The word is usually rendered as "hamartia" in the new testament.
It is usually chata'ah in the old testament. It means "offence".
In medieval times, people had target competitions with bullseye targets. We've all seen them. It's usually round with dot in the center, then usually one or two circles around the dot.
If you missed the bullseye (the dot in the center) with your arrow someone would yell out "sin". Sin meant "missing the mark".

The Bible speaks quite a bit about morals. There are literally over a thousand verses in the Bible about morals.
The 10 commandments are good delineator. Don't lie, don't cheat, don't kill, don't steal, don't have illicit sex, don't worship other gods or idols, honor your parents....
we all know the list. In fact the Bible says this is "written on our hearts". ( Rom 2:15; )

We all know when something we are doing is wrong. What is the opposite of a "moral" person? An "immoral" person. A person with no morals, or bad morals.
After eating the fruit from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.. Adam and Eve became aware of "good and evil". The suddenly realized walking around
in the garden without clothes on was sin. God even asked them "who told you that you were naked"? The answer was, no one told us... we just "knew".

There is quite a bit of debate here on TalkJesus quite frequently about being under the law or not. For the purpose of this thread it doesn't really matter that much.
Other than to say... non-Christians are still under the law.

But whether Christians are under the law or not... we are still expected to have good morals. This does not appear to be optional. We all know the verses.
Some argue I am not under the law, I can do anything. I can kill, steal, fornicate, and lie... hey Jesus has my back. But is that really true?

I'm not talking about past sins here. If you have done these things in your past, before you got saved. You are forgiven. No argument there.
I'm not even saying we have to be "perfect" now that we are saved. But we do have to be moral people, it is a requirement.

The Bible says certain people will not enter "the kingdom of God".

1 Cor 6:9; Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived; neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor homosexuals,
1 Cor 6:10; nor thieves, nor the covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers, will inherit the kingdom of God.

Eph 5:3; But immorality or any impurity or greed must not even be named among you, as is proper among saints;
Eph 5:4; and there must be no filthiness and silly talk, or coarse jesting, which are not fitting, but rather giving of thanks.
Eph 5:5; For this you know with certainty, that no immoral or impure person or covetous man, who is an idolater, has an inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God.
Eph 5:6; Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience.

I notice both of these passages above have a warning about being deceived. It seems many "Christians" are deceived these days.

Gal 5:19; Now the deeds of the flesh are evident, which are: immorality, impurity, sensuality,
Gal 5:20; idolatry, sorcery, enmities, strife, jealousy, outbursts of anger, disputes, dissensions, factions,
Gal 5:21; envying, drunkenness, carousing, and things like these, of which I forewarn you, just as I have forewarned you, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.

None of these passage have a caveat or and exclusion attached to them. None of these passages say.. "unless you are a Christian". The plain and simple truth is... if you are an
immoral person, your eternity is in jeopardy.

Rev 22:14; Blessed are those who wash their robes, so that they may have the right to the tree of life, and may enter by the gates into the city. (the New Jerusalem)
Rev 22:15; Outside are the dogs and the sorcerers and the immoral persons and the murderers and the idolaters, and everyone who loves and practices lying.

Rev 21:7; "He who overcomes will inherit these things, and I will be his God and he will be My son.
Rev 21:8; "But for the cowardly and unbelieving and abominable and murderers and immoral persons and sorcerers and idolaters and all liars, their part will be in the lake that burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death."

Heb 12:15; See to it that no one comes short of the grace of God; that no root of bitterness springing up causes trouble, and by it many be defiled;
Heb 12:16; that there be no immoral or godless person like Esau, who sold his own birthright for a single meal.

1 Tim 1:8; But we know that the Law is good, if one uses it lawfully,
1 Tim 1:9; realizing the fact that law is not made for a righteous person, but for those who are lawless and rebellious, for the ungodly and sinners, for the unholy and profane, for those who kill their fathers or mothers, for murderers
1 Tim 1:10; and immoral men and homosexuals and kidnappers and liars and perjurers, and whatever else is contrary to sound teaching,

1 Cor 5:11; But actually, I wrote to you not to associate with any so-called brother if he is an immoral person, or covetous, or an idolater, or a reviler, or a drunkard, or a swindler—not even to eat with such a one.

..."well, OK... then how sinful am I allowed to be?" -- if you are asking this question in your heart... I wonder where your heart really is.

Matt 12:34; "You brood of vipers, how can you, being evil, speak what is good? For the mouth speaks out of that which fills the heart.

Matt 15:8; 'THIS PEOPLE HONORS ME WITH THEIR LIPS, BUT THEIR HEART IS FAR AWAY FROM ME.
Matt 15:18; "But the things that proceed out of the mouth come from the heart, and those defile the man.
Matt 15:19; "For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, slander

Our morals and the way we live matters, it affects where we will spend eternity. Let no one deceive you.

Luke 6:45; "
The good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth what is good; and the evil man out of the evil treasure brings forth what is evil; for his mouth speaks from that which fills his heart.

Matt 7:17; "So every good tree bears good fruit, but the bad tree bears bad fruit.
Matt 7:18; "A good tree cannot produce bad fruit, nor can a bad tree produce good fruit.

... "but I'm a good tree, with good fruit!" are you? Are you really? Are you still struggling with pornography everyday? Are you still getting drunk and stoned everyday?
Are you still living in fornication, adultery or homosexuality everyday? Are you still doing all the same sinful things you did before you got saved?

Rom 6:16; Do you not know that when you present yourselves to someone as slaves for obedience, you are slaves of the one whom you obey, either of sin resulting in death, or of obedience resulting in righteousness?

We are supposed to be the salt and the light to a dying world. But too many "Christians" are still living in darkness and sin. ... and many churches are telling them.. "it doesn't matter".

John 5:28; "Do not marvel at this; for an hour is coming, in which all who are in the tombs will hear His voice,
John 5:29; and will come forth; those who did the good deeds to a resurrection of life, those who committed the evil deeds to a resurrection of judgment.

well, OK... then how sinful am I allowed to be?" -- if you are asking this question in your heart... I wonder where your heart really is.

this reminds me of when I tell my friends the bible says drunkards will not inherit the kingdom of God, the first thing they want to do is get a definition of a drunkard, seems they want to push the envelope. I was a drunkard at one time, heading straight to hell, but I had no clue, hey I was a nice guy I could not be headed straight to hell, I was blinded by my sin. The word tells us sin blinds us to the truth, so even when we point the truth out to a sinners the sin blinds them is my understanding and that is something only spiritual eyes can see

Yes, we Can be blinded by our own sins. God's Word Is convicting -- part of the role of the Holy Spirit is convicting as we're reading it. Or why some won't go to church. Because they don't like to feel the convicting Of the Holy Spirit.
It can take someone else's comment to wake us up. Or maybe getting into trouble as a result Of.

And, often times, the drinking and the drugs are signs of bigger problems in a person's life. Covering inner pain.

And satan is very good at giving us plenty of ways / opportunities To mess up our lives. The last thing he wants are soul-winning Christians.
