From verse 1, Paul is telling believers that seek spiritual gifts to seek the gift of prophesy over all spiritual gifts ad began to compare tongues against prophesy t show why; if you bother to read the message thru out that whole chapter , tongues is not a stand alone gift.
1 Corinthians 14:1 Follow after charity, and desire spiritual gifts, but rather that ye may prophesy. 2 For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries.
There are no mystreries to God so why say he is speaking to God? This is why we need to compare the two references for how Paul was speaking to mean in those days.
27 If any man speak in an unknown tongue, let it be by two, or at the most by three, and that by course; and let one interpret. 28 But if there be no interpreter, let him keep silence in the church; and let him speak to himself, and to God.
Verse 2 in comparison with verse 28 is about God understanding what the man is saying even though the man does not; this is not meaning he is speaking to God because of verse 28 where if there was no interpretation, he is instructed to be silent because he speaks to himself and to God, meaning he understands what he is saying as God does too not that he is "mad" talking to himself and to God.
No. It does not. Lie I had questioned earlier for verse 2, are there mysteries to God? No. Then was he really speaking to God the way we understand that to mean in English today? Obviously not the same way in the Greek. When reading on as Paul was comparing tongues against prophesy for why prophesy is better, Paul prayed that when he spoke in tongues, he prays that someone else will interpret it because until it is interpreted, he does not understand it nor can that tongue be beneficial, therefore he is not being self edified until it is interpreted.
If Paul was actually claiming self edification, then he would not instruct any one to pray that someone else would interpret that tongue for them to understand it, but he did because when he was comparing tongues against prophesy thru out that chapter is why prophesy is better than tongues, because tongues is not a stand alone gift thus it can never be for private use.
