I am wary of the view that we can obey the Bible without the need for interpreting it. Often we talk of the Bible as the 'users manual', but in fact it is nothing of the sort. It is an account of God revealing himself and his plan for creation to his people in a history that unfolds over hundreds of years. It addresses the needs of people in very different times, places and situations.
Amen to part about obeying without understanding. I am reminded of a story of a prisoner of war that was beaten everyday
because he didn't obey the enemy commander. After the war was over he was commended for not "giving in".
It was then he confessed, "I never understood exactly what it was he wanted me to do".
I divide the old testament and new testament (besides the obvious covenant differences).
The old testament reveals the character of God. He is still same God. He didn't change.
The new testament, the teachings of Jesus/Paul (and the other disciples) are a manual of sorts
of how we should live today, what we should and shouldn't do so to speak.
I don't believe the needs of people 2,000 years ago are really any different from what they need today.
