Is smoking Tobacco a sin

Member
How can you know drinking lots of alcohol or even smoking a cigarette on a daily basis is a sin? That's easy to find out! Does becoming drunk or smoking get you closer to God than not dealing with such things? The only acceptable answer is they are sins because they make you stay away from Him and can even kill you by causing serious illnesses that at some point might not be treatable in any hospital any longer. Saying that such stuff is not a problem or you can't lose salvation because you just keep drinking a lot or smoking n amount of cigarettes, is a clear defiance of His Will that is no better than looking for hookers anywhere to do you know what. The very attempt of justifying addictions demonstrates that you either shamelessly ignore the Holy Spirit's warnings or you never repented from your sins but just pretended you did. Sometimes this kind of weird behavior is a consequence of listening to the world's teachings that tell you everything is allowed, everything leads you to a better place. We should keep in mind how blind human flesh is spiritually. Why did I say you could lose your salvation? Salvation is eternal, but the Lord was clear that we should work hard to stay fir in faith till he comes. If you don't care about smoking and He comes to take His Church to the sky or Heaven, why would He take the active smoker or drunkard that didn't obey Him there? To watch you look for a way to replace it with any other addiction? (I know, those already possessing a glorified body won't feel the need to sin, but my point here is that He wouldn't transform someone that still needs to learn a lot from the Gospel, the epistles, the prophets and even Revelations.) Most likely He would prefer to leave the smoker and the drunkard in the world as a last attempt to make him or her repent from their sins after witnessing His Wrath during the Tribulation.

That's why I encourage you smokers and drunkards, no matter if that sounds harsh, to treat such stuff as some of the worst sins from your own perspective so you do get a chance to listen to the Lord, repent from them, let His Holy Spirit guide you and strengthen you in times of need. Say it's just as bad as other stuff as eating a few candies, and He will punish you by hardening your heart making it more difficult for you to repent. Why should they be the worst sins for you? Because those are the sins that can make you leave the Lord behind and love the world, which is the enemy of the Lord. Anyone who loves the world, doesn't know Him or wants to become an anathema despite of having listening to the Gospel.

What verse in the Bible says smoking cigarettes is a sin?

I would have no problem smoking a cigarette in front of the Lord. It's legal, and until smoking cigarettes is against the law, I have no problem with it.
Then you disobey God and you're currently not a believer. Why? Because you think YOU know better than God Himself what's good for you but He tells us you don't for He knows that humans only think evil stuff continually. If He comes back and you dare to smoke anything in front of Him, then you won't stay alive. For He is Holy the Lord won't accept your excuse of not finding a specific law to stop smoking right away. He already summed up the Law by leaving us His 2 Commandments, and you're not even loving self! Plus why should a human temple of God ever be filled with that filthy smoke of a cigarette?

This is the time for you to repent from thinking of smoking and defending smoking as something "legal" and ask the Lord for His Divine Forgiveness!

Living in New York and breathing the air there is equivalent to smoking a pack per day, are you suggesting that the people who live there are sinning (China's even worse)? OK, maybe it's not their choice, but what about the GMO food that you're eating that's been known to kill animals, do you buy and eat only organic? Do you eat processed meat? That's a sin! Do you drink soda pop? That's a sin, but it's more socially acceptable to drink a soda than it is to smoke. The Lord has never had a problem with me smoking and has never brought it to my attention. If it was going to harm me, I'm sure He would've said something.

Greetings @SleepyEdwin @exsurfbum

Reading the last two posts it would appear you are both extreme opposites in your views.

@exsurfbum
Firstly, smoking is damaging to the body and it is addictive (an idol).
An individual makes a choice to smoke.
Most defensive smokers I've met or encountered on this forum will bring up the "air pollution" and "GMO foods" arguments.
Some people do not have much choice where they live.
I agree that Christians should not fill their tummies with junk food and that it would be hypocritical for a Christian to make a judgement on another if they too are harming their bodies.

However, that does not negate the fact that smoking is a habitual idol that causes poor health and disease. As a health care professional I have seen first hand the devastating effects of smoking on individuals and their families.

You need to seek the Lord and His direction...whilst you are smoking He does not want to share HIS throne with an idol.

@SleepyEdwin

Yes in agreement with you that smoking is a sin.
It is not glorifying to the Lord

However, your judgemental attitude lacks the love and compassion of a true believer.

Yes, Christians should never candy coat sin.....but waving a big judgemental stick is not going to turn hearts.

There are true Christians who smoke, their salvation will not be lost by smoking......but they are not basking in the full joy of salvation. They are in bondage....they need prayer, support and sound counsel.

Give your messages with Christian love and take time to pray.

Closing thread temporarily for a short period of reflection and prayer.......trusting and knowing that the Lord will lead.

Greetings everyone

I am reopening this thread.

Please make sure that responses are backed by Bible Verses

Post in love and peace. If anyone is disrespectful or rude to another .member then you will be removed from the thread.

I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.
And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

This is true. But....God is just as concerned with our bodies as He is our spirit. Isn't He? Doesn't the 'spiritual warfare' involve our bodies. I believe it does. The world, the flesh and the devil. God wars from the inside, spirit first, to the outside, body last. satan wars from the body first, to the inner spirit last.

Our bodies do then become very much a part of the spiritual warfare. I say this as one who fails miserably in this, yet I recognize the truth of it. The more we can bring the body under subjection for God, the more we have defeated satan, and stopped his assaults to our inner perimeter. It is a never ending struggle here.

Then you disobey God and you're currently not a believer.

Who is, and who is not a believer is not for you, or anyone else on this forum to declare. To make a judgement like this is to assume a role way beyond your authority.

i am a light smoker who was born again 2 years ago I have aspergers and have tried to quit I wondered am I going to go to hell if I don't quit also any advice is good
You're not going to Hell for smoking. However, you likely will end up in the hospital with cancer eventually. Cancer is the second-most-common cause of death in the United States, after heart disease.
And smoking also causes heart disease. So you're flirting with a double-barrel of trouble and certain death.

1 Corinthians 6:19-20
Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.

Furthermore, smoking only destroys your body. There is no benefit at all.

Commercial stop smoking products are a risk as well. Go Holistic if you want to stop smoking. Herbs, Homeopathy.
Nicotine patches deposit nicotine through the dermal layer of your skin. Everything absorbed through the skin enters the blood stream so that's not healthy either. But, in efforts to quit smoking the smoker still gets that nicotine fix in the process of not actually taking a drag off a cigarette. It is still unhealthy. And tobacco companies are behind the stop-smoking product manufacture too. Same with those silly dangerous nicotine stop smoking gum products.
As you chew the gum your saliva starts the digestive process to begin in your stomach. Meanwhile, the release of the nicotine in the gum occurs and is absorbed into your blood stream through that large gray vein under your tongue. Lift your tongue and you'll see it stand out above all else there. This is how Sublingual, from the Latin meaning, "under the tongue", supplements work. They absorb through that vein. Anything you put in your mouth activates the saliva process and that absorption process.

Best solution? STOP! Health food stores have Homeopathic remedies to help you stop smoking. And they work. I gave a box to a friend so they could stop after they asked for a remedy. That was thirty years ago and after they stopped they never picked up a cigarette again.

When you smoke you're drawing tar, nicotine, and cancer causing materials into the raw tissues of your mouth, esophagus (throat) and lungs. And when you exhale the smoke you're risking the life and health of everyone around you. Because cigarette smoke contains carbon monoxide. That nasty lethal vapor chemical that is expelled from our car exhausts.

You're a temple of God! Would you throw garbage on the floor of a church ? Of defecate in the aisles? Of course not. When you smoke, you as that temple, are contaminating the temple where the Holy Spirit that is God dwells.
How can we love God when we pollute ourselves?

Smoking will not affect your salvation

But It must grieve the Lord's heart to see His children actively and willingly cause harm to their bodies continually.

Also anything that is habit forming and addictive makes a person a slave to the addiction.

As a healthcare professional I see the effects of smoking physically and mentally.
It is not a pretty sight.

The dearest idol I have known,
Whate’er that idol be
Help me to tear it from Thy throne,
And worship only Thee*

*William Cowper 18th century hymn
Alcohol is way worse but is glorified.... No OF COURSE smoking is not a sin it was around In Egyptian and Roman times when the bible was written and not one single word of it is mentioned in the bible.... how arrogant some men are to dare put words into the mouth of God! He's watching you!

Sins are clearly marked.. And even if you commit murder should you ask the lord for repentance with a true heart condition.. that you are truly sorry and fully upset that you committed this vile act... the lord shall forgive you... because he loves you more than you will ever know.... he won't ever ask you to repent for having a cigarette.... so no smoking is not never was nor ever will be a sin.

Hi Disney fan, If you were accepted by Jesus as smoker, then obviously smoking was not an issue with him. Even though some of your brothers seem to have a problem with it. We are told to praise God in all things. Maybe you should praise God for accepting you even though you smoke, let him know you hate it, ask him to release you from it's grip, and then wait patiently for your deliverance, praying regularly for it. In the meantime, enjoy your smoke and feel no guilt, that comes from Satan. Scripture tells us, there is now no condemnation for those in Christ Jesus. Bless you. Just to let you know, I waited 20 years, but he delivered me, and I didn't give it up. The desire left me. I was 52 when I was set free, I am now 78. Praise the name of Jesus.

The most important thing to consider, I believe is, did you do something you now question before you came to the Lord?

If you did, and that is what you are saying here, then God accepts us 'as we are' - 'as we were' at the point of being born again.

I agree with what has been said so far...

It's true we aren't suppose to do anything to hurt our bodies. 1 Cor 3:16-17; 1 Cor 6:18-20;

The defining point is the second you are born again, prior to that you may have been a smoker, a druggy, an excessive drinker, an adulterer, a thief, etc. But God called you out of those things, He takes you as you are and starts His work by the Holy Spirit to make you better, he removes the heart of stone and creates a new heart in you, hence the reason you are now asking questions. Praise the Lord.

So all the things that are not right in God's eyes He wants you to change by practicing righteousness, not wanting to and avoiding sin.

Now if you had started smoking after being born again, then that is another issue. But you haven't.

So be strong and of good faith and pray, we join you in prayer my friend, pray for forgiveness and pray for strength to 'overcome' the addictive habit.

Seek advice as well, God will see you are really trying.

Bless you

Jesus loves you we do too.
