Then King David said to Ornan, "No, but I will surely buy [it] for the full price, for I will not take what is yours for the LORD, nor offer burnt offerings with [that which] costs [me] nothing." 1 Chronicles 21:24 NKJV
Human cultures tend to champion frugality as a costume for selfishness. Few people are willing to pay the price that repentance exacts.
When David’s disobedience hurt the people around him, he attempted to purchase a threshing floor to sacrifice a burnt offering. When the owner offered it freely, David surprised him by saying he would not offer a sacrifice that cost him nothing. David knew the harm he had brought on others exacted a heavy price.
When you have wronged someone, do you try to get by with sacrificing as little time as necessary? With saving as much money in the transaction as possible or, like David, do you recognize the deeply personal nature of your offense and pay the full price?
Serving each other requires sacrifices of time, effort, and money. When Paul served in Corinth, he made tents with Aquila and Priscilla, even though he could have required the Corinthians to pay his way. His was not a cheap faith (Acts 18:2-3).
Sacrifice was personal for David and Paul—and for Jesus.
Prayer: Lord, help me remember that Your sacrifice is my inspiration.
