Is addiction a sin or is it disease ??

Yes, but you are coming out of the wood work here with stuff that has nothing to do with the OP. It doesn't matter if God doesn't have sin or can never become addicted to anything, we are not talking about GOD...the OP addresses human beings and addiction. You coming out of nowhere like you have done ...honestly...makes it seem like you have no clue about the discussion at all. No insult intended, but that's what it looks like.
No, this is a Talk Jesus forum and addictions are a human sin no matter what the cause ( like it's a disease or not) and very pertinent to discuss here.
So, where is the proof that I mis-spoke and made accusations regarding Shaolin?

BA...where is your Biblical proof? So far, you are just talking...

Greetings @Dave M

Firstly, this thread has become a nasty argumentative discussion.
I do apologise on behalf of Talk Jesus that it has turned out this way.
Reply bans have been placed on a couple of members.

Addiction in itself is a disease, - the bodies need for a substance or activity that it has become physically or mentally dependent upon.

Feeding that addiction constantly and not trusting the Lord to deliver is sin.
Christians might as well say - I don't trust Christ to deliver me from that addiction to smoking, coffee, alcohol etc
And they are really saying...... I prefer keeping up that addiction rather than giving it up......preferring to stay addicted and dismissing Christ.
It is like saying:

Alcohol is better than Jesus
Tobacco is better than Jesus
Drugs are better than Jesus
Gambling is better than Jesus
Coffee is better than Jesus*

One might as well say .......He is not able

But praise God He is able.

Now unto Him that is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of His glory with exceeding joy,
To the only wise God our Saviour, be glory and majesty, dominion and power, both now and ever. Amen.
Jude verses 24 and 25

* I am not finger pointing. I have been an alcohol and substance user in the past......Delivered from it Praise the Lord
I have been drinking between 3 and 5 coffees per day .....didn't think I was addicted until I tried not to have one and felt quite jittery.
My body obviously craves. I listed to a sermon on caffeine addiction. Have cut down and will stop.

Can you give a science journal article that demonstrates that addiction is a verifiable disease? What virus causes it? What germ causes it? What genetic abnormality causes it?

The world calls it a disease in order to make the addicted feel better about himself, like its not his fault. And that is a lie. You claimed that addiction is a disease, but gave no scientific evidence to support that claim.

Just saying.

Jesus portrayed sin as a disease. That's why He is at times called the Great Physician.

As a mental health clinician I was going to weigh in on my clinical and professional Christian opinion; but I read your
quote and you summed it up beautifully, so nothing more for me to add.

Well said, I agree 100%.

I agree that sin is a spiritual disease...but we are not talking about a spiritual disease (sin), we are talking about what the world calls an addiction. They call it a disease - and again, where is the evidence for that? What virus or germ or genetic mutation causes an addiction? There are none. Therefore, by the basic definition of what a disease is, an addiction is not a disease. That is my point.

@Shaolin ,Let me help you out, and you can read as well @Born Again 2004 , @Rhema , @Fragrant Grace , @PloughBoy @Br. Bear , @Whendancer @Dave M and @B-A-C

So the word disease comes from the medical model.
Later came the mental health model which borrows from the medical model but also draws from the psychology/counseling foundations.
In the medical model diseases are seen as biological and treated in such a way that tries to alter body chemistry or change the physical state
of one's body ( body chemistry balance, viruses, bacteria, etc etc)

However in the mental health model we don't use the word disease, we use the word disorder. Dis-order as the word points to, means that something
is out of order. This often relates to one's thought processes which often shapes cognition and form certain behaviors and patterns due to
learned behaviors, social conditioning, and pathological habits due to life choices and our reactions to what has happened to us.

So when we look at addiction, there is a biological and mental component. There is also a spiritual component as well. We can
see the spiritual component in the fact that most successful programs such as Alcoholics Anonymous incorporate principles of spirituality

The issue is however is, we try to separate these 3 as distinct separate domains that do not overlap, However that is not the case.

Let's start with the spiritual component, people can be tempted and led spiritually to start certain habits which lead to addiction
such as drinking. There is the spiritual component of being drawn into sin and spiritual bondage, There is next the mental
component about our thoughts and how we may find this action as part of our routine and grow in dependency by
using something as a way to cope. So our mind actually gets modeled to see this habit as part of our lifestyle. Next there
is the physical aspect in which our body chemistry is changed through addiction (drugs) behaviors and these tendencies

--Example epigenetics - can be passed down to our children and they become more predisposed to be alcoholics because the parents were.

So the concept of addiction is complex, there is a spiritual, mental, and physical component. We try to separate them but we
are body , soul , and spirit and what we do in one domain of our being impacts the other. Emptiness in our spirit can lead one
to seek out self destructive ways of coping, negative cognitive patterns can lead to those behaviors a disorderly way of thinking,
and if you do such a behavior long enough, physical addiction becomes an issues as your physical chemistry changes as your
brain is rewires through neuro-plasticity and changes in your neuro-transmitters, etc.

So while addiction is not a "disease" such as a virus or bacteria, it does have physical impacts on our body chemistry.
And the spiritual sins of the grand and great grand parents can predispose their children to be at greater risk or suffering from addiction.
However, no matter how much you are predispose to something, if you never start drinking, you will not have the physical dependency.
But if you are predispose and your start, you may find yourself in bondage physically and spiritually, much quicker than another person
whose grand parents did not battle with that issue and thus have passed their genetic make up to them. -- Sin has consequences. --
Look at Adam and Eve for example, their sin predisposed all of humanity to sin. We see this quickly as Cain, their child was now susceptible
to anger and killed his brother. So we may want to say it is not fair for God to have someone be born with the struggle of addiction
if addiction is a sin, but if you think about it, we are actually all born sinners, which is why we need Jesus.

Jesus will free our spiritual bondage, good counseling can help you change your thought patterns, and if you do that long enough keeping
away from
those spirits and not repeating those negative thought patterns and behaviors, your
body will rewire itself physically, so that it is back in EASE and ORDER.
(opposed to Dis-Ease & Dis-Order).

I'll modify my quote above and add

---"Jesus will free our spiritual bondage, good counseling( as well as reading God's WORD ) can help you change your thought patterns, and if you do that long enough keeping
away from those spirits and not repeating those negative thought patterns and behaviors, your
body will rewire itself physically, so that it is back at EASE and ORDER. (opposed to Dis-Ease & Dis-Order)."

Addiction to reading scripture isnt sin. Neither is helping others in need, even if it hurts our own situation. So addiction alone isnt a sin. I would simply say that you can be addicted to sin. Then it comes to whether some habitual sins are done out of some inability to stop, or so wanting the sin, that you habitually give in to them in weak moments (if you regret them at all).
Yes, it is a sin.
Anything that is not of God is a sin.
God is Holy and perfect; we are not.
We are prophane when compared to God.

Is addiction a sin or is it disease ?? that is the question, please back up your answer with Love and patience with those that do not agree with you, and of course scripture.
Hello @Dave M,

I do not believe it can be classified by either 'sin' or 'disease'. What does the word of God have to say about the, 'deceitful lusts,' and ,'fleshly lust,' that war against the soul (ie., the whole man)?

'This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord,
that ye henceforth walk not as other Gentiles walk, in the vanity of their mind,
Having the understanding darkened,
being alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them,
because of the blindness of their heart:
Who being past feeling have given themselves over unto lasciviousness,
to work all uncleanness with greediness.
But ye have not so learned Christ;
If so be that ye have heard Him, and have been taught by Him, as the truth is in Jesus:
That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man,
which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts;
And be renewed in the spirit of your mind;

And that ye put on the new man,
which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.
Wherefore putting away lying, speak every man truth with his neighbour:
or we are members one of another.
Be ye angry, and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath:
Neither give place to the devil.
(Eph 4:17-27)

'Dearly beloved, I beseech you as strangers and pilgrims,
abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul;
Having your conversation honest among the Gentiles:
that, whereas they speak against you as evildoers,
they may by your good works, which they shall behold,
glorify God in the day of visitation.'
(1 Peter 2:11-12)

* These lusts are fleshly and deceitful. They deceive the mind and body that they cannot live without them, and then steadily destroy both. It has nothing to do with individual sin, there is no condemnation for such, only great pity and a desire to help them to escape the net that the enemy of their souls has laid for them, with prayer and perseverance. They must be renewed in the spirit of their mind, and strengthened in faith.

' Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God:
for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth He any man:
But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed.
Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin:
and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death.
Do not err, my beloved brethren.'
(Jas 1:13-16)

Thank you
In Christ Jesus
Chris

Interesting and well written. It doesn't contradict what I said, however, but I don't know if that was your goal or not.

Blessings!

Addiction is a violation of the First Commandment.

Addiction is a violation of the First Commandment.
I can attest to this! Instead of going to the Lord I went to the bottle. I trusted in it. It quelled my anxiety (though it caused it too!) I looked for its relief daily at the end of the work day. It was my reward as well in putting in a hard week's work, so the weekends it was time to throw down! To enjoy an evening with my family, I needed the bottle! But God's mercy!!
