we're told that he can do that work through absolutely any situation. "And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose." It's better than an inside joke (though those are so fun). It's an inside WORK. And when the work is finished, we look more like Jesus than we did before.
That's the most important "inside information." It's just a bonus that it comes without rats in jammies.
