I know Jesus first miracle was to turn several barrells of water into wine. Now with that in mind, is it cool for a christian to take a drink. As long as he knows how to control himself and also knows when to quit.

Jesus never banned alcohol, but he did teach putting God first. Alcoholics have put their alcohol before everything, it has control over them and become their 'god'. This is the danger of using any
thing that alters your state of mind including narcotic drugs; used by a doctor they are fine, but when used recreationally they block out Gods influence and take over as false gods.
Jesus, or from my understanding, the Bible does not forbid alcohol, but it does warn against drunkeness!
I do enjoy a couple of pints with my friends, or a glass or two of wine with my family, and see no problem with this, but I am aware of the scriptures that discuss drunkeness, and therefore avoid the temptation to have 'one too many' - when we are drunk, I think our judgement and mind can be slightly altered and we are more open to temptations and doing, or saying something without first thinking it through, which in itself could lead to sin!
Alcohol addiction is a different matter all together, as is any addiction, for addiction is something that comes first in our lives and become idols, and this kind of addiction not only includes things like alcohol, but the lowley cigarette, the bar of chocolate, the spending excessively through need, addiction or deep rooted desire, so it think we need to be careful and guard ourself against such things!

To my understanding, the Bible approves of wine. It doesn't approve of other kinds of alcohol. Wine is actually good for you, it's good for your health. Beer, whiskey, brandy, all the other kinds of alcohol are designed to get you drunk. That is what they advertise. That is what they want. In my opinion, and I may be way off base, but I think we should avoid supporting companies like that. It is because of alcohol that thousands of people are killed each year. Thousands of crimes are committed, and thousands of peoples lives are ruined. If we as Christians support company's like that I think we send a really mixed message to the unsaved world. But that is just one guys opinion.

At my local Methodist church they promote abstinence, which goes as far as to have non-alchoholic wine for Communion which is poured out into seperate cups. At the Evangelical church I attend, I believe they use alchoholic wine.
When out with friends it is good to remember alchohol is not at all essential for having a good time. The Holy Ghost can fill us with all the joy we could ever want. Scottie75 you were bang on when you said that judgement and mind can be altered. Why would we want to do something which would lead to loss of self-control? Peer pressure?
Personally, I have found that if I even just have one glass of wine it affects me. I agree with willr1976, I now tend to stay clear altogether if I can.

The bible sets standards for pastors, well, what churches should look for in a pastor. (I know, just hold on a sec) One quality is that he should not be a drunkard or to to drink too much wine (1 Peter 3, Titus 1). It doesn't say he shouldn't drink at all.
On the other hand, the bible says not to be a stumbling block for others and to be set apart from the world; to be in the world not of it. Other Christians could see me drink and say it is okay because I am a Christian too. They could drink too much or whatever. I could have been the reason for it. A non-Christian could see me drink and compare me to them and say that I am no different from them. Why should they follow my God? or they could think that there is no reason for them to be saved.
I do not drink. I think the stuff is nasty! And I have seen the effects alcohol can have on a family. I hate it and I discourage my friends, saved and not saved alike, not to drink.

I do not agree that the various kinds of alcohol are manufactured for the specific purpose of getting people drunk. If what you claim could be proven in court, the flood of wrongful death lawsuits would have put all the distillers out of business many years ago.

this would be safe but if we just avoided everything that was a problem like this then how would that be living life to the fullest?
well i think that you can still live life to the fullest, there are many other things to life , besides trying to get drunk. like i said earlier, the best thing to do is to avoid it all together, you know that if you have too much to drink it could cause you to sin, so just dont do it.
going to the bars to have only one drink, the atmosphere aint right for a christian and if you are having a couple of pints {scottie75} , sure that is way too much.......

I know my point wouldn't stand up in court, but lets be honest. Beer is designed to get people drunk. If they took the alcohol out of it, do you think people would drink it? No because it wouldn't give them that "buzz" they are looking for. Beer has to have alcohol, otherwise it wouldn't sell.
As Christians we don't support the tobacco companies because they are responsible for the deaths of over 50,000 people a year in canada alone. This is a wicked, wicked organisation and the beer companies are no different. It's all about sex, and alcohol. Don't believe me, watch the average beer commercial. How can we support that? I don't think we can or should.

I think it was Martin Luther who said, men can go wrong with both wine and woman, should we also avoid woman? This takes self control, if we have none as saints, wine won't be our only problem, the word of God is clear not to be given to too much wine.
It also tells men not to be whoremongers, and the list goes on...best to follow it without lying about it or become a touch not, handle not kind of person. But if a man can't touch alcohol because he has little self control, then he should'nt touch what he can't handle and this includes the opposite sex as well...

Thats your assumption, Jesus was in a whole crowd of men and woman when he turned water into wine, and many of them or all who could drink, drank with him... some even told him thats pretty good wine you got there. But of course we also have the ones who called him a winebibber and a sinner, because he wasn't playing their tune.

I see a man trying to be cauteous, and not lead himself into temptation, but we don't have to lie about alcohol, or order men to abstain from it. Use the scriptures...the pleasures and cares of this life choke the word, wine or no wine.
I see you may be weak when it comes to the wine issue, therefore don't drink, but don't weaken others with a weak conscience, or judge them. This must be done in faith, otherwise it can become damnable. But so is lieing about it...

I thought the true point is not to see or surmise how much we can get away with and still be okay in God's eyes, but to use good judgement in all things.
We have liberty in all things, but can choose to not accept all things in our lives in order to not stumble ourselves or others. Just go for the good realizing that we're not perfect, but don't rationalize our lusts for worldly/fleshly things as being okay if it's only to a certain degree. That just doesn't work.

If you want my sincere view..........drunken-ness is a process which begins with the first drink. So the first drink would make one a drunkard, in my view
If folks are hung up on smokes, pills and all the rest, dont come to me for an excuse........
As I said, I would not be critical......judgement rests with the Lord. The bible say's that we....thats us.........have to work "out our salvation with fear"
