What IS this power

Member
John 1:12 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:

What is this power and what does it do? In part, it is the power to mortify the flesh.

I cross reference above scripture with Rom 8:13-14 For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live. For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.

So the power to kill the flesh and the deeds of it allows you to be filled with the Spirit which will lead you. Those ARE the sons of God. First comes the power then comes the Spirit. Remove flesh replace with Spirit!

edification welcome please.

Christian Gnosticism is an early heresy which emphasized the spirit as a positive and flesh or matter as negative.

And Elohim saw every thing that (he) had made, and, behold, it was very good. And the evening and the morning were the sixth day.
Genesis 1:31

Hey Tristan...The word "power' here simply translates to "authority" " But as many as received him, to them gave he authority to become the sons of God,

Theo....I'm really not sure where you're coming from here. You seem to be quite interested in the Bible but I do wonder if you've ever met the Holy Spirit? He's the teacher...not our intellect.

To become isn't a guarantee, does that make sense Bendito?

So I am trying to understand the difference between having the ability to become vs actually being a son of God. What makes the difference? Maybe I just need to focus on being led by the Spirit, lol.

Rereading the NLT version kind of helped me put it together a bit better.

How do you distinguish between Ruach Elohim (Genesis 1:2) and Ruach haQodesh (Psalms 51:11)?

Power here is not ability,,Its authority.... Thosw who will receive him receive the authority to become....and they become by trusting Him.

No, qodesh means set-apart. Something can't the the same as what it is set-apart from.
ruach elohim means quite literally 'the bbreath of God' Ruach HaKodesh is a name of God....The Holy Spirit They are one and the same.

Ruach means spirit or breath. Ruach haQodesh is not the name of Elohim, the name of Elohim is "I AM".

If the two were the same then it would mean nothing to be holy.

I'm getting tired of this intellectualizing the Word, Theo......Do you know the Holy Spirit? Really?

The Greek word translated as "Word" is logos, which can mean reason. "Holy Spirit" means nothing if holy means nothing. Holy means set-apart, so for "Holy Spirit" to have meaning there must be spirit which is not set-apart.

Now therefore, behold, YHWH hath put a lying spirit in the mouth of all these thy prophets, and YHWH hath spoken evil concerning thee.
1 Kings 22:23

Of course!

John 1:12

12 But to as many as did receive him, to those who put their trust in his person and authority, he gave the right to become children of God,

Romans 8:14 All who are led by God’s Spirit are God’s sons. (He can't lead you if you won't trust Him)

There are two....Here are a another, to show that You ARE a son of God.

1 John 3:1-2

3 See what love the Father has lavished on us in letting us be called God’s children! For that is what we are. The reason the world does not know us is that it has not known him. 2 Dear friends, we are God’s children now; and it has not yet been made clear what we will become. We do know that when he appears, we will be like him; because we will see him as he really is.

Now my friend....You dig in and see what the Bood says about you having a heavenly father. and go from there.

Theo...Do you KNOW the Holy Spirit? And the other question you seem to refuse to answer....Which original sin?
