The earth was formless and empty, and darkness covered the deep waters. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the surface of the waters. Genesis 1:2 NLT
Generally it does say that the earth had water. But also it did say it was empty later
Then God said, “Let the waters beneath the sky flow together into one place, so dry ground may appear.” And that is what happened. God called the dry ground “land” and the waters “seas.” And God saw that it was good. Genesis 1:9-10 NLT
Earth didn't have land until God created it so. Technically they arent lying ..its an interpretation. But it didnt say that the earth had to recreated because it didnt have form until God made it.

@Godsangel -- that's what was called the Gap Theory -- a time between Genesis 1:1 and 2. No real basis for it though. They don't intentionally make up lies. Probably a theistic evolutionist came up with it. That way there was 'time' for evolution to take place.
There are those who feel that since God Did create everything , that it would have been perfect 'the first time'. That 'why was it without form and empty" -- Something Must have happened.

As far as I know there's nothing in Scripture to support that idea. People make up a lot of stuff.
There Are those who put a 'gap' between Genesis 1:1 and 2. They aren't satisfied with what God's Word Is telling us. They want to adjust it to Their satisfaction. To them its' not Lying, it's simply not being willing to accept God's truth as God's truth.
God already knew that at some point in the future, there would be those who'd come up with their own theories as to how this world came to be. For some it's theistic evolution for some it's the gap theory. And then there's the concept that 'if it doesn't make sense, then it can't be true'. Well -- I personally don't understand the concept of gravity -- but I know it exists. Ya see it in action all the time. And the concept of Wind. We can Hear it and see the affects Of it -- but it - in and of itself-- is invisible. We Feel the wind / a breeze. But it Is invisible.
And actually -- the Scripture reads : "In the beginning God.... created the heavens and the earth." That explains 'God" -- that He Does exist -- and that He Is the creator. And Then we are told what the original conditions were and that God spoke everything into existence.
Later on in Genesis -- God is acknowledging the evil conditions of mankind -- their / our corruption and decides to destroy and remake everything. Thus, the world-wide flood. He causes the waters from underneath and the rain from above to literally turn the earth upside down and inside out. Noah and his family were the only righteous people at that time. He told Noah to build an ark and how to do it. Every one else drowned and the shape of the earth became mountains and deep oceans. rivers and lakes.

I've heard something similar and while I don't fully accept it, I don't dismiss it completely either: The earth that God formed in genesis was created by Him and something we have no clue of what happened, brought it to that condition. Genesis begins with God renewing it and creating life forms on it but, man was formed of the earth itself as an agent to redeem it. It was his purpose. He was to learn to walk with God in the Garden, to intimately know Him and be the seed of the nation.... But that didn't work out and Abraham seed was chosen for His nation and His Son became the Redeemer for all the nations that call upon Him in spirit and truth.
The thought there is that the whole bible is about redemption. And it points to the physical earth being redeemed by The Father in the beginning and the lives of the earth being redeemed by The Son in the end.

Well -- the Godhead existed from the beginning. That would suggest that somehow the Godhead messed up in the original earth's being created. However, we Do learn that God Did see the evilness of mankind in Genesis and Did see fit to destroy all of life in the flood -- the waters from the deep combined with the rain from above turned the earth inside-out -- only Noah and his family were found righteous in God's eyes which is why they were spared. And they Did become a second Adam and Eve along with along with their wives and children.

Hi BlessedBeyondBelief, You say that man was formed of the earth itself as an agent to redeem it. It was his purpose. He was to learn to walk with God in the Garden, to intimately know Him and be the seed of the nation.... But that didn't work out. That intimates that God made a mistake. The God that is omnipotent, omnipresent and omniscient. God created the earth, the garden, the trees, the serpent (Satan) and Adam and Eve and put them all together. Being the God that is omnipotent, omnipresent and omniscient, would he have made a mistake? or was it part of a scenario that he had in mind to bring man to an understanding, and maturity. As you intimate we don't have the wisdom to understand the intricacies of the mind of God and I should imagine that sending us a teacher to enlighten us was all part of his intention. The teachings of Jesus introduce us to God, his justice and his love and after battling with Satan and his demons we become mature, strong friends of Him, his Son and His Spirit, thus enriching his creation. It might be said, that man has brought the earth to destruction in learning this lesson, but if God can create an earth, it's no big deal for him to bring about a new one. We should rejoice that God would prove his love for mankind by coming to earth as a man and dying on a cross for our salvation. That is love!!!

Hi Sue, in bringing about the flood, God showed the earth His limitations for mankind. Noah was a man who loved the Lord and was chosen to continue mans walk on the earth. He couldn't have been a second Adam because he was, as we all are, born into sin from Adams disobedience. The Second Adam was Jesus who was born of the Spirit of God and as such had no sin. And unlike Adam Jesus overcame Satan making him an alien in Satan's world and all who make covenant with Jesus also become aliens and leave Satan's jurisdictions. Satan needs to ask permission to tempt believers. We all fall short of the glory of God, read Rom chapter 7. Saul before he became Paul was noted as a zealot for God, he was the best and his intention was to rid Israel of Christians. But when he met Jesus he realised how worthless he was as we all do. However he, as we all do, rejoiced in his salvation. Jesus chose Paul to be the Apostle for the gentiles and it's sad to see how many Christians deride Pauls teachings in favour of their own understandings. I'm not intimating that you do that Sue but many do. We are seekers of truth, that's why we debate.
@Trevor -- God created Adam and Eve and put them in a perfect environment -- satan was on earth because he had rebelled in heaven and was thrown out to be down where we are. God had given Adam and then Eve One direction. They chose to listen to satan Instead of listening to God. God had told them One thing, satan had 'adjusted' God's Word to them. They chose to believe the 'adjustment'. Touching that one fruit tree was their Only restriction. But That tree was of the knowledge of both good and Evil. They were told what would happen if they Touched it , much less ate of it.
So -- looking back -- we can see and still Do see just how evil people can be. Left to our own devices -- we are capable of horrendous evil. The Hitlers and Nero's of this world. And people like Jeffry Dahmer -- as horrible a person as he was -- he ended up in prison in solitary -- his father prayed and reached out to him continually -- he finally Did acknowledge and Did accept Jesus Christ as his personal Lord and Savior. He had God's forgiveness but couldn't forgive himself. He'd asked to be put in regular prison surroundings knowing that he wouldn't survive and it wasn't long before he was found dead.
Back to the subject. God actually regretted that He had made mankind. But there Was the one man and his family who'd survived all the evil and still lived a righteous life for God. You commented that Noah was Chosen -- God Knew -- but I wouldn't say he was 'chosen' per se -- he Was the only righteous person Left on earth and was Told by God how to build the ark because He Would destroy all of mankind, and the animal world. God Did start humanity the second time with Noah and his family. And , as a result of the world-wide flood -- the earth ended up Very different than it had been.
It's because of/ through the shedding of the blood of Jesus Christ on the cross -- and His death, burial and bodily resurrection that a person CAN have forgiveness of sins
Saul was definitely determined to rid the world of believers. / Christians. But God got his attention that one day on the road. He had to go through a process to receive his sight again. And then he had to prove himself to God's people. They didn't trust his intentions and for good reasons. And, yes, Paul Was used greatly by being given the ability by the Holy Spirit to write at least those 4 Epistles of the New Testament.
All of Scripture is God's Word -- Moses was Also used Greatly -- he was called a Friend of God. And David / King David was a man after God's own heart. And Solomon was granted to be the wisest?
We all tend to want to 'adjust' God's Word to a certain extent -- it's in our human nature. We all have our little pet sins -- we tell ourselves that God understands us and knows our inner weaknesses and it's not Really hurting anyone else. So.......
Born-again believers Will feel like 'aliens' in this world. The more we are trying to live Godly lives -- the harder it is to do so. But we Will have inner peace -- well -- a more settled inner feeling when we Do manage to live a closer life. And something else will then start getting to us.

Your question is not new, many people have commented in the past, but it is due to a misunderstanding of the format of scripture in these first two chapters of Genesis.
It has often been called the 'gap theory', if you read the scripture like a book without knowledge of the way it is prepared for us, you too can end up thinking this way, which is no doubt why you ask the question.
Genesis chapter 1 sets out for us the stages of creation.
The first 3 days set out the created form...
1 - Light & Dark
2 - Sea and Sky
3 - Fertile ground
The second 3 days, set out the fullness...
4 - the Lights of day and night,
5 - Creatures of water and air
6 - Creatures of the land
And on the 7th day God rested.
These are the stages of creation in their form and fullness, which God created and was pleased.
Then we move to Genesis chapter 2, which starts with
Verses 1 - 3 - Gods 'seal of approval' for all He had created, and for the sequence of the 7 days.
Verses 4 - 6 - Confirms what has happened so far and tells us of the history of the creating of the heavens and the earth,
The creating of man in chapter 1 tells us He made them, male and female, in His Image He made them.
Genesis 1:27 (KJV)
So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.
Here in Chapter 2 we read those extra details, that He breathed into them the breath of life, Note and man 'became' a living soul.
Genesis 2:7 (KJV)
And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.
Moving to your second comment if I may. Why do pastors tells lies.
I do not think any pastor tells lies deliberately, there are many reasons
- the pastor may not be born again, there are many who are caring and academic but not necessarily born again.
- the pastor may be spiritually discerned, due to sin.
- the pastor may be following the beliefs of a denomination, which may times takes precedence over The Word, even though it shouldn't.
- the pastor may have misunderstood, he may be under pressure caring for the flock, etc
There are many reason for untruths being preached, although there is never an excuse for doing so, we are all, as born again believers, ministers of God's Grace, we all have the same responsibility, only preach The Truth.

Then vs 6, Eve notices the tree more and takes a bit of some of the fruit and gives some to Adam. And THEN the eyes of Both of them were 'opened'. They immediately lost their innocence. Life has never been the same since.
Later on in that chapter he stars blaming her and then she blamed the serpent -- so they were All punished. And that punishment extended to the rest of mankind / us.
