Just a Small Mistake

I built a house once.....I was lining up the subfloors to make sure all was square before nailing it down....I measured and found the thing was off a quarter inch in the first foot.....Not bad is it? But the section was forty two feet long. That means....at the end of the forty two feet, it was off ten and a half feet....LOL Well it would have been if it was all laid out......

Well what about the man who has made a mistake in his understanding of a scriptural principle? It's only a little mistake....but he builds his next understanding on that base, bringing him farther off line, then the next understanding is even farther off.....
I watched a man say something he believes is true, then he came up with another teaching based on his mistake.. the second understanding is way off. Now he comes up with another.....Problem is....He's a preacher......

Ok What about you and I? What if you're off? Or me? We definitely have to be answerable and teachable..

What do you think?

When we get into "wrong" thinking which produces "wrong" believing the Lord has his way of correcting us so we don't get it wrong. This requires a willing heart to receive correction when we are corrected by him.

Php 3:14 I press on to reach the end of the race and receive the heavenly prize for which God, through Christ Jesus, is calling us.
Php 3:15 Let all who are spiritually mature agree on these things. If you disagree on some point, I believe God will make it plain to you.
Php 3:16 But we must hold on to the progress we have already made.

Being teachable is the key. Being willing to allow the Lord to change our thinking is essential. He has shown me so many things I had wrong over the years of my life, mainly because I was taught wrong by someone, but in studying the scriptures over and over he helped me to correct that faulty thinking. I can't guarantee I have it all right now, but I am willing for him to show me if I don't.

I built a house also, its foundation was solid. It was built upon Christ's sacrifice. The walls and the roof were built with the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Do you think I should tear it down and build it to your specifications? You build as you will, I will build according to the guidance of the Holy Spirit. When the storm hits our houses, we shall see whose house stands. I thank God that at least your foundation is Christ.

I find this worrying - the assumption that one person is following the Holy Spirit and anyone who disagrees or differs is going their own way is dangerous. It's a very short path from here to personality cult.

In response to the OP, we stay true by always measuring our thoughts/theology by the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, not by our own ideas. Other believers are vital. It is good to be in conversation with people with whom we disagree - it helps to knock the edges off our own ideas and keeps us teachable.

Its more dangerous when people say, "You aren't smart enough to know the voice of the Holy Spirit. Only me, or only long dead men whom I admire can be wise enough to know the voice of the Holy Spirit. God made it so only certain elite can know the true voice of the Holy Spirit."

How foolish is that? You think God plays games with us? I wasn't telling someone else what they should believe, they were telling me what to believe, and you defend those who were the accuser. Did I EVER say it was my OWN idea? Do you even understand what the Holy Spirit is?

Sorry, I am confused by this response. Is there something I am missing? Was the opening post written about you and a disagreement you have had with Bendito.

I absolutely agree with you on the dangers of thinking about the Holy Spirit in terms of elite access. That was partly why I posted in the first place. Your first response, 'You build as you will, I will build according to the guidance of the Holy Spirit.' seemed to be close to an elitist position

Yes, the opening post was Bendito's way of trying to get people to agree that I was wrong not bend to his strongly held doctrine on another thread that I started. I was going to ignore it, but as more people posted, and him not replying, I decided to respond. But tell me why you think scripture and the Holy Spirit being good guidance is an elitist position? My point is that it is not an elitist position. I would rather not teach anyone "anything", but let them come to it on their own through the use of those two, the body and the blood. Why is it that so many Christians think that something cannot be wise unless it comes from someone long dead whom they admire?

Learning the Holy scriptures is not just by the Holy Spirit. Jesus said....

John 6:45 It is written in the Prophets, 'And they will all be taught by God.' Everyone who has heard and learned from the Father comes to me— (ESV)

When the Bible says they shall all be taught by God it is referring to God the Father, God the Son (Word of God), and the Holy Spirit all working together to teach his child. But, everything starts out with God the Father, and works down through the others. Which means, if we do not have an intimate relationship with God the Father through prayer we will learn nothing.

The opening post had nothing to do with you...It was Bandito's way of saying we have to be answerable to each other and to be teachable. Do you think you are that important? You are my brother and I love you, but I am not vindictive nor am I in any way out to change you....NOT MY JOB! And I'm not a politician, that I'm looking for votes.

Glad that's clarified. That at least makes sense of the thread so far.

Your original post did not mention scripture, and if it had, I would not have responded in the way I did.

The problem with bringing the guidance of the Holy Spirit into a disagreement is that the Holy Spirit's work in us is essentially private.

If, for example, I say 'the Holy Spirit says "x" and you must obey the Spirit', the only ways you can disagree with me are to says you reject the work of the Holy Spirit or to say that I have misinterpreted the Holy Spirit in some way. But there is no common ground on which we could work out the disagreement. It can easily be used as a kind of power play to silence someone who opposes us (ie 'you are not just disagreeing with me, you are disagreeing with God') and there's no constructive way to answer that.

The scriptures are public. We have equal access to the word of God in the Bible, so more common ground on which to work through disagreements, misunderstanding and doctrinal differences.

I hope this is enough explanation for me to stop posting in this thread. I'd rather not be caught up in a dispute like this.

peace

LOL It was just a small mistake...and why should it be a dispute? All I said is 'we must be teachable and answerable' Is that wrong? Not at all.

Hi @Bendito. I was writing in answer to Brad Huber's question. I'm all for being teachable and answerable, and I am in agreement with what you say in your opening post.

After the disagreement on the other thread, you went sorta quiet, not posting much, and then started this thread which really "does" address what we were talking about. So if its not about us, on the other thread, its obviously the same issue.

The word "mistake" isn't in the Bible. A mistake seems to infer something was done unwittingly or unknowingly.
Those who refute the Bible or ignore the Bible have no excuse, this is done willingly and knowlingly.
The Holy Spirit will never disagree with the Bible, so for me being led by the Holy Spirit is much the same as
being led by the Bible.

The mistake "I" see in too many of my own responses to people as well as in the responses of others is in the use of the word "I". It's hard to communicate at times without using the word, "I", isn't it?

Building is necessary, but who is it that does the building? Who is it that should be doing the building?

Moses received the directions from God and then the people built the Tabernacle in the wilderness. That Tabernacle was unable to accomplish God's final purpose with men probably because it was built by men outside of men's hearts. It was perhaps only a shadow the real thing. The prophet Daniel speaks of this, does he not?

"This image's head was of fine gold, his breast and his arms of silver, his belly and his thighs of brass,
His legs of iron, his feet part of iron and part of clay." Dan 2:32-33

Who built the image? Does it not describe the kingdoms of men? Did not all of those kingdoms [built by men] fall in the end?

But as we may recall the dream of Nebuchadnezzar continues and Daniel continues to give God's interpretation of it:

"Forasmuch as thou sawest that the stone was cut out of the mountain without hands, and that it brake in pieces the iron, the brass, the clay, the silver, and the gold; the great God hath made known to the king what shall come to pass hereafter: and the dream is certain, and the interpretation thereof sure." Dan 2:45

The "without hands" means to me that it was not man, but almighty God who is to do the building. If we do the building, there will be errors which must be corrected or even torn down and rebuilt before the finished product may ever stand before God and receive the words:

"Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord." Matt 25:21

What is the mountain and who is it that cuts a stone out of it, but God? Can we not be a part of that stone?

If we go to laying our own foundation what is our result likely to be?

"I have planted, Apollos watered; but God gave the increase.

So then neither is he that planteth any thing, neither he that watereth; but God that giveth the increase." I Cor 3:6-7

Your first sentence reminded me of something pretty neat. Its a little off topic, but everytime you or anyone says I am .... hungry, happy, sad, whatever the case may be, you are saying God's name "I AM". So not every sentence with the word "I" is self serving if God's name is in it, so long as the rest of what is said isn't selfish.
