Gift of Tongues: Do not feel insecure or stressed if you do not have it.

I have come across Christians, including Pastors, who make a big deal about the gift of tongues to the point that they make other Christians who do not have this gift feel insecure about their spirituality. I have also come across Christians who are stressed that they do not know how to speak in tongues.
Some elevate this gift above all gifts as if it is the only gift of the Holy Spirit.

1. The Holy Spirit has many gifts

The gift of tongues is one of the gifts of the Holy Spirit; it is not the only one.

Here are the other gifts of the Holy Spirit:

• Gift of wisdom
• Gift of knowledge
• Gift of faith
• Gift of healing
• Gift of miracles
• Gift of prophecy
• Gift of discernment
• Gift of interpretation of tongues

1 Corinthians 12:4-10 says:
“4 Now, there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit.
5 And there are differences of administrations, but the same Lord.
6 And there are diversities of operations, but it is the same God which worketh all in all.
7 But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal.
8 For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit;
9 To another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit;
10 To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues:”

2. You cannot decide which gift you receive; the Holy Spirit decides this.

1 Corinthians 12:11 says
“But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will.”

Therefore you should accept the gift that you have. If you have the gift of tongues, then do not look down on others who do not. They did not choose not to have this gift. There is no gift that is superior to any other gift.

3. Gifts from God are not an indication of being close to God.

Whether it is a gift mentioned in Corinthians 12 or not, a gift from God is not an indication that you are close to God or that you have a good relationship with Him. It is also not an indication that you are going to heaven and no longer a sinner.

3.1. Example: Some people have the gift of prophecy and can do miracles but will not enter heaven.

Matthew 7:22-23 says
“22 Many will say to me in that day, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?
23 And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.”

3.2. Example: Salvation by grace is a gift and does not mean that you do not have a good relationship with God. (Ephesians 2:8-9)

3.3. Example: Samson committed many sins, but God gave him the gift of strength. Balaam, the corrupt prophet from the Old Testament had the gift of prophecy.

4. Examples of those who were baptized and did not speak in tongues

• There is no indication that Jesus ever spoke in tongues, although He was filled with the Holy Spirit.
• There is no indication that the Ethiopian Eunuch spoke in tongues after being baptized (Acts 8:37-39)
• There is no indication that Crispus spoke in tongues after being baptized (Acts 18:8)

Therefore it is not necessary to have the gift of tongues. If you do not have it, it might be an indication that the Holy Spirit has given you another gift.

5. What is happening in churches (mainly in the Pentecostal churches) is not biblical.

In the Pentecostal churches that I have attended, you find almost the whole church or a significant number of people speaking in tongues all at once.
I have also noticed that there is no interpreter to interpret what is being said.

However, the bible says the following:

• Two or three people should speak in tongues one at a time, not more than half the church all at once.
• There should be an interpreter.
• If there is no interpreter, then those who have the gift of tongues should keep quiet.

1 Corinthians 14:5 says
“5 I would that ye all spake with tongues but rather that ye prophesied: for greater is he that prophesieth than he that speaketh with tongues, except he interpret, that the church may receive edifying.”

1 Corinthians 14:13
“13 Wherefore let him that speaketh in an unknown tongue pray that he may interpret.”

1 Corinthians 14:27-28
“27 If any man speak in an unknown tongue, let it be by two, or at the most by three, and that by course; and let one interpret.
28 But if there be no interpreter, let him keep silence in the church; and let him speak to himself, and to God.”

6. Without love, any gift does not have value.

1 Corinthians 13:1-2 says
“If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. “

7. The fruit of the Spirit are the most important and what we should be stressing about.

The fruit of the Spirit, which includes love, is the most important thing that we should be concerned about. The fruit of the Spirit is an indication that you have the Holy Spirit. You should be more stressed whether you have the fruit of the Holy Spirit, than be concerned whether you have any of the gifts of the Holy Spirit.
Remember, as mentioned in Matthew 7:22-23. Some will not enter heaven even if they have some of the gifts of the Spirit.

Galatians 5:22-25 says
“22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,
23 Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.
24 And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts.
25 If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.”

Very well said, Speaking in a tongue is just speaking in a certain language, and is meant to edify those who can interpret that language. That is what is shown at Pentecost.

Tongues is not gibberish any fool can fake, it is a language meant to edify those of the same language.

I can speak the word of God in a mystery by the wisdom of God, in English; to those who speak English, and still not edify. Because they do not have the ears to hear what the Spirit is saying in the mystery.

Jesus said in
John 8:43
Why do ye not understand my speech? even because ye cannot hear my word.

So you see to speak with new tongues does not necessarily mean to speak a new language. It is to speak Gods words in a mystery, to those who have been given ears to hear the mystery. Peace

The one who speaks in a tongue should be the first choice to interpret it.

1Cor 13:1; If I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but do not have love, I have become a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal.

Some tongues are the language of angels

1Cor 14:13; Therefore let one who speaks in a tongue pray that he may interpret.
1Cor 14:14; For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my mind is unfruitful.

You can even pray in a tongue, a language you don't understand, but God does.

Rom 8:26; In the same way the Spirit also helps our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we should, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words;

Mark 16:16; "He who has believed and has been baptized shall be saved; but he who has disbelieved shall be condemned.
Mark 16:17; "These signs will accompany those who have believed: in My name they will cast out demons, they will speak with new tongues;
Mark 16:18; they will pick up serpents, and if they drink any deadly poison, it will not hurt them; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover."

Those who do not speak (pray) in tongues never let up on their constant denigrations of people who have been baptized in the Holy Spirit and receive the Bible evidence of speaking in tongues
exactly as both Jesus and scripture declare.

Most people here on Talk Jesus do not spend their time and efforts at slandering other denominations, yet those who do not pray in the Holy Spirit zealously attack and besmirch Pentecostal
faith and doctrine over and over. How many more threads on this topic must we endure on Talk Jesus?

18 that they said to you, In the last time mockers shall be, walking after their own ungodly lusts.

Baptism
