Repentance - revisited.

Repentance - means to quit doing something. It actually means do the opposite of what you were doing before. Go the opposite way. Do a 180 degree turn from what you were doing.

The funny thing about repentance... no one else can repent for you.
Jesus can forgive you IF you repent, God can cleanse you IF you repent, the Holy Spirit can save you IF you
repent. But none of those persons repent for you.

Of course Jesus preached repentance - Matt 4:17; Mark 1:15; Luke 13:3; Luke 13:5;
John the baptist preached repentance - Matt 3:2;
The disciples preached repentance - Mark 6:12;

Jesus went so far as to denounce the people who did not repent - Matt 11:20;

Peter said - Repent (and be baptized in Jesus name) for the forgiveness of sins. ( Acts 2:38; )
Without repentance, there
is no forgiveness. ( Heb 10:26; )

Peter says "repent" - so that your sins may be forgiven (Acts 3:19; )

God Himself "declares to ALL men everywhere should repent". ( Acts 17:30; Rev 3:19; )

Repentance isn't just for the Jews, even Gentiles have to repent ( Acts 26:20; )

Repentance for the forgiveness of sins should be proclaimed to ALL nations, not just the Jews ( Luke 24:47; )

The Lord wishes ALL men to come to repentance ( 2 Pet 3:9; )

Repentance isn't a suggestion, it's a requirement. Without repentance there is no salvation. ( Luke 13:3; Luke 13:5; )
This doesn't mean we will automatically stop doing any at all. ( Prov 24:16; )
But it does mean we need to strive ( Luke Luke 13:24; 1 Tim 4:10; ) not to.

Repentance isn't usually a one time thing. In fact, if you find yourself doing the same sins
over and over again, you haven't really repented yet.

No repentance is not a one time thing and neither is salvation. As we walk with God [if we do] we need to repent of many things. Only really once on each wrong way is needed, but at least once on each wrong way is necessary. Once a change in us as a result of a real repentance [ @B-A-C as our brother has already stated] has been accomplished then have we not saved as a result of not longer of following our old way? ["For the wages of sin is death;..." Rom 6:23.] This really killing the "old man" [Eph. 4:22], isn't it?

Elsewhere recently on this forum someone asked what salvation is. This is what brings it us: Repentance. Jesus paid the price making it possible for us to really repent and be saved, but it really does it not need to be done for each thing that stands between us and a closer walk with God?

(2 I am being saved.
(3 I will be saved.

Number one is true for every believer.

Number two is the ongoing thing... or should be... that also makes number three a possibility for the 'after a whiles' or for 'the tomorrows' if we have such future opportunities left in this flesh.

Php 1:6 And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.

Repentance we think is something we do once in a while or as needed. This is not true!!! Repentance is something we do constantly 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Repentance means "to change your mind". We can not stop doing things that are wrong until we first change what we are thinking, because what we think is what we do. Change our minds from what to what? Stop thinking on the things of this world, and start thinking on the things of God. This is repentance, it is a constant process that is ongoing all the time.

This was the reason why God destroyed the world with a flood, because the imaginations of the heart of man to evil continually.
(Gen 6:5)

What is the difference between Judas and Peter. Both of them knew the Master. Did not both of them need to repent of evil ways to mover closer to God? They both had to grow. But did both of them grow? If they did not, why not?

The difference is Judas never believed in Jesus in which Jesus tells us here.

John 6:64 But there are some of you who do not believe." (For Jesus knew from the beginning who those were who did not believe, and who it was who would betray him.)

Who do you think is living on the inside of you? Do you think he knows? Who was living inside the "man" Jesus? Who told Jesus these things?

I agree, repentance is a change of mind, a change of heart. That one has realized that what they have done was wrong and never want to do that thing again, never. If one repents about a wrong doing, knowing full well they will to the same thing again if the opportunity arises, that's not repentance. They are fooling themselves. You won't fool God, He is the heart knower, He knows your very thoughts.

Who do you think is living on the inside of you? Do you think he knows? Who was living inside the "man" Jesus? Who told Jesus these things?

There is a "new man", but is the "old man" dead or he is still striving to regain the dominion that he had within us before we acknowledged the Lord calling us?

"Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be." James 3:10

And then again...

"... let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth:" Matt 6:3

There is a battle that rages within any believer who has not already overcome the world completely as Jesus did.
