The word “Expound” means, “ to solve, in the sense of to explain, to interpret.”

Jesus constantly EXPOUNDED to his Apostles the mysteries of what he spoke about concerning the Kingdom of God, and its concepts of how the laws of that Kingdom worked.
The Apostles, especially Paul, “EXPOUNDED” to his readers by explaining his understanding of God, and the Kingdom that had been revealed unto him by Jesus Christ, manifesting himself to him, in addition to the work of the Holy Spirit.

Mar 4:34 But without a parable spake he not unto them: and when they were alone, he (Jesus) EXPOUNDED ALL THINGS TO HIS DISCIPLES.

No one can expound upon the truth that has not yet been revealed to them. Knowing Bible scripture is NOT knowing what the Bible says, nor is it memorizing scripture! Jesus tells us how truth is revealed.

The words in the Bible that form God's commandments are NOT Jesus, who is the Word of God!! Knowing truth is knowing Jesus who claimed to be “the way, the TRUTH, and the life” (John 14:6)
Knowing what the words of God say in the Bible is only a “PREREQUISITE” to knowing the truth.

All scripture points to and testifies of Jesus, who is the truth!

Scripture points us to the one who reveals the truth!

Expounding without knowing the truth first winds up only as logical analytical reasoning that does nothing to its hearers or the one expounding!!

The Apostle Paul expounded to the Church concerning marriage, divorce, and remarriage, without Jesus telling him what to say! How can that be? Because Paul knew Jesus personally, and he knew how the Lord thought about such things. No one can do that unless Jesus has manifested himself to them first!

1Co 7:25 Now concerning virgins I HAVE NO COMMANDMENT OF THE LORD: YET I GIVE MY JUDGMENT, as one that hath obtained mercy of the Lord to be faithful.
1Co 7:6 But I SPEAK THIS BY PERMISSION, AND NOT OF COMMANDMENT.
1Co 7:12 But to the rest SPEAK I, NOT THE LORD: If any brother hath a wife that believeth not, and she be pleased to dwell with him, let him not put her away.

Paul was writing back to the churches that had asked him about marriage, divorce, and remarriage. Here he EXPOUNDS unto them his understanding of the subject without asking the Lord what to say to them.

Later on, at the end of this chapter, Paul tells the Church's......

1Co 7:39 The wife is bound by the law as long as her husband liveth; but if her husband be dead, she is at liberty to be married to whom she will; only in the Lord.
1Co 7:40 But she is happier if she so abide, after my judgment: and I THINK ALSO THAT I HAVE THE SPIRIT OF GOD.

Paul believed that the things he EXPOUNDED upon were exactly what Jesus would have said, if he had told him.
This is expounding, but it can never be done until after we know the truth by Jesus manifesting himself to us, which comes by keeping His word in us, proving we truly love him!

What you said sounds deep, but some of it is not what the Bible teaches.

Yes, Jesus explained things to His disciples. Yes, Paul and others taught what they learned from God. But saying no one can teach the truth unless Jesus shows up to them personally is wrong. That is not in the Bible.

God already gave us the truth in the Bible. It is finished. You don’t need a special vision to understand it. You need to read it, believe it, and obey it. The Bible says, “Thy word is truth” (John 17:17). That means the truth is in the Bible, not in your feelings or in dreams.

It is good to pray and ask the Holy Spirit to help you understand. He opens our eyes to what is already written. But He will never give new truth or go against Scripture.

Paul didn’t make stuff up. Even when he gave his opinion, he was filled with the Holy Spirit. He said, “What I write is the commandment of the Lord” (1 Corinthians 14:37). He didn’t need Jesus to appear to him again every time he wrote. He already had the truth.

The Bible is enough. If you say only people with special revelations can teach truth, then you are saying the Bible is not enough. That is false. The Holy Spirit helps us understand the Bible, but He doesn’t give us extra truth on the side.

If you want to know truth, open your Bible, ask God to help you, and believe what it says. That’s it. No visions needed. Just trust what God already said.

The Word of God is clear in its main message, especially the gospel, but that doesn’t mean every part is immediately easy to understand without teaching, study, and guidance. The Bible itself says we need help understanding it.


Nehemiah 8:8 says, “So they read in the book in the law of God distinctly, and gave the sense, and caused them to understand the reading.” That’s expounding. Not changing the meaning, just helping people understand what is already written.

Even the apostle Peter said some of Paul’s writings were “hard to be understood” (2 Peter 3:16). That doesn’t mean they’re impossible, just that they require careful handling. Jesus expounded the Scriptures to His disciples (Luke 24:27), not because the Scriptures were faulty, but because their understanding was limited. That’s why it says in Luke 24:45, “Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures.”

God gave teachers to the church for a reason (Ephesians 4:11–12). Not to replace Scripture, but to help explain it accurately and apply it rightly. The Holy Spirit is our ultimate guide (John 16:13), but He often works through faithful teaching, not just private reading.

So no, Jesus and Paul didn’t waste their time. Expounding Scripture is biblical and necessary. The problem today isn’t that we have too many people explaining the Bible; it’s that we have too many doing it without sticking to what it actually says.

People who are puffed up, thinking they have discovered some hidden mystery that others don’t know.

The mixing recipe needed to rightly divide the parables is given in 2 Corinthians 4:4:18.

You read the phrase "the word of God" and think "Bible" up inside your head. Yes? But that's not what is actually written in the Greek texts. (May I expound a bit on Greek?)

There are two Greek words LOGOS and RHEMA that are translated into English as WORD. Well??? When you read your English translation, then which Word is being used? LOGOS-Word or RHEMA-Word. You don't know because you can't tell. And when someone says to me something about the Word of God, I have to ask "Which one, which Word?"

Is it important? LOGOS and RHEMA don't mean the same thing. LOGOS is the Teachings of Jesus. RHEMA is the direct word from the Holy Ghost. And neither of these Words (the LOGOS-WORD and the RHEMA-WORD) mean "Bible." So when translating LOGOS and RHEMA into "Word" these people fuse two concepts together that ought not be. There is a con-fusion.

So... one purpose of expounding is to clear up someone's misunderstanding, not to provide some new and novel teaching.

LOGOS means "the Teachings of"... and indeed the disciples of Jesus must continue in the Teachings (LOGOS) of Jesus (and only Jesus).

And if you have the Teachings of Jesus (for example the Sermon on the Mount, the Sermon on the Plain, the various parables, etc.) those are the commands of Jesus - and if one keepth them, from a loving heart, not out of duty or fear, that one will receive the manifestation which is the RHEMA of God.

Knowing what the words of God say in the Bible is only a “PREREQUISITE” to knowing the truth.

Surely we agree here, saved that I learned the hard way that translations lie. And tradition spins a narrative of one translation lie upon another.

So how to start? Always say Bible when one means Bible. And never say "Word of God" but always say "Logos of God" or "Rhema of God" after learning the difference.
