How Old is the Earth? Traditional Thought
How old is the Earth? Good question. The Earth was thought to be fairly young (thousands of years old) until the 19th and 20th centuries, when uniformitarianism (which assumes an Old Earth) and evolutionary thought (which demands an Old Earth) became popular in mainstream society.

How Old is the Earth? Recent Consideration
So, how old is the Earth? In the 19th century, it was proposed that the Earth may be as much as 70 million years old. Then, certain evidence was brought to light indicating that evolution was not possible in so short a time. So, the age of the Earth was pushed back. During the 20th century, it was thought that the age of the Earth was as much as 1 billion years old. Now, with the development of radiometric dating and the application of that technique on the meteorite "Allende", it is thought that the world is up to 4.6 billion years old. However, this is not conclusive. The assumptions that are fundamental to radiometric dating are extremely controversial, and are not held to be reasonable by many leading scholars. Furthermore, uniformitarianism has been disproved by such geologic features as poly-strata fossils and the lack of erosion between strata. Moreover, evolution is a theory in crisis with the discovery of DNA and its complex language convention, plus the absence of transitional fossils.

How Old is the Earth? Modern Evidences
By the 21st century, "How Old is the Earth?" has become an increasingly difficult question for Old Earth advocates. Every year, more and more Natural Chronometers indicating a Young Earth are being identified. While the majority of scientists still presuppose an Old Earth, 80% of the observable data indicates a Young Earth. With the weight of evidence indicating a Young Earth, the ranks of Young Earth advocate groups has swelled.

How Old is the Earth? Natural Chronometers
"How old is the Earth?" This question is once again sparking a heated debate. With discoveries such as the following Natural Chronometers, we are at the forefront of a Young Earth revolution:

Our oceans contain concentrations of Aluminum, Antinomy, Barium, Bicarbonate, Bismuth, Calcium, Carbonates, Chlorine, Chromium, Cobalt, Copper, Gold, Iron, Lead, Lithium, Manganese, Magnesium, Mercury, Molybdenum, Nickel, Potassium, Rubidium, Silicon, Silver, Sodium, Strontium, Sulfate, Thorium, Tin, Titanium, Tungsten, Uranium, and Zinc. The river systems add to these concentrations at fixed rates. Comparing the amounts already in the oceans with the rates at which more are being dumped, indicates the earth, as well as its river systems and oceans, are fairly young.

Sediments are being eroded into our oceans at a fixed rate. There are only a few thousand years worth of sediments on the ocean floor.
The Earth's magnetic field has been accurately measured since 1829. Since 1829, it has decayed 7%. It is decaying exponentially at a fixed rate. By graphing the curve, we see that approximately 22,000 years ago the Earth's field would have been as strong as the Sun's. Life would have been impossible.

Comets are constantly losing matter. They are losing and losing and never gaining. "Short Period Comets" (like Haley's comet), which have predictable orbits, should deteriorate to nothing within 10,000 years. Why are there still Short Period Comets?

Jupiter is losing heat twice as fast as it gains it from the Sun (it is five times further from the Sun than Earth). Yet Jupiter is still hot. If it is billions of years old, shouldn't it have cooled off by now?
Jupiter's moon, Ganymede, which is roughly the size of Mercury, has a strong magnetic field, indicating it is still hot. Why hasn't it cooled down?
Saturn's rings are not stable. They are drifting away from Saturn. If Saturn is billions of years old, why does it still have rings?
The Moon is slowly drifting away from the Earth. If it is getting further, at one time it was much closer. The Inverse Square Law dictates that if the Moon were half the distance from the Earth, its gravitational pull on our tides would be quadrupled. 1/3 the distance, 9 times the pull. Everything would drown twice a day. Approximately 1.2 billion years ago, the Moon would have been touching the Earth. Drowning would be the least of our concerns!

Earth's rotation is slowing down. We experience a leap second every year and a half. If the Earth is slowing down, at one time it was going much faster. Besides the problem of extremely short days and nights, the increased "Coriolis Effect" would cause impossible living conditions.
In 1999, the human population passed six billion. In 1985, it passed five billion. In 1962, it passed three billion. In 1800, it passed one billion. In 1 AD, the world's population, according to the censuses taken by the governments of that time, was only 250 million. At the current human population growth rate, considering wars and famines and all such variables, it would take approximately 5,000 years to get the current population from two original people.

Rivers don't deliver elements to the oceans at a fixed rates.
Once a river system has washed a deposit such as salt away, the concentration changes.

Erosion and the deposit of sediment depends on liquid water.
During the Ice age the water was solid and therefore there was less erosion.

The earth's magnetic field has decayed to zero and reversed many many times.
It therefore behaves like a sine wave, not an exponential graph.

Short period comets do deteriorate as they near the sun
There may once have been many more of them and these are the small remains of the biggest.

The heat of Jupeter, like the Earth's one Kwatt per acre, comes from radio active decay.

Saturn's rings may be the result of the collision, close to Saturn, of two ice comets.

The moon was once much closer, tides were higher and 1.2 billion years ago there was no such thing as drowning as "life" was confined to the oceans.

When the earth rotated more quickly, the Coriolis Effect in the oceans would have been there but the speed of moving water in a mountain stream does not extinguish life.

In 1AD, which government recorded the population in Africa, the Americas and Australia ?

Can't see that it really matters. If I take one view over another will affect my salvation? Not a bit.

If anyone can explain exactly what this following verse means then you may have a shot at determining the exact age of the earth.

Dear friends, don’t let this one thing escape you: With the Lord one day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years like one day.
2 Peter 3:8 HCSB

Greek word for day hēmera means a period of time which could be 24 hours or a period of days or... Depends on context.

Greek for thousand chilioi means plural of uncertain affinity.

From this it appears there is no set period of time on which to hang your hat. The Catholic KJV chose to transliterate the words to mean one day or one thousand years. Yet, there is no hard and fast rule stating an exact definition. Of course we can count on the Catholics to slant the meaning to support their views.

As for me I'll wait to ask Yahweh directly when I see Him.

The Bible does tell us that the earth is millions of years old. The proof is in stone from the fossils and even the angel footprints in stone that have been found in Oklahoma, New Mexico, and around the world that have dated 15 million years old. People will argue that carbon dating is not that accurate. Let’s say carbon dating say it 90% inaccurate or wrong, that’s still leaves 1.5 million years. Way longer that flesh man has been around.

Many think that this earth is only about six to seven thousand years old. Well this earth age of flesh man is about that old, starting Genesis 1:3. But this planet earth itself is millions if not ions of years old.

My Christian friend take the blinders off, Gods word tells us of an age, a time, we all lived upon this earth before man was born in the flesh. A time that has been blocked from our memory for the time being. Our memories will be restored of that age upon death of this flesh body. And I am definitely not talking about Re-carnation. RE-INCARNATION IS A LIE. Man lives one time and one time only in this flesh body upon this earth.

When a flesh man so calls dies, only his flesh body ceases to live, his soul/spirit still lives. In reality, no one has experienced the second death at this point, which is the death of the soul/spirit. And that death is final and complete.

Several places in Gods word where God gives clues or just comes out and tells of the earth age that was before the GREAT FLOOD, Job 1:6 and 2:1, when all the sons of God came before the LORD to present themselves and Satan came amongst them. This was a time when Satan was good and he would socialize or mingle with the sons of God. This was a time before Satan’s rebellion took place. This was before God made man flesh by having him born upon this earth through the womb of woman.

The fact that God made the statement that He loved Jacob but hated Esau before they were even born. How could God hate or love someone before they even came through their mothers womb. They where just born and they hadn’t done any good or evil as of yet. Because God knew Jacob and Esau in the first world age, the time period before man was born in the flesh. The time we are in now. God knew both their characters back then and He loved Jacobs actions but hated the actions of Esau.

Jeremiah 1:5. Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee and ordained thee a prophet unto the nations. There again, how could God know Jeremiah before He ever formed him in his mother’s womb. Cause God knew Jeremiah in the previous earth age or time. God had records of Jeremiah preforming great things for Him so He knew He could depend on Jeremiah.

God does not choose or pick someone to do a great work for Him that has not been tested or has not proven themselves worthy of that task. Knowing this, Jeremiah must have done a great work, must have been a mighty warrior in the world that was, in helping God fight back Satan’s attempted rebellion/overthrow among other things. God knew Jeremiah’s true heart and mind from the greats works he accomplished for God in the world that was and He knew Jeremiah was the man for the plan. Jeremiah was one of God’s Elect here on earth during these flesh age.

My friends open your eye and take the blinders off to what Gods word says about how old this earth is. The planet itself is millions of years old, but this flesh life we live in now began six to seven thousand years ago.

KJV is not from the Roman Catholic Church. Early reformers were martyred making the Bible and prayer book available in plain English

Most everything in Scripture points to a 6, day , 24 hr. in length.

The rest for a Sabbath is only one day rather than 1,000 yrs.

The context says that 'the evening and the morning' was a day. In Genesis creation. 'We' have the same length of day Now as they had Then.

Beresheet --- God has all knowledge -- we certainly don't. God knew from the very beginning who was going to be here and what they would be doing. Jeremiah was a prophet chosen by God to give a message to a certain group of people.

Isaiah, Daniel , the major and minor prophets Hosea , Joel, Amos, Obadiah -- look in your own Bible to see all the books in that section. They were all chosen to give a message to various people groups about their need for repentance and acceptance.

They did Not come from any previous time of having already proven themselves. They were all born just like you and I and everyone else. God has a specific 'job' for each person . Born -again believer.

God knows Everyone's heart who has ever lived. This is the Only world that has ever existed. And This world is only 6 - 10,000 years old.

God Has always existed -- the Godhead has always existed. But this world that we are in Now has Not been here That long.

I read a book written by Gerald Shroder the spelling may be wrong the book is titled The Science of God the premise was that the pattern of time and substance of creation mirrors exactly the pattern laid out in Genesis. The declarations of time is given in a way at the beginning of Genesis as it is in no other way in the bible ( the morning and the evening ) he claims is a set measure of time and not days as we count at all. Shroder states that we know there was a big bang and that time is subject to speed and gravity. It passed slower in the beginning and has sped up as the universe expanded. The interesting part comes when humans appear. Once we are on the scene time is never referenced like the first six days ever again. Once we appear time is spoken of in days, weeks, months and years He calls one God time and the other human time.

I had an Earth Science teacher who said that even though the Bible says 7 days, the Hebrew word for day could also be translated to epic, or a long period of time. But what trips me up is that the writer of the Pentateuch was Moses, who grew up in Egypt in a royal family around the same time that the idea of the 24 hour 7 days a week calendar was first created in Egypt. So it makes me wonder, was Moses using the concept of time he was probably taught in the courts, or did he decide to be all poetic and stuff and use יום to mean a thousand years or whatnot?
It’s been proven time and time again that the earth is a lot older than what many creationists argue. So who’s lying?

If I may include myself in your "We"; I am 77 and my day today is at least a millisecond longer than when I was born.

In Genesis chapter 1, God made the earth and the animals and then made people. How did the people know what and when God had done things in the previous 5 days ?
In Genesis chapter 2 God did it again, but this time he took some soil from the ground, made man, breathed life into him, and then decided to plant the Garden of Eden.
I'm not going to say "So who's lying". I'm going to say "These former things have passed away". What maters today, and for the past couple of thousand years, is that we believe in Jesus.
It is Faith that will get us to Heaven, not candles, bells and conjecture as to when God made the Earth.

I have a question of contemplation Faith can you create it within yourself? As for the measures of time I believe it is clear there are 2 different measures being used both of which came from the pen of Moses.

Only God can Create.
No other person can create your faith for you.
Your Faith is not outside you, it is within you.
Like your Soul, It is always and has always been there.
When you believe in Jesus and ask Him to come into your life, your Faith is unbound and It grows to permeates your life.

That is well put Thomas and I believe accurate but if only God can create and I do not dispute it, what are we responsible for?

Our Souls!!!!!!!!.

Or perhaps, from God's point of view, "The Soul with which we have been entrusted" to carry with us, through this life, into the near Hereafter.

You walked around your own conclusion with your answer but I will look through to your insistent approach and read it as an expression of Loyalty to God. You are right to say that God is The Author of our Faith. The real question is how can we get Him to write?

When you use that little word "I", What did you mean when you wrote ".............I believe accurate........" ?
When you say "I" see, actually you mean, "I" see with my eye.
"I" think with my brain,
"I" believe with all my heart.
"I" taste with my tongue.
"I" feel with my fingers.
"I" kick with my foot.
"I" was born on ??/??/?????
"I" was conceived on..........
"I" died on.........
"I" will be remembered by.

Time does not seem to constrict "I" or restrict it to any one part of our bodies.

Now, if we turn to Luke 16 V9.
In many of Jesus parables, he talks of "A sower went forth to sow", "The mustard seed" or "The wheat and tares", but in this story, He speaks of actual people. People about whom, in those parts, that they knew or had heard of; the beggar Lazarus, who died at Dives gate.
And yet, as Jesus tells us, after death in the near Hereafter, some element of Dives and Lazarus still exists.
Dives says "I" beg you..........."I" have five brothers........
Lazarus, we are told, is by Abraham's side, while Dives, separated by a great chasm, pleads for just one drop of water on his tongue.
The separation is not the point here, but that some element has passed from this life, to the next.
The "I" was there at conception; it felt and tasted; and yet after death the "I"could beg.
I may well be wrong, but I put it to you, that this "I", is a soul, entrusted to us, and it is our moral duty to do the best that we can for it throughout our mortal life.
