When he went into the Tabernacle of the Covenant the next day, he found that Aaron's staff, representing the tribe of Levi, had sprouted, budded, blossomed, and produced ripe almonds! Numbers 17:8 NLT

The civil parish of Aspatria in Cumberland, England, is named for the ash walking stick carried by St. Patrick. Legend tells how St. Patrick, as he traveled back to Ireland from his parents’ home, stuck his staff in the ground while he preached. Apparently, it took so long for the people of Aspatria to understand his message that the staff took root and grew into a tree.

The miracle of a staff coming back to life is not unique to St. Patrick. It was also the sign to the Israelites of Aaron’s priestly authority before God.

After the rebellion of Korah, God spoke to Moses and had each tribe submit a staff with the tribe’s name on it. Aaron added his staff to the others, and they were all placed before the ark of the covenant in the tabernacle for the night. The next day, Aaron’s staff had sprouted, flowered, and borne ripe almonds. For the tribes of Israel, the sign was clear: God worked through priests, not directly with individuals—not yet.

Today, the priesthood’s ability to come before God is open to everyone because of Jesus’ enduring sacrifice. Like St. Patrick’s walking stick and Aaron’s staff, God breathes His life into previously dead things.

Prayer: Father, I praise You for breathing life into me!
