Can One Pray in the Spirit Without Speaking in Tongues?

Member
Yes. Tongues is an alternate language to spread to gospel or divine message to someone in their native tongue. It must be received by someone else or have some sort of interpreter. Today, its a mockery of people spewing gibberish to seem more holy. But every gift is for the edification of the body of Messiah. SO thats a way to gage each display as legitimate.

I believe you can pray in the spirit without speaking a different language. Communicating with the Father on your or others can be done without audible sound.

1Cor 14:2; For he who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God, for no one understands him; however, in the spirit he speaks mysteries.
1Cor 14:14; For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my understanding is unfruitful.

Rom 8:26; Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.

Not all Spirit-filled believers have the gift of speaking in tongues, but every Spirit-filled believer will pray in the Spirit. You probably remember the time you prayed in the Spirit: you sought deliverance for yourself or someone else, your heart was pounding through your chest, your voice was cracking and quivering, and tears flowed uncontrollably through your hands that covered your face in shame. And then, somehow, at some time later on, you saw that your prayer was answered. GOD is AWESOME.

I especially like the third verse you shared...It does not say that the Holy Spirit makes intercessions in other languages...but with groanings that cannot be uttered

1Cor 13:11-12 . . When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I
reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put childish ways behind me.

In context, one of the things that passage relates to is tongues, i.e. people
obsessed with tongues are like children playing with Barbie dolls and Tonka Trucks.

1Cor 14:13-15 . . If I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my mind is unfruitful. So
what shall I do? I will pray with my spirit, but I will also pray with my mind; I will sing with
my spirit, but I will also sing with my mind.

I was informed by a Charismatic friend that he prayed in a tongue because he couldn't
express his deepest feelings any other way. Mind you this was an American adult of
almost fifty years old; educated in America and spoke, wrote, and read English; his
native language his entire life. So I asked him how it is that his command of the English
was so poor that he could only express his thoughts in a language that not even he
himself could either identify or understand?

Mozart composed some amazing music; but had he not arranged the components
sensibly, it would likely grate on people's nerves instead of entertaining them; sort of like
when an orchestra verifies the pitch of its instruments just prior to a performance. The
discordant din that the orchestra makes is a cacophony instead of a rhapsody.

1Cor 14:7 . . Even in the case of lifeless things that make sounds, such as the flute or
harp, how will anyone know what tune is being played unless there is a distinction in the
notes?

Modern tonguers typically don't compose anything pleasant to the ear. If they would at
least chirp like birds then the sounds coming out of their throats would be a discernible
melody instead of an indistinct noise.

The true gift of tongues is very handy for communicating with foreigners. But in our day
and age, Charismatics typically don't communicate with anybody, either foreign or
domestic . As a result, Charismatics are looked upon with the same disdain as the
kooks that hurl themselves on the floor, faint, scream, shriek, writhe, shout, and dance
with rattlesnakes.

Well; not too many sensible people care to accommodate kooks, so if you're serious
about influencing people for Christ, I highly recommend sticking to an intelligible
language. Here in my country, English is a good choice because most people can
understand it without requiring the services of a translator.

And for heaven's sake, please do not allow yourself to be drawn to participating in a
tongues meeting.

1Cor 14:23 . . So if the whole church comes together and everyone speaks in
tongues, and some who do not understand, or some unbelievers come in, will they not
say that you are out of your mind?

Have you never felt so strongly about a thing that you were not able to express the full scope of what you felt? Have you ever heard the term "speechless"? Yes, you have the words but you simply cannot find one to fit what you feel....If you have never been there then you have never truly lived. Even I, with no emotion, can understand that.

At times like those, I suggest you remain speechless until you get your feelings
sorted out and can express your concerns intelligently.

"Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with
thanksgiving, present your requests to God." (Phil 4:6)

"For we do not have a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but
one who has been tempted in all things as we are . . . Let us therefore draw near
with confidence to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and may find
grace to help in time of need." (Heb 5:15-16)

The Greek word for "confidence" is parrhesia (par-rhay-see'-ah) which means all
out-spokenness, i.e. frankness, bluntness, and/or candor.

Garbling, choking, weeping, yodeling, and/or clucking one's tongue etc. doesn't
count as outspoken, frank, blunt, and/or candor.

Does anyone speak to their friends, their associates, their spouse, their domestic
partner, their significant other, their doctor, dentist, supermarket cashiers, or the
cops with unintelligible noises? Of course not. They would write us off as one in
desperate need of therapy if we did.

Don't you think the supreme being looks upon tonguers as mental cases when they
do that? Of course He does; who wouldn't? How would you like it if everybody
spoke to you like that? Well, He doesn't like it either. God has a higher IQ than
anybody you could possibly name and tonguers are treating Him like one of those
stone heads on Easter Island. Christianity's God is a sentient, sensible person; and
we all need to grow up and show some respect for His intelligence. I've no doubt He
will appreciate your regard.

I would suggest that a Christian be Spirit led, rather than logic led...Our wisdom is the foolishness of God. That being the case you need to put Your wisdom aside and go by what the WORD says....

1 Corinthians 1:25
25 For God’s “nonsense” is wiser than humanity’s “wisdom.”
And God’s “weakness” is stronger than humanity’s “strength.”

Post No.13 makes a good point: Bible leading = Spirit leading.

Well; the Bible has lots to say about the use and abuse of tongues that I'm afraid
quite a few Charismatic folk have made a bad habit of ingnoring.

"Quench not the Spirit" (1Thess 5:19)

Right! Abuse of a good thing is not wise at all. That does not make the thing itself bad though, does it? I can abuse my pickup truck, but that does not make the vehicle a bad thing. There is a defintite and good use for tongues, tongues are good...Speaking in tongues is good....but it can be abused.....Let's not abuse it...Lets lean on the Holy Spirit to guide that gift....like all the others

That's my question
Yes. We must worship in spirit because God is a spirit. So, talking to him in prayer is natural.

As I understand it, what the Bible calls tongues is actually a word for languages.
Jesus told his apostles they were to bring the good news to the world.
He would know to go forth that they'd need to know the languages of the worlds people

Yes, Tongues was a sign to unbelieving Israel. Contrary to what some believe it is not a prayer language.
Acts 2 and Ephesians 6 and verse 8, 1Corinthians chapters 13 and 14, seem to disagree. That tongues is not a prayer language.

How do you explain those passages?

Can you show me where in Scripture it's said to be a prayer language? As I pointed out, tongues was given as a sign for unbelieving Israel.
