what was the law for ?

Rom 2:18; You know what he wants; you know what is right because you have been taught his law.

Rom 7:7; What shall we say then? Is the Law sin? May it never be! On the contrary, I would not have come to know sin except through the Law; for I would not have known about coveting if the Law had not said, "YOU SHALL NOT COVET."

(not Romans, but... )
Gal 3:24; Therefore the Law has become our tutor to lead us to Christ, so that we may be justified by faith.

The schoolmaster to bring us to Christ.
King James Bible
Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith.

New King James Version
Therefore the law was our tutor to bring us to Christ, that we might be justified by faith.

with out the law of God, you are not coming to Christ for it is in the recipe.

ROMANS 3:21
But now apart from the law the righteousness of God
has been made known, to which the Law and the Prophets testify.

Hello again 'TheWordIsOne,

I notice that your question is in the past tense, 'What was the law for?
Does this mean that you believe that the law is now obsolete? That it has no present application?

Thank you

And we have to be very careful when we think "LAW". There is The Whole Law of GOD and "The Moral LAW"of GOD referring to the 10 Commandments and then we Have "The Commandments of Christ" Remember we are reading translations and paraphrases. Most of the time the letters is written to the Jewish people with a gentile audience. The Jewish people do not have to thing about which Law is he referring too. Gentiles was never given the Law of GOD, But They were beginning to receive "The Commandments of Christ" spoken by Christ from his lips and they already had the moral law of GOD in their hearts There was no such Gospels written until about 17-50 plus years after Jesus Death and resurrection. And Romans was written to The Roman Jews in Rome.about 23 years after Jesus died, one letter to a Hidden follows of the People of "The WAY" there was no churches in Rome then, They where hiding. secrecy.

We have to be careful when we read and there are so many unscrupulous religious leaders among us. That is why we need a good and excellent Bible translation and now with the new Bibles I feel bad for a lot of people. Especially many christians do not understand and the Permissions of the workings of the god of this world. Good for some and bad for others. "but where sin abound grace abound that much more" Meaning it gets worst and worst and worst. and grace continue to cover a multitude of sin. Just because we receive more grace that means we are more worst. By giving us more grace does not mean we are more better. but more worst. Put more paint on, to cover the blemishes.

For when the Gentiles, which have not the law, do by nature the things contained in the law,

Hello @PloughBoy,

In Romans 2:13-14 (above), when speaking concerning those who had not heard the gospel of the grace of God: Paul said that the people of the nations (Gentiles), had the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience bearing witness, accusing or excusing one another. So that in the day that the Lord, as the One appointed by God to judge the secrets of men's hearts, does so: He will judge the gentiles according to the law of conscience; and the Jew, who are under law, according to the law of God.. Yes? So the law of conscience is the possession of every man, yes? Is this what you meant when you said that (quote), 'they already had the moral law of GOD in their hearts'?

Thank you

A woman after my own heart.

The lord made us without a doubt so unique, the ability to exercise free will and interpretation
There will always be different points of view concerning the law
I myself don’t think God would send a walking talking living example of the law in the flesh just to say “ oh btw we don’t have to follow it in a few years when I go to the cross”
I think it is eternal, I think he says he will “ write the law in our hearts” , not for no reason at all but because he wants us to keep the law
Now some people like watching football and I like watching debates
The law is a confusing subject to a lot of people and we are all unique
Did Paul keep torah?
All scripture points to yes he did that he taught the law that he followed the law
And this is a great debate on the subject
We are all brothers/ sisters in Christ and God made us unique so it’s not a poke at anyone’s belief on the subject at all, unfortunately in today’s world we can’t keep all the laws but it’s what’s in our hearts that count and the lord blesses those that try to walk in righteousness

Those who are still under the law, those who had not received the gospel of grace

The Law

Isaiah 33: 17- 24 Thine eyes shall see the king in his beauty; they shall behold the land that is very far off.
Thine heart shall meditate terror.
Where is the scribe? Where is the receiver?
Where is he that counted the towers?
Thou shalt not see a fierce people, a people of a deeper speech than thou canst perceive; of a stammering tongue, that thou canst not understand.

Isaiah 28: 9 -11 Whom shall he teach knowledge?
And whom shall he make understand doctrine? Them that are weaned from the milk, and drawn from the breasts.
For precept must be upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line; line upon line; here a little and there a little; for with stammering lips and another tongue will he speak to this people. Look upon Zion, the city of our solemnities; thine eyes shall see Jerusalem a quiet habitation, a tabernacle that shall not be taken down; not one of the stakes thereof shall ever be removed, neither shall any of the cords thereof be broken.
But there the glorious Lord will be unto us a place of broad rivers and streams; wherein shall go no galley with oars, neither shall gallant ship pass thereby.
For the Lord is our judge, the Lord is our lawgiver, the Lord is our king; he will save us.
Thy tackings are loosed; they could not well strengthen their mast, they could not spread the sail; then is the prey of a great spoil divided; the lame take the prey.
And the inhabitant shall not say, I am sick; the people that dwell therein shall be forgiven their iniquity.

Isaiah 51:1-16 Hearken to me, ye that follow after righteousness, ye that seek the Lord; look unto the rock whence ye are hewn, and to the hole of the pit, whence ye are digged.
Look unto Abraham your father, and unto Sarah that bare you; for I called him alone, and blessed him, and increased him.

For the Lord shall comfort Zion; He will comfort all her waste place, and he will make her wilderness like Eden, and her desert like the garden of the Lord; joy and gladness shall be found therein thanksgiving, and the voice of melody.

Hearken unto me, my people; and give an ear unto me, O my nation; for a law shall proceed from me, and I will make my judgment to rest for a light of the people.

My righteousness is near; my salvation is gone forth, and mine arms shall judge the people; the isles shall wait upon me, and on mine arm shall they trust. Lift up your eyes to the heavens, and look upon the earth beneath; for the heavens shall vanish away like smoke, and the earth shall wax old like a garment, and they that dwell therein shall die in like manner, but my salvation shall be forever, and my righteousness shall not be abolished.
Hearken unto me, ye that know righteousness, the people in whose heart is my law; fear ye not the reproach of men, neither be ye afraid of their revilings.
For the moth shall eat them up like a garment, and the worm shall eat them like wool, but my righteousness shall be for ever, and my
salvation from generation to generation.

Awake, awake, put on strength, O arm of Lord; awake as in the ancient days, in the generations of old. Art thou, not it that hath cut Rahab, and wounded the dragon?
Art thou, not it which hath dried the sea, the waters of the great deep; that hath made the depths of the sea a way for the ransomed to pass over?
Therefore the redeemed of the Lord shall return, and come with singing into Zion; and everlasting joy shall be upon their head; they shall obtain gladness and joy, and sorrow and mourning shall flee away. I, even I, am he that comforted you; who art thou, that thou shoudest be afraid of a man that shall die, and of the son of man which shall be made as grass; and forgettest the Lord thy maker, that hath stretched forth the heavens, and laid the foundations of the earth; and hast feared continually every day because of the fury of the oppressor, as he were ready to destroy?
And where is the fury of the oppressor?
The captive exile hastened that he may be loosed, and that he should not die in the pit, nor that his bread should fall. but I am the Lord thy God, that divided the sea, whose waves roared; the Lord of hosts is his name.
And I have put my words in thy mouth, and I have covered thee in the shadow of mine hand, that I may plant the heavens, and lay the foundations of the earth, and say unto Zion, thou art my people.

James 4:7-10 Submit yourselves therefore to God the Father. Resist the devil, and it will flee from you.

Ephesians 6:11-12 Put on the whole armour of God,
(which is the word of God the Father,) that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.
For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against power, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. Draw nigh to God your Father, and he will draw nigh to you.
Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double-minded.

James 2: 5-14, 17-26. Hearken my beloved brethren, hath not God, the Father has chosen the poor of this world rich in faith, and heirs of the kingdom which he hath promised to them that love Him?
But ye have despised the poor. Do not rich men oppress you, and draw you before judgment seats?
Do not they blaspheme that worthy name by the which ye are called? If ye fulfill the royal law according to the scripture, thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself, ye do well; but if ye have respect to a person, ye commit sin, and are convinced of the law as transgressors.
For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all.

Romans 3: 9 -26 What then? Are we better than them?
No, in no wise; for we have before proved both Jews and Gentiles, that they are all under sin; as it is written, there is none righteous, no not one; there is none that understands, there is none that seeketh after the true God.
They are all gone out of the way, they are together become unprofitable; there is none that doeth good, no not one.
Their throat is an open tomb; with tongues, they have practiced deceit. The poison of asps is under their lips, whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness.
Their feet are swift to shed blood; destruction and misery are in their ways; and the way of peace they not known, there is no fear of God before their eyes.
And God looked upon the earth, and beheld, it was corrupt; for all flesh had corrupted his way upon the earth.

My spirit shall not always strive with man, and God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.
And the fear of you and the dread of you shall be upon every beast of the earth, and upon every fowl of the air, upon all that moveth upon the earth, and upon all the fishes of the sea; into your hand are they delivered.
And surely the blood of your lives will I require; at the hand of every beast will I require it, and at the hand of man; at the hand of every man’s brother will I require the life of man.
Whoso sheddeth man’s blood, by man, shall his blood be shed; for in the image of God made man.

Now we know that what things soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the law; that every mouth may become stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God.
Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight; for by the law is the knowledge of sin.
But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets; even the righteousness of God which is by the faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe; for there is no difference; for all have sinned, and short of the glory of God the Father.
Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus; whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God; to declare.
I say at this time his righteousness; that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus. Do we then make void the law through faith?

God forbid; yea, we establish the law.
For he that said, do not commit adultery, said also, Do not kill.
Now if thou commit no adultery, yet if thou kill, thou art become a transgressor of the law.
So speak ye, and so do, as they that shall be judged by the law of liberty.
For he shall have judgment without mercy, that hath showed no mercy; and mercy rejoiceth against judgment.
What doth it profit, my brethren, though a man say he hath faith, and have not worked?
Can faith save him?
Even so, faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone.
Yea, a man may say, thou hast faith, and I have works; show me thy faith by my works.
Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well; the devils also believe, and tremble.
But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead? Was not Abraham our father justified by works.
When he had offered Isaac his son upon the altar?
Seest thou how faith wrought with his works was faith made perfect?
And the scripture was fulfilled which saith, Abraham believed God, and it was imputed unto him for righteousness, and he was called the friend of God. Ye see then how that by works a man is justified, and not by faith only.
Likewise also was not Rahab the harlot justified by works, when she had received the messengers and had sent them out another way? For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.

Romans 9: 30 - 33 What shall we say then? That the Gentiles, which followed not after righteousness, have attained to righteousness, even the righteousness which is of faith.
But Israel, which followed after the law of righteousness, hath not attained to the law of righteousness. Wherefore?
Because they sought it not by faith, but as it were by the works of the law.
For they stumbled at that stumbling stone; as it is written, behold, I lay in Zion a stumbling stone and rock of offense; and whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed.

Romans 1:16-17 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ; for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek. For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith; as it is written, the just shall live by faith.

Romans 2: 1-16 Therefore thou art that judgeth; for wherein thou judgeth another, thou condemnest thyself; for thou that judgeth doest the same things.
But we are sure that the judgment of God is according to truth against them which commit such things.
And thinkest thou this, O man, that judgeth the same, that that thou shalt escape the judgment of God?
Or despises thou the riches of his goodness and forbearance and longsuffering; not knowing that the goodness of God leadeth thee to repentance?
But after thy hardness and impenitence heart treasurest up unto thyself wrath against the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God.

II Peter 3: 3-7 Knowing this first, that there shall come in the last day's scoffers, walking after their own lusts, and saying, where is the promise of his coming?
For since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation.
For this they willingly are ignorant of, that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of the water and in the water; whereby the world that then was, being overflowed with water, perished; but the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reversed unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men.

Who will render to every man according to his deeds; to them who by patient continuance in well-doing seek for glory and honor and immortality, eternal life; but unto them that are contentious, and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, indignation and wrath, tribulation and anguish upon every soul of man that doeth evil, of the Jew first, and also to the Gentile; for there is no respect of persons with God.

For as many as have sinned without law shall also perish without law; and as many, as have sinned in the law shall be judged by the law; (For not the hearers of the law are just before God, but the doers of the law shall be justified.

For when the Gentiles, which have not the law, do by nature the things contained in the law, these, having not the law, are a law unto themselves; which show the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing witness, and their thoughts the mean while accusing or else excusing one another, In the day when God shall judge the secrets of men by Jesus Christ according to My Gospel.

Isaiah 5: 19 -24 Let the counsel of the Holy One of Israel draw neigh and come, that we may know it!
Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!
Woe unto them that are wise in their own eyes, and prudent in their own sight! Woe unto them that are mighty to drink wine, and men of strength to mingle strong drink; which justify wicked for reward, and take the righteousness of the righteous from Him!
Therefore as the fire devoured the stubble, and the flame consumeth the Chaff, so their root shall be as rottenness, and their blossom shall go up as dust; because they have cast away the law of the Lord of hosts, and despised the word of the Holy One of Israel.

Hosea 4: 1 -10 Hear the word of the Lord, ye children of Israel; for the Lord hath a controversy with the inhabitants of the land, because there is no truth, nor mercy, nor knowledge of God the Father in the land.
By swearing, and lying, and killing, and committing adultery, they break out, and blood toucheth blood.
Therefore shall the land mourn, and every one that dwelleth therein shall languish, with the bests of the field, and with the fowls of heaven; yea, the fishes of the sea also shall be taken away.
Yet let no man strive, nor reprove another; for thy people are as they that strive with the priest.
Therefore shalt thou fall in the day, and the prophet also shall fall with thee in the night, and I will destroy thy mother.

My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge; because thou hast rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee, that thou shalt be no priest to me; seeing thou hast forgotten the law of God, I will also forget thy children.
As they were increased, so they sinned against me; therefore will I change their glory into shame.
They eat up the sin of my people, and they set their heart on their iniquity.
And there shall be, like people, like priest; and I will punish them for their ways, and reward them their doing.
For they shall eat, and not have enough; they shall commit whoredom, and shall not increase; because they have left off to take heed to the Lord.

Galatians 5: 1- 6 Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage.
Behold, I Paul say unto you, that if thee be circumcised, Christ shall profit you nothing.
For I testify again to every man that is circumcised, that he is a debtor to do the whole law. Christ becomes of no effect unto you, whosoever of you are justified by the law; ye are fallen from grace. For us though the Spirit waits for the hope of righteousness by faith.
For in Jesus Christ neither circumcision availed anything, nor uncircumcision, but faith which worketh by love.

Romans 7: 1-12 Know ye not, brethren, for I speak to them that know the laws, how that the law hath dominion over a man as long as he liveth?
For the woman which hath a husband is bound by law to her husband so long as he liveth; but if the husband is dead, she is loosed from the of her husband.
So then if, while her husband liveth, she be married to another man she shall be called an adulteress; but if her husband is dead, she is free from that law; so that she is no adulteress, though she is married to another man.
Wherefore, my brethren, ye also are become dead to the law by the body of Christ; that ye should be married to another, even to him who is raised from the dead, that we should bring forth fruit unto God.
For when we were in the flesh, the motion of sin, which were by the law, did work in our members to bring forth fruit unto death. But now we are delivered from the law, that being dead wherein we were held; that we should serve in newness of spirit, and not in the oldness of the letter. What do we say then?

Is the law sin? God forbid.
Nay, I had not known sin, but the law; for I had not known lust, except the law had said, Thou shalt not covet.
But sin, taking occasion by the commandments, wrought in me all manner of concupiscence.
For without the law sin was dead.
For I was alive with the law once; but when the commandments came, sin revived, and I died.
And the commandments, which were ordained to life, I found to be unto death.
For sin, taking occasion by the commandments, deceived me, and by it show me. Wherefore the law is holy, and the commandments holy, and just, and good.

Romans 5: 2 -12 Wherefore, as by one man sin entered in the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned; (For until the law sin was in the world, but sin is not imputed when there is no law.
Nevertheless, death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over them that had not sinned after the similitude of Adam’s transgression.
Who is the figure of Him that was to come? But not as the offense, so also is the free gift. For if through the offense of one many be dead, much more the grace of God the Father, and the gift by grace, which by one man, Jesus
Christ, hath abounded unto many. And not as it was by one the sinned, so is the gift; for the judgment was by one to condemnation, but the free gift is of many offenses unto justification.
For if by one man’s offense death reigned by one; much more they which receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by one, Jesus Christ.)
Therefore as by the offense of one judgment came upon all men to condemnation; even so the righteousness of one the free gift came upon all men unto justification of life.
For as by one man’s disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous.

Matthew 7: 11 If ye then, being evil, know how to give gifts unto your children, how much more shall your Father which is in heaven give good things to them that ask Him?

Psalms 51:17 The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise. Moreover, the law entered, that the offense might abound.
But where sin abounded, grace did much more abound; that as sin hath reigned unto death, even so, might grace reign through righteousness unto eternal life by Jesus Christ our Lord.

Romans 7:13-25 Was then that which is good made death unto me? God forbid. But sin, that it might appear sin, working death in me by that which is good; that sin by the commandments might become exceeding sinful. For that which I do, I allow not; for what I would, that do not; but what I hate, that do I.
If then I do that which I would not, I consent unto the law that it is good.
Now then it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me.
For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing; for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not.
For the good that I do not; but the evil which I would not, that I do. No, if I do that I would not, it is no more I that do it., but sin that dwelleth in me.
I find then a law, that when I would do good, evil is present with me. For I delight in the law of God after the inward man; but I see another law in my member’s warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members.

Acts 13: 33-39 God hath fulfilled the same unto us their children, in that he hath raised up Jesus again; as it is also written in the second
psalm, thou art my son, this day have I begotten thee.
Ask of me, and I shall give thee the heathen for thine inheritance, and the uttermost part of the earth for thy possession.
Thou shalt break them with a rod of iron; thou shalt dash them in pieces like a potter’s vessel.
Be wise now therefore, O ye kings; be instructed, ye judges of the earth.
Serve the Lord with fear, and rejoice with trembling. Kiss the Son, lest he is angry, and ye perish from the way, when his wrath is kindled but a little.
Blessed are all they that put their trust in Him, And as concerning that he raised him up from the dead, now no more to return to corruption, he said on this wise, I will give you the sure mercies of David.
Wherefore he saith also in another psalm, for thou wilt did not leave my soul in hell; neither with thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption. But to the saints that are in the earth, and to the excellent, in whom is all my delight.
Their sorrows shall be multiplied that hasten after another god; their drink offerings of blood will I not offer, nor take up their name into my lips. For

David
, after he had served his own generation by the will of God, fell on sleep, and was laid unto his father, and saw corruption; but he, whom God raised again, saw no corruption.
Be it known unto you, therefore, men and brethren, that through this man is preached unto you the forgiveness of sins; and by him all that believe are justified from all things, from which ye could not be justified by the law of Moses.

Galatians 3: 5 -14 He, therefore, that ministered to you the spirit, and worketh miracles among you, doeth he it by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith?
Even as Abraham believed God the Father, and it was accounted to him for righteousness.
Know thee therefore that they which are of faith, the same are children of Abraham.
And the scripture, foreseeing that God the Father would justify the heathen through faith, preached before the gospel unto Abraham, saying, In thee shall all nations be blessed.
So then they which be of faith are blessed with faithful Abraham. For as many as are of the works of the law are under the curse; for it is written, cursed is every one that continueth not in all things which are in the book of the law to do them.
But that no man is justified by the law in the sight of God, it is evident; for, the just shall live by faith. And the law is not of faith; but, the man that doeth them shall live in them.
Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us; for it is written, cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree; that the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ; that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.

Hebrews 7:11- 28 If therefore perfection were by the Levitical priesthood, (for under it the people received the law), what further need was there that another priest should rise after the order of Melchisedec, and not be called after the order of Aaron?
For the priesthood has changed, there is made of necessity a change also of the law.
For he of whom these things are spoken pertained to another tribe, of which no man gave the attendance of the altar.
For it is evident that our Lord sprang out of Juda; of which tribe Moses spake nothing concerning priesthood.

And it is yet for more evident; for that after the similitude of Melchisedec there ariseth another priest, who is made, not after the law of a carnal commandment, but after the power of an endless life. For he testifieth, thou art a priest forever after the order of Melchizedek.
For there is verily a disannulling of the commandment going before for the weakness and unprofitable mess thereof.
For the law made nothing perfect, but the bringing in of a better hope did; by the which we draw nigh unto God the Father.
And inasmuch as not without an oath, he was made priest; (for those priests were made without an oath; but this with an oath by Him that said unto Him, The Lord sware and will not repent.
Thou art a priest forever after the order of Melchisedec); by so much was Jesus made a surety of a better testament.
And they truly were many priests, they were not suffered to the uttermost that come unto God by Him, seeing he never liveth to make intercession for them.

For such a high priest became us, who is holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, and made higher than the heaven; who needeth not daily, as those high priests, to offer up sacrifice, first for his own sins, and then for the people’s for this he did once when he offered up himself.
For the law maketh men high priests which have infirmity; but the word of the oath, which was since the law, maketh the Son, who is consecrated forevermore.

Hebrews 8:1-13 Now of the things which we have spoken this is the sum; we have such a high priest who is set on the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens; a minister of the sanctuary, and of the true tabernacle, which the Lord pitched, and not man.
For every high priest is ordained to offer gifts and sacrifices;
wherefore it is of necessity that his man has somewhat also to offer.
For if he were on earth, he should not be a priest, seeing that there are priests that offer gifts according to the law; who serve unto the example and shadow of heavenly things, as Moses was admonished of God the Father when he was about to make the tabernacle; for, see saith he, that thou make all things according to the pattern showed to thee in the mount. But now hath he obtained a more excellent ministry, by how much also he is the mediator of a better covenant, which was established upon better promises.
For if that first covenant had been faultless, then should no place have been sought for the second.
For finding fault with them, he saith, Behold the days comes, saith the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah; not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day when I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt; because they continued not in my covenant, and I regarded them not, saith the Lord.
For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, saith the Lord; I will put my laws into their mind, and write them in their hearts, and I will be to them a God, and they shall be to me a people; and they shall not teach every man his neighbor, and every man his brother, saying know the Lord; for all know me, from the least to the greatest.
For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and their iniquities will I remember no more.
In that he saith, a new covenant, he hath made the first old.
Now that which decayeth and waxeth old is ready to vanish away.

Romans 8:1-11 There is therefore now no condemnation to them who are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the spirit. For the law of the spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death.
For what the law could not d, in that it was weak through the flesh, God the Father sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in flesh, that the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the spirit.
For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh, but they that are after the Spirit the things of the spirit.
For to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.
Because the carnal mind is enmity against God the Father; for it is not subject to the law of God the Father, neither indeed can be. So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God.
But ye are not in the flesh, but in the spirit, if so be that the spirit of God dwells in you.
Now if any man has not the spirit of Christ, he is none of his.
And if Christ is in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the spirit is life because of righteousness.
But if the spirit of Him that raised up from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you.

Roman 10: 4 For Christ is the end of the Laws for righteousness to everyone that believeth.

II Corinthians 2: 3-11 And I wrote this same unto you, lest when I came, I should have sorrow from them of whom I ought to rejoice; having confidence in you all, that my joy is the joy of you all.
For out of much affliction and anguish of heart I wrote unto you with many tears; not that I should be grieved, but that ye might know the love which I have more abundantly unto you.
But if any have caused grief, he hath not grieved me, but in part; that I may not overcharge you all.
Sufficient to such a man is this punishment, which was inflicted on many.
So that contrariwise ye ought rather forgive him, and comfort him, lest perhaps such a one should be swallowed up with overmuch sorrow.
Wherefore I beseech you that ye would confirm your love toward Him.
For to this end also did I write, that I might know the proof of you, whether ye be obedient in all things.
To whom ye forgive anything, I forgive also; for if I forgave anything, to whom I forgave it, for your sakes forgave I it in person of Christ; lest Satan should get an advantage of us; for we are not ignorant of his devices.

Galatians 2: 11-21 But when Peter came to Antioch, I withstood him to the face, because he was to be blamed.
For before that certain came from James, he did eat with the Gentiles; but when they came, he withdrew and separated himself, fearing them which were of the circumcision.
And the other Jews dissembled likewise with him; insomuch that Barnabas also was carried away with their dissimulation.
But when I saw that they walked not uprightly according to the truth of the gospel, I said unto Peter before them all, If thou being a Jew, livest after the manner of Gentiles, and not as do the Jews, why compellest thou the Gentiles to live as do the Jews?
We who are Jews by nature, and not sinners of the Gentiles, knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ that we might be justified by faith f Christ, and not by the works of the law; for by the works of law shall no flesh be justified.
But if, while we seek to be justified by Christ, we ourselves also are found sinners, is, therefore, Christ the minister of sin?
God forbid.
For if I build again the things which I destroyed, I make myself a transgressor.
For I through the law am dead to the law, that I might live unto God. I am crucified with Christ; nevertheless, I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me; and the life, which I now live in the flesh, I live by the faith of the son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me. I do not frustrate the grace of God; for if righteousness comes by the law, then Christ is dead in vain.

Luke 16: 15-18 Ye are they which justify yourselves before men, but God knoweth your hearts; for that which is highly esteemed among men is abomination in the sight of God the Father.
The law and the prophets were until John; since that time the kingdom of God is preached, and every man presseth into it.
And it is easier for heaven and earth to pass, than one title of the law to fail.
Whosoever putteth away his wife, and marrieth another, committeth adultery; and whosoever marrieth her that is put away from her husband committeth adultery.

Isaiah 2: 2- 4 And it shall come to pass in the last days, that the mountain of the Lord’s house shall be established in the top of the mountains, and shall be exalted above the hills; and all nations shall flow unto it.
And many people shall go and say, come ye, and let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, to the house of the God the Father of Jacob; and he will teach us of his ways, and we will walk in his paths; for out of Zion shall go forth the law and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem.
And he shall judge among the nation, and shall rebuke many people; and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears with pruning hooks; nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more.

I Timothy 1: 5 -11 Now the end of the commandment is charity out of a pure heart, and of a good conscience, and of faith unfeigned; from which some having survived have turned aside unto vain jangling; Desiring to be teachers of the law; understanding neither what they say, nor whereof they affirm.
But we know that the law is good if a man use it lawfully; knowing this, that the law is not made for a righteous man, but for the lawless and disobedient, for the ungodly and for sinners, for unholy and
profane, for murderers of fathers and murderers of mothers, for manslayers, for whoremongers, for them that defile themselves with mankind, for men stealers, for liars, for perjured persons, and if there be any other things, that thing that is contrary to sound doctrine; according to the glorious gospel of the blessed God the Father, which was committed to my trust.

Romans 3: 28- 31 Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith without the deeds of the law.
Is he the God of the Jews only?
Is he not also of the Gentiles?
Yes, of the Gentiles also; seeing it is one God, which shall justify the circumcision by faith, and uncircumcision through faith.
Do we then make void the law through faith? God forbid; yea we establish the law.

Hebrews 7:19 For the law made nothing perfect, but the bringing in of a better hope did; by the which we draw neigh unto God.

Psalm 19:7 The law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul; the testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple.

Psalm 119:137-142. Righteous art thou, O Lord, and upright are thy judgments. Thy testimonies that thou hast commanded are righteous and very faithful.
My zeal hath consumed me because mine enemies have forgotten thy words.
Thy word is very pure; therefore thy servant loveth it. I am small and despised, yet do not forget thy precepts.
Thy righteousness is an everlasting righteousness, and thy law is the truth.

John 1:14 -18 And the word became flesh and blood and dwelt among us, and we behold His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.
John bore witness of Him and cried out, comes after me is preferred before me, for He was before me.
And of His fullness, we, have all received, and grace for grace.
For the law was given through Moses, but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. No man or one has seen God the Father at any age.

Revelation 20:11-15 And I saw a great white throne, and Him that sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them.
And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God the Father; and the books were opened; and another book was opened, which is the book of life; and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works.
And the sea gave up the dead which was in it, and death and hell delivered up the dead which was in them, and they were judged every man according to their works.
And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.

Revelation 6: 14-17 Then the heaven departed as a scroll when it is rolled together, and every mountain and island were moved out of their place.
And the kings of the earth, and the great men, rich men, and the chief captains, and the mighty men and every bondman, and every free man, hid themselves in the dens and the rocks of the mountains; and said to the mountains and rocks, fall on us, and hide us from the face of Him that sitteth on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb; for the Great day of His wrath is come, and we shall be able to stand?

Revelation 18: 22- 24 And the sound of harpists, musicians, flutists, and trumpeters shall not be heard in you anymore.
No craftsman of any craft shall be found in you anymore, and the sound of a millstone shall not be heard in you anymore.
The light of a lamp shall not shine in you anymore, and the voice of bridegroom and bride shall not be heard in you anymore.
Then a mighty angel took up a stone like a great millstone and threw it into the sea of fire, saying thus with violence the great City of Babylon shall be thrown down, and shall not be found anymore.
For your merchants were the great men of the earth, for by your sorcery all the nations were deceived.
And in her was found the blood of prophets and saints, and of all who were slain on the earth.
Let us be glad and rejoice and give Him glory, for the marriage of the Lamb has come, and His wife has made herself ready. Amen.

Hello again 'TheWordIsOne,

I notice that your question is in the past tense, 'What was the law for?
Does this mean that you believe that the law is now obsolete? That it has no present application?

Sin - Transgression of the divine law

Galatians 2:17-1. Paul strongly rejects the erroneous conclusion that being justified by faith in Christ actually made Jews sinners thus paining Christ as a promoter of sin. Those who attempt the works of the Law, as having any part in justification are cursed
(
Read Gal. 3:10). If anyone attempts to reassert through the works of the law as having any part in justification before God of Israel, the law itself is a transgressor (Read Gal. 19-25). The Law itself is not sinful; its purpose Convince the individuals of their personal spiritual deadness in sin outside of faith in Christ. (Read Romans 2:20)

1 John 3:4-5 (KJV) Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law. And ye know that he was manifested to take away our sins, and in him is no sin.

1 John 3:4-6 (NKJV) Whoever commits sin also commits lawlessness, and sin is lawlessness.
And you know that He was manifested to take away our sins, and in Him, there is no sin.
Whoever abides in Him does not sin. Whoever sins has neither seen Him nor known Him.

Romans 2:12 6 (NKJV) For as many as have sinned without law will also perish without the law, and as many as have sinned in the law will be judged by the law

Revelation 12:10 (NKJV) Then I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, "Now salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of His Christ have come, for the accuser of our brethren, who accused them before our God day and night, has been cast down.

Revelation 1:18 (KJV) I am he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive forevermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death.

Note: And having the keys of hell And of living and the death this is divine law

Colossians 2:11-15 (KJV) In whom also ye are circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, in putting off the body of the sins of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ:
Buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye have risen with him through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead.
And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath he quickened together with him, having forgiven you all trespasses;
Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross; And having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a show of them openly, triumphing over them in it.

Colossians 2:11-15 (NKJV) In Him you were also circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, by putting off the body of the sins of the flesh, by the circumcision of Christ, buried with Him in baptism, in which you also were raised with Him through faith in the working of God, who raised Him from the dead.
And you, being dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He has made alive together with Him, having forgiven you all trespasses, having wiped out the handwriting of requirements that was against us, which was contrary to us. And He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross.
Having disarmed principalities and powers, He made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them in it.

The Law, in this case, is abolished, those in Christ, now the law is to only to those, to convict the individuals who still serve or under the law, bring them to condemnation, Ministers of Righteousness, Self–Righteous Men, Ministering under the law

2 Corinthians 11:15 (KJV) Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also are transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works.

Note: it should be, according to their works of the Law,

Romans 6:9 — We are sure of this because Christ was raised from the dead, and he will never die again. Death no longer has any power over him.

This is the law of Moses, now Grace is in Motion, by the Spirit of Grace

Romans 14:9 — Christ died and rose again for this very purpose—to be Lord both of the living and of the dead.

The Period of Grace

I have said that grace has a limit, yes it does have a limit, meaning by one disgrace and of the insulting the blood of the Holy One, which the blood of the Covenant. You know what is blasphemy
When the fullness of grace is complete, and no one will know its end, Grace ends at the Day of the Lord.
The law is still active but abolished in the Lord's children, they will not see any justice in heaven.

Hebrews 10: 28 He that despised Moses' law died without mercy under two or three witnesses:

In the Law of Moses,
there is no mercy, by this, we would have all have died in sin, so who is still ministering the law will die. Who so ever disgrace and insulting the blood of the Holy One, which the blood of the Covenant will die by the Law of Moses If they but an image of Christ back to a cross as a display this is them that keep crucifying him again and again, like the Catholic Mass, and these people are still in their sins they will die by the Law of Moses without mercy and Mass giver will pay for their sins as in Ezekiel the watcher
While we as Christen the children of the Covenant on earth, Christ will remind us and can chastise us, and chase us, until you are blameless at the end of Grace, not saying that the Spirit of Grace is with us in heaven

Read Hebrews 12:10 - 13 (KJV)
Read Romans 6:1-23 (KJV) Hebrews 10:27-31 (KJV)

Now about Satan he had at one time when he wasn’t Satan had the key of death, I do not know about life, anyway at the cross Christ defeated Satan, by wounding his head and Satan wounding Christ at the cross, giving Christ all authority over death, now Christ raised of this death at the cross, and defeating Satan, and Christ came is alive, this is the resurrection, now having the key of life and of death.

Satan has no authority over death nor life, and after Grace came upon all men and their families. Then at a certain time, to fulfill all laws to bear, the Holy Spirit is in motion, and at any giving time, did you get right with God?

Revelation 1: 18 I am He that is alive and was dead; and, behold, I am alive forevermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death.

The defeat of Satan at the cross

Revelation 1:17-18 (KJV) And when I saw him, I fell at his feet as dead. And he laid his right hand upon me, saying unto me, Fear not; I am the first and the last:
Christ came is alive, this is the resurrection

Romans 6:9-10 (KJV) Knowing that Christ being raised from the dead diet no more; death hath no more dominion over him.
For in that he died, he died unto sin once: but in that he lives, he lives unto God.

Romans 14:9 (KJV) For to this end Christ both died, and rose, and revived, that he might be Lord both of the dead and living.

For every high priest is ordained to offer gifts and sacrifices;
wherefore it is of necessity that his man has somewhat also to offer.

Amen.
The "LAW", the Torah, is God's Law and is still Holy and Petfect and relative today.

Since Man failed at being "PERFECT, GOD gave us Jesus and who so ever believes in Him, despite ourselves, will be saved!

No, Justification only comes by way of Jesus; to every who believes in Him, God Justfies...(just as if
they never have sinned) !
