Any time you mix Law and Gospel, you end up with a perverted, depressing message suited only to hypocrites. It is a serious error of confusing justification with sanctification. Justification is 100%, all of grace and is an instant declaration of God Almighty:
"who was delivered up because of our offences, and was raised up because of our being declared righteous." (Rom 4:25 YLT)
"Who shall lay a charge against the choice ones of God? God is He that is declaring righteous," (Rom 8:33 YLT)
"much more, then, having been declared righteous now in his blood, we shall be saved through him from the wrath;" (Rom 5:9 YLT)
Sanctification in progression is all of God also, 100% of grace -
"For by one offering he hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified." (Heb 10:14 ERV)
"Wherefore Jesus also, that he might sanctify the people through his own blood, suffered without the gate." (Heb 13:12 ERV)
"By which will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all." (Heb 10:10 ERV)
"(for the law made nothing perfect), and a bringing in thereupon of a better hope, through which we draw nigh unto God." (Heb 7:19 ERV)

James, in chapter two writes rhetorically, not to be seen literally as one saint judging the truth of another's faith. These words are for us believers to view ourselves. The example of Abraham is given: Abraham was declared righteous by faith in Gen. 15; his episode with the sacrifice and Isaac did not come until later, Gen. 22. This was between Abraham and God, he was not proving his faith to those around him; this was solely a matter between himself and "the angel of the LORD".
