Wednesday, September 6, 2017, 5:00 a.m. – The Lord Jesus put in mind the song “My Jesus, I Love Thee.” Speak, Lord, your words to my heart. I read John 14 (Select vv. ESV).

Another Helper (vv. 15-17)

“If you love me, you will keep my commandments. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you.”

Jesus Christ, the Son of God, the second person of our triune God – Father, Son and Holy Spirit – was celebrating the Feast of the Passover with his disciples when he spoke these words to them. Satan had already put it into Judas’ heart to betray Jesus, and so Jesus told his disciples that one of them was going to betray him. Then, Jesus told his disciples that he was soon to leave them, and that they could not go with him then, but that they would follow afterward. But, then he comforted them with the knowledge that he was going to prepare a place for them, and that he would come again to take them to be with him. And, that comfort is for all of us who know him.

When Jesus spoke these words to his disciples, the Holy Spirit was present with them, but he was not living in them. The Holy Spirit came to dwell within the followers of Christ after Jesus Christ was crucified on a cross for our sins, buried, resurrected from the dead, and ascended back to heaven to be with the Father. Now, when we believe in Jesus Christ to be Lord and Savior of our lives, the Holy Spirit of God comes to live within us, to empower us to live godly and holy lives, and to teach, counsel, guide, correct, reprove, encourage and strengthen us in the faith. Yet, he does not dwell in all who merely profess faith in Jesus Christ, but in those who were crucified with Christ in death to sin, and who have been resurrected with him to newness of life, created to be like him in true righteousness and holiness.

If We Love Him (vv. 18-24)

“I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you. Yet a little while and the world will see me no more, but you will see me. Because I live, you also will live. In that day you will know that I am in my Father, and you in me, and I in you. Whoever has my commandments and keeps them, he it is who loves me. And he who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and manifest myself to him.” Judas (not Iscariot) said to him, “Lord, how is it that you will manifest yourself to us, and not to the world?” Jesus answered him, “If anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him. Whoever does not love me does not keep my words. And the word that you hear is not mine but the Father's who sent me.”

When Jesus left this earth, shortly afterwards he sent his Holy Spirit to indwell all of his followers. When we believe in Jesus Christ, we are birthed of the Spirit of God, and the life of God now dwells within us and gives us new life in Him. Because the Spirit of God and Jesus Christ and the Father are one God, it is God living within us; it is Jesus Christ, in the person of his Spirit, living within us, and we, as Christ’s followers, are his body. He now lives out his life through us on this earth. And, we are his representatives. Because Jesus Christ lives, we now live and walk in the Spirit of God.

Yet, it is not enough to merely profess faith in Christ, or to pray a prayer to receive Christ, or to acknowledge Jesus’ existence or what he did for us in dying on a cross for our sins. We must walk (in lifestyle) in obedience to our Lord, not in absolute sinless perfection (See: 1 Jn. 2:1-2), but according to the Spirit of God and no longer in accord with our sinful flesh. This is love for God, to keep his commands. If we say we love him, or that we believe in him, but we do not do what he says, we are liars. If we are persisting in living sinful lifestyles (in practicing sin), we do not know God, and we do not have the hope of eternal life with God or of Jesus taking us to be with him when he does come back one day (See: Lu. 9:23-25; Ro. 8:1-17; 1 Jn. 1:6).

Peace from God (vv. 25-31)

“These things I have spoken to you while I am still with you. But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you. Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid. You heard me say to you, ‘I am going away, and I will come to you.’ If you loved me, you would have rejoiced, because I am going to the Father, for the Father is greater than I. And now I have told you before it takes place, so that when it does take place you may believe. I will no longer talk much with you, for the ruler of this world is coming. He has no claim on me, but I do as the Father has commanded me, so that the world may know that I love the Father. Rise, let us go from here.”

If we are genuinely in Christ Jesus, through faith in him, we have God, in the person of the Holy Spirit, now living within us, teaching us all things, and empowering us to live godly and holy lives. So, if we continue living in rebellion against God in addiction to sin, we do so because we are choosing to disobey God and to go our own way, for he has made the way for us to come out from under slavery to sin, if we will just take what he has given us and apply it to our lives. God makes no provision for sin, nor does he allow excuses for sin against him. He is merciful, and he will forgive us our sins, if we are repentant, but if we continue on a sinful course, and yet claim to have fellowship with him, or to love him, or to know him, then we are mistaken and misguided (See: Gal. 5:19-21; Eph. 5:3-6; Ro. 8:1-17).

When we trust in Jesus Christ to be Lord and Savior of our lives, we have peace with God, but not peace as the world gives. The world is looking for absence of conflict among all people via compromise of faith and conviction and acceptance of all religions as viable and tolerance of sinful lifestyles. But, Jesus said he didn’t come to bring peace, but a sword, and to turn even family members against one another. What he meant by that is that he didn’t come to bring peace as the world defines peace, for if we follow him in obedience and surrender to his will, we will be in conflict with the world of sin, and the world will hate us because we have come out from the world.

The peace Jesus gives us is peace with God in that we are no longer in enmity towards God when we submit to his Lordship over our lives and trust him to deliver us out of slavery (addiction) to sin, because of what Jesus did for us in dying for our sins. For, Jesus died that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. He died that we might no longer live for ourselves, but for him who gave his life up for us. He as crucified on a cross in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us who walk no longer after the flesh, but according to the Spirit. And, He “gave himself for us to redeem us from all lawlessness and to purify for himself a people for his own possession who are zealous for good works” (Tit. 2:14; 1 Pet. 2:24; 2 Co. 5:15, 21; Ro. 6:1-23; Ro. 8:1-17; Eph. 4:17-24).

Jesus told his disciples that the “ruler of this world is coming,” but that he had no claim on Jesus, for Jesus did as the Father had commanded him. And, that is why Satan (the ruler of this world) hated him, because he obeyed the Father, and that is why he hates us too, when we do the Father’s will, who is in heaven. And, Satan did come after Jesus, to have him arrested and then hung on a cross to die. But, it was God’s will that Jesus should suffer and die for our sins, and then to be resurrected back to life, so that we might be delivered out of Satan’s stronghold, and no longer be under his control. So, Satan was not the victor in this, for he was conquered through Jesus’ death and resurrection, and on our behalf, so that we might be free from slavery to sin and be bondservants of Christ and of his righteousness, and all for the glory and praise of our God. Amen!

My Jesus, I Love Thee
William R. Featherstone / Adoniram J. Gordon

My Jesus, I love thee, I know thou art mine;
For thee all the follies of sin I resign.
My gracious Redeemer, my Savior art thou;
If ever I loved thee, my Jesus, 'tis now.

I love thee because thou hast first loved me,
And purchased my pardon on Calvary's tree;
I love thee for wearing the thorns on thy brow;
If ever I loved thee, my Jesus, 'tis now.

I’ll love Thee in life, I will love Thee in death,
And praise Thee as long as Thou lendest me breath;
And say, when the death-dew lies cold on my brow,
If ever I loved Thee, my Jesus, ‘tis now.

In mansions of glory and endless delight;
I'll ever adore thee in heaven so bright;
I'll sing with the glittering crown on my brow;
If ever I loved thee, my Jesus, 'tis now.

He comes to us through baptism.

That is when we die to self and are raised in Christ. So again, repent and be baptised if you havent done so. To obey Him in this area is important...its a commandment!

Everyone asks what shall we do? Do we say a prayer, do we declare a belief? Do we join a church. Do we tithe?

Peter gives instruction...being a christian is a gift we receive, but how?? What do we actually DO?

See Acts 2:37-41

It seems many evangelists and churches are not even bothering to tell people about repentance and baptism these days.

You do not need to be baptized with water in order to be saved or to receive the Holy Spirit.

Water baptism is an outward symbol of an inward Faith. The water is not what saves us. Being baptized with water is a testimony to what has already taken place in our hearts, which is death with Christ to sin and resurrection to new life in Christ of the Spirit of God. We are circumcised of the heart, not of the flesh. When we believe in Jesus to be our Savior, we are baptized with the Spirit, which is a spiritual baptism, not a physical one, i.e. we are born again and the Spirit comes to live within us. And, then we follow with water baptism which is our outward identification with Christ and a testimony of what took place in our hearts when we believed.

I am a believer in the Trinitarian (Father, Son and Holy Spirit) God. But although I believe they are all God, I don't believe they are a single personality.
I believe they are distinct and unique.

There are verses that says "the Spirit" of Christ dwells in us. (Is Jesus a Spirit?). There are many more verses that say the "Holy Spirit" dwells within us.

Colossians 1:27 is another one: "Christ in you, the hope of glory." We are his temple; his body.

@B-A-C - here are some verses which say that Christ lives in us, God the Father lives in us, and we also know the Holy Spirit lives in us. God is Father, Son and Holy Spirit. He dwells within those of us who have trusted in Jesus Christ to be Lord and Savior of our lives. He lives within us by his Spirit, not in bodily form.

Christ In You

But if Christ is in you, although the body is dead because of sin, the Spirit is life because of righteousness. Ro. 8:10

But when God, who had set me apart even from my mother's womb and called me through His grace, was pleased to reveal His Son in me so that I might preach Him among the Gentiles… Gal. 1:15-16

I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. Gal. 2:20

For this reason I bow my knees before the Father, from whom every family in heaven and on earth derives its name, that He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with power through His Spirit in the inner man, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; and that you, being rooted and grounded in love… Eph. 3:14-17

…to whom God willed to make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory. Col. 1:27

God Living In You

…in whom you also are being built together into a dwelling of God in the Spirit. Eph. 2:22

…but Christ was faithful as a Son over His house--whose house we are, if we hold fast our confidence and the boast of our hope firm until the end. Heb. 3:6

Jesus answered and said to him, "If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our abode with him. Jn. 14:23

Do you not know that you are a temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you? 1 Co. 3:16

So for the sake of semantics.. do three separate spirits dwell in us?

Jas 4:5; Or do you think that the Scripture speaks to no purpose: "He jealously desires the Spirit which He has made to dwell in us"?
2 Tim 1:14; Guard, through the Holy Spirit who dwells in us, the treasure which has been entrusted to you.

Is....

1 Cor 3:16; Do you not know that you are a temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you?

Is the Spirit of God also the Holy Spirit or another separate spirit?

Rom 8:11; But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you.

Is the "Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead" the Holy Spirit.. or another spirit?

The Bible says God lives in us, it says the Father dwells within us, it says the Holy Spirit lives within us, and it says Christ lives within us. God is Father, Son and Holy Spirit, 3 in 1, and he lives within us, and that is really the point, that our holy God chose to make his home in our hearts, and because he lives within us we now live in his power and strength and we are able to be free from the control of sin and now be under the control of his righteousness. Amen! We should not get so caught up in semantics that we lose sight of the real meaning of the message of us being the temple of God, the body of Christ, and Him dwelling within our lives so that his life can now be lived out through us.

I didnt say you need to be water baptised in order to be saved.

I said the bible says Jesus commands us to repent and be baptised. Stop confusing the issue.

I have been crucified with christ...

When are we crucified with christ? When we undergo baptism...which is burial of our sins. See romans.

And yet not I, nevertheless the life i live in the flesh I live by faith in the son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.

When does a christians new life begin? When they repent and are baptised.

this is a very basic command that Jesus gave his disciples to do. To dismiss baptism is very strange to me. Sorry, if Jesus did it, we must too. Even John said who am I to baptise you? But Jesus was obeying his Father.

You can exhort people to believe but unless they put action to their faith..the spiritual life is not going to happen! Its like expecting a seed to grow when you dont plant it and give it any water!

Hmm I wonder why nothings growing? Uh...did you water? Did you even plant them in the ground?

Greetings ladies @Sue J Love @Lanolin

This thread is getting a little touchy and need not.

I am not getting into a lengthy Biblical discussion here

The Bible speaks for itself.....

For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
John 3:16

And the eunuch answered Philip, and said, I pray thee, of whom speaketh the prophet this? of Himself, or of some other man? Then Philip opened his mouth, and began at the same scripture, and preached unto him Jesus. And as they went on their way, they came unto a certain water: and the eunuch said, See, here is water; what doth hinder me to be baptized? And Philip said, If thou believest with all thine heart, thou mayest. And he answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God. And he commanded the chariot to stand still: and they went down both into the water, both Philip and the eunuch; and he baptized him.And when they were come up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord caught away Philip, that the eunuch saw him no more: and he went on his way rejoicing

Water Baptism
Baptism in Water

Also, water baptism is act of obedience solely. It is not required for salvation. One proof is the thief on the Cross. He was not baptized, yet look what Jesus said.

Luke 23:32-43
32 Two others, both criminals, were led out to be executed with him. 33 When they came to a place called The Skull," they nailed him to the cross. And the criminals were also crucified—one on his right and one on his left.

34 Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they don’t know what they are doing.” And the soldiers gambled for his clothes by throwing dice."

35 The crowd watched and the leaders scoffed. “He saved others,” they said, “let him save himself if he is really God’s Messiah, the Chosen One.” 36 The soldiers mocked him, too, by offering him a drink of sour wine. 37 They called out to him, “If you are the King of the Jews, save yourself!” 38 A sign was fastened above him with these words: “This is the King of the Jews.”

39 One of the criminals hanging beside him scoffed, “So you’re the Messiah, are you? Prove it by saving yourself—and us, too, while you’re at it!”

40 But the other criminal protested, “Don’t you fear God even when you have been sentenced to die? 41 We deserve to die for our crimes, but this man hasn’t done anything wrong.” 42 Then he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your Kingdom.”

43 And Jesus replied, “I assure you, today you will be with me in paradise.”

Sometimes it can be hard to comprehend, much less believe. For we can be so wretched at times.
Yet, it is true if we believe and He resides in us!

Just adding a few verses prior to your opening one.

"If you had known Me, you would have known My Father also; and from now on you know Him and have seen Him." Philip said to Him, "Lord, show us the Father, and it is sufficient for us." Jesus said to him, "Have I been with you so long, and yet you have not known Me, Philip? He who has seen Me has seen the Father; so how can you say, 'Show us the Father'? "Do you not believe that I am in the Father, and the Father in Me? The words that I speak to you I do not speak on My own [authority]; but the Father who dwells in Me does the works. "Believe Me that I [am] in the Father and the Father in Me, or else believe Me for the sake of the works themselves
. John 14:7-11

Which is just reiterated in the verses you used in your opening Sister, with the inclusion that can be seen throughout the NT.

"the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you. "I will not leave you orphans; I will come to you. "A little while longer and the world will see Me no more, but you will see Me. Because I live, you will live also. "At that day you will know that I [am] in My Father, and you in Me, and I in you. 14:17-20

I can agree BAC that there are three personalities, but still there is only One Spirit and all in agreement.

This is He who came by water and blood--Jesus Christ; not only by water, but by water and blood. And it is the Spirit who bears witness, because the Spirit is truth. For there are three that bear witness in heaven: the Father, the Word, and the Holy Spirit; and these three are one. And there are three that bear witness on earth: the Spirit, the water, and the blood; and these three agree as one. 1 John 5:6-8

Always with the Love of Christ Jesus.

I can agree BAC that there are three personalities, but still there is only One Spirit and all in agreement.

1 Cor 12:13; For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free, and we were all made to drink of one Spirit.
Eph 2:18; for through Him we both have our access in one Spirit to the Father.
Eph 4:4; There is one body and one Spirit, just as also you were called in one hope of your calling;
Eph 4:5; one Lord, one faith, one baptism,
Eph 4:6; one God and Father of all who is over all and through all and in all.
1 Cor 12:4; Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit.

I find it interesting that all the verses that that talking about being filled with "the Spirit" never say.. be filled with "the spirits" (plural). Eph 5:18;
The verses that talk about the fruit of the Spirit, never say... the fruit of "the spirits" (plural) Gal 5:22;
And yet other verses say walk by the Spirit, or be led by the Spirit... none say "spirit(s)." Gal 5:16; Gal 5:25;

It's been my experience that most non-pentecostals are more prone to say "I have Jesus living in my heart".
But you hardly ever hear they say "I have the Holy Spirit dwelling in me". I doubt this is conscious thing. It's just the language you hear
in specific churches.

On the other hand, pentecostals may be just as bad... you are much more prone to hear them say "I have the Holy Spirit in me".
I wonder why this is?
