what do you think,
Is Harry Potter ok to read but not actually believe that such things can happen or is it just totally wrong. I asked my Bible study helper this same question and she said it depends. What do you think?

I've read the books listened to the books and have the movies from my stand point I don't see it as a issue but I'm a adult for parents maybe it's a more touchy subject cause it's possible it might stray a child from God to something else. I always felt the storyline is like the bible good(God) & evil (satan). I know there are fans who studied these books obsessively and if you are a christian and you are doing that instead of the bible then yea it's a issue. I have re-read the books and watched the movies more then once cause I do enjoy it and I will buy the next book and watch any upcoming movies.

Sorry I probably didn't explain it right. What I mean is that Lord Vortomort is like Satan wanting to destroy so much and hurt people and full of hate, an evilness and Dumbledore is like God in that he's good, loving, sees the best in people and non-judgemental.
I don't mean anymore then that so don't take me the wrong way (I know for some christians it's a 'touchy' subject) . I just mean there are some similiarities that's all and no more.

At the time, i didn't really see the connection as to what you meant, but now i sort of see it.

I think Harry Potter is wrong, because it has to do with sorcery. God hates sorcery.

Yes I understand what you are saying and you are correct. But I really believe you have to take it as a fictional story just like the da vinci code (and I have to say I found it odd that christians got so upset about it cause it's fictional so why be that concerned but having said that I have not read it and have no interest in it)
On the got questions website which I go on alot for the in depth questions and answers and they say this . (I can't recall if there is any problem with posting this here I did check on the dos & don'ts but can't remember now. )

Question: "What should be the Christian view of Harry Potter?"

Answer: As the popularity of the Harry Potter series continues to grow, Christian parents are left with some difficult questions. Some believe that the magical world of Harry Potter is little more than harmless fun and fantasy. Others fear that these books and movies are an invitation to the occult. Regardless of a parent's viewpoint, Harry Potter has become unavoidable, as he now boldly lines the shelves of children's bookstores, public libraries, and schools. Without question, Christians should have some concerns and need to use careful discernment in deciding whether or not to allow their children to indulge themselves in the world of Harry Potter.

Harry Potter books and films are full of stereotypical magic. Witchcraft and wizardry are central themes, and the lead roles are played by wizards, witches, and other magical creatures. Although the characters practice casting spells, reading crystal balls, etc., they do not communicate with spiritual (supernatural) forces. While this may be considered a positive, one definite negative is that there is no higher power to answer to at all.

Unlike other fantasy children's stories that contain witches and the like, such as C.S. Lewis' The Chronicles of Narnia, Harry Potter does not have a positive biblical worldview. The distinction between good and bad can become blurred as both the "good" and "evil" characters participate in different types witchcraft and magic. The Bible clearly condemns all kinds of witchcraft, sorcery and spiritism (Deuteronomy 18:10-11). Philippians 4:8 tells us to "fill your minds with those things that are good and that deserve praise: things that are true, noble, right, pure, lovely, and honorable." So does this mean that all Christians should avoid Harry Potter altogether?

For some families, the answer to this is yes. The Harry Potter series is not for young or spiritually immature children, as they may not have the ability to distinguish between reality and fantasy, right and wrong, or good and evil. At best, they may be left confused about God's views about the occult, and at worst, they may become enchanted by the magical existence of Harry and his friends, becoming desensitized to occultic lifestyles. In addition, there are issues such as violence and mildly foul language that each Christian family will be sensitive to at different levels.

On the other hand, there are positive aspects to Harry Potter. Love is shown through selflessness and self-sacrifice; Harry's own mother died to save him. There is a sense of justice, as good always triumphs over evil. Harry faces his fears and finds courage, even risking his own life for greater good. Friendships are defined by loyalty and unending devotion, even to the point of death.

To any family who is facing the debate with their children about whether or not they should be allowed to watch or read Harry Potter, my suggestion is this: "Don't worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done" (Philippians 4:6, NLT). The Bible tells us that God cares about what happens to us, and so we should give all of our worries to Him (1 Peter 5:7).

Christian parents have the responsibility to not only teach their children about the virtues that please God, but also about the spiritual forces that we are up against (Ephesians 6:12). When a child gets to a point where he or she has a personal relationship with God, and is able to fully discern between what is good and bad according to God's standards, reading Harry Potter books or watching the movies can serve as not only entertainment, but can empower parents to raise up wise Christian thinkers.

I think this was a good answer. I think for parents it is more of a concern then if a adult who reads it and then that's it so to speak. If it were to get you interested in wizardary excessively or something like that then it's a problem. Anyway just what I think??

Harry Potter is not good news. It is based upon magic........what sort of magic you ask......I do not fully know. What I do know is that the message of Harry Potter is worldly and soulish.

I was so pleased when "THe Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe" was produced. The Lion was slain but He rose again. A much better story than the fantasy of H.P.

Good question....thankyou for asking........That is my off the cuff viewpoint

I work with children at my church, and i've come to realize that they are so easily deceived... Now we, as youth and adults can philosophy on this a lot, but a lot of them don't know how to select truth from lies... Parents who allow their children to read and watch H. P. should always be on the look out... We don’t allow our kids to see things like (sex, killing, swearing etc) on TV – or at least we shouldn’t, because they’re kids and these things can have a bad influence on them as Christians. Now the Bible treats magic and occult as the sins that I’ve mentioned above.
I think we should pay extra attention when it comes to our children and this kind of programs. Satan is smarter than us, and he’s always finding new and subtle ways to deceive us. And he knows that our children are more vulnerable… Think about it…

Dreamer and Steven I agree with you that Harry Potter is wrong and
I apreceate that that you warn people against the evil of Harry Potter. As a Christian I am a anti Harry Potter and I think people must stay away from witchcraft.

I am 15 and I have seen all the movies (up to the 6th) and read some of the books. The way I see it, I believe it is ok to watch but only if you have the ability to see that it is fake.

I dont want to bu rude but as a Christian I believe that the Bible clearly tells us to have nothing to do with witchcraft. Go and read Detronomium 18 vers 10 and you will see exactly what I mean. The Bible clearly tells us to have nothing to do with witchcraft. Even if it is just stories witchcraft is still wrong in God's eyes.

I think my feelings, see blog or else where on forum, in fact used to have a whole web page on it, so there well known, well by some, lol.

However now I might shock by saying, yes, err, what, go figure, or was it no, lol, what was the question again.

Anyway, why is it okay to read then and go watch, when I have so often said stay away from it.

There can only ever be one reason for a wide awake born again, knows the sign of the times Christian to do this:

Information.

We first seek God in prayer and ask for His protection and then we proceed.
Personally I'm not intereted.

But for some to speak out against it, one has to, well, have some knowledge of it, and not second hand knowledge.

I forgot to mention in the ********** posting, that the best way to get your message across is if you have been there yourself.

This is why I dropped the scriptures and lectures and on my is homosexuality and being gay wrong, link to a source where the host was themselves, if I recall gay.

If you feel the need to speak out against it and witness to it, then info has to be gathered about it.

Other than that, no, why?

Because it opens gateways, same with lust, what starts out and again trust me on this from experience, as something light, just legs, skirts, often ends up in full blown pornography and the like.

Also if demons see any opportunity, they don't care if your some school kid saying I curse you in the name of baltazar, 'Oh really, cool, I claim that.' Says the demon.

Before you know it, like in the store where I work, Halloween, I book off two weeks in October and pray I don't have to put the stuff out.

Yesterday I noticed a stabd with Harry Potter stuff on, oh no, no, oh dear.
If we dabble and dabble some more, before you know it, hey Evolution is fact, right, not, theory means just that, theory.

Yet the BBC you would think, every time they mention the word evolution and millions of years were talking from proven documented fact.
My whole website in about that, creation right, evolution wrong.

Because like Ken Ham of Answers in Genesis and John Mackay of Creation Research say, if we don't have the foundation in place, because the enemy has taken it away, how can we witness.

Think, Jesus, who needs Jesus, to save us from, what sins, I' don't believe in creation, and Adam and Eve.
So until we restore that, we can never witness well enough.

No, best stayed away from, unless you have a good reason, that being to witness to friends, who are not saved, or even Christians that feel it is acceptable and no harm done.
