But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to [fulfill its] lusts. Romans 13:14 NKJV

In today’s passage, the apostle Paul provides a one-two punch for living the victorious Christian life. First, he doesn’t tell the Christian to stand strong in his own strength, but rather to put on the Lord Jesus Christ. That means to take on His ways and to take on His views. Second, the Christian is to make no provision for the flesh. The Greek word for “provision” here means “forethought.”

Are you minding your spirit, making it a priority to put on Jesus Christ every day? If you aren’t doing so daily, hourly even, you stand little chance of winning the battle against the flesh. According to Romans 13:13, the sins of the flesh include drunkenness, sexual immorality, sensuality, quarreling, and jealousy.

What specific steps are you taking to smash provisions for the flesh? Do you need to unsubscribe to a certain cable channel? Attend meetings to help you stay sober? Talk to somebody about your jealous streak? Start an anger management recovery program?

You know your areas of weakness. Paul’s calls you to go on the offensive and take decisive action against them.

Prayer: Lord, I have many weaknesses and all too often I try to stand against them in my own power. Remind me every morning about the importance of putting on Jesus Christ.
