Love Leads to Obedience

The LORD preserves all who love Him, But all the wicked He will destroy. Psalm 145:20

Commentators point out that Psalm 145 is one of the "alphabetical psalms" in which each verse (except one, in this case) starts with a Hebrew letter and is ordered alphabetically. This is believed to have been done to aid children so they could memorize and sing it, planting the truth of God deep in their hearts.

As they would have reached today's verse, Hebrews would have known the importance of loving God. And they would have known that loving God is more than mere lip service. Love leads to obedience, 2 John 6 says, "This is love, that we walk according to His commandments. This is the commandment, that as you have heard from the beginning, you should walk in it."

And in Luke 6:46 (NIV), Jesus asks a large group of His disciples, "Why do you call me, 'Lord, Lord,' and do not do what I say?" You cannot separate love for God and obedience to Him. Take inventory of your life, comparing your actions to the commands of God. You will never obey Him perfectly, but your desire to obey should be evident.

Prayer: Lord, I know I fall short of Your commands every day. The closer I examine my heart, the more disobedience I see. But my ultimate desire is to obey You.
