The anger of the Lord

Loyal
It seems over a dozen times at least, there is a phrase in the Bible.
"The anger of the Lord burned... against... (someone)".

Exod 4:14; Then the anger of the LORD burned against Moses, and He said, "Is there not your brother Aaron the Levite? I know that he speaks fluently. And moreover, behold, he is coming out to meet you; when he sees you, he will be glad in his heart.
Numb 11:1; Now the people became like those who complain of adversity in the hearing of the LORD; and when the LORD heard it, His anger was kindled, and the fire of the LORD burned among them and consumed some of the outskirts of the camp.
Numb 12:9; So the anger of the LORD burned against them and He departed.
Numb 32:10; "So the LORD'S anger burned in that day, and He swore, saying,
Numb 32:13; "So the LORD'S anger burned against Israel, and He made them wander in the wilderness forty years, until the entire generation of those who had done evil in the sight of the LORD was destroyed.
Deut 29:27; 'Therefore, the anger of the LORD burned against that land, to bring upon it every curse which is written in this book;
Josh 7:1; But the sons of Israel acted unfaithfully in regard to the things under the ban, for Achan, the son of Carmi, the son of Zabdi, the son of Zerah, from the tribe of Judah, took some of the things under the ban, therefore the anger of the LORD burned against the sons of Israel.
Jdgs 2:14; The anger of the LORD burned against Israel, and He gave them into the hands of plunderers who plundered them; and He sold them into the hands of their enemies around them, so that they could no longer stand before their enemies.
Jdgs 2:20; So the anger of the LORD burned against Israel, and He said, "Because this nation has transgressed My covenant which I commanded their fathers and has not listened to My voice,
Jdgs 10:7; The anger of the LORD burned against Israel, and He sold them into the hands of the Philistines and into the hands of the sons of Ammon.
Jdgs 14:19; Then the Spirit of the LORD came upon him mightily, and he went down to Ashkelon and killed thirty of them and took their spoil and gave the changes of clothes to those who told the riddle. And his anger burned, and he went up to his father's house.
2 Sam 6:7; And the anger of the LORD burned against Uzzah, and God struck him down there for his irreverence; and he died there by the ark of God.
2 Sam 24:1; Now again the anger of the LORD burned against Israel, and it incited David against them to say, "Go, number Israel and Judah."
2 Kin 23:26; However, the LORD did not turn from the fierceness of His great wrath with which His anger burned against Judah, because of all the provocations with which Manasseh had provoked Him.
1 Chron 13:10; The anger of the LORD burned against Uzza, so He struck him down because he put out his hand to the ark; and he died there before God.
2 Chron 25:15; Then the anger of the LORD burned against Amaziah, and He sent him a prophet who said to him, "Why have you sought the gods of the people who have not delivered their own people from your hand?"
Isa 5:25; On this account the anger of the LORD has burned against His people, And He has stretched out His hand against them and struck them down. And the mountains quaked, and their corpses lay like refuse in the middle of the streets. For all this His anger is not spent, But His hand is still stretched out.

About 60 times in the Bible.... we hear about something called the "wrath of God".

Deut 9:7; "Remember, do not forget how you provoked the LORD your God to wrath in the wilderness; from the day that you left the land of Egypt until you arrived at this place, you have been rebellious against the LORD.

2 Kin 23:26; However, the LORD did not turn from the fierceness of His great wrath with which His anger burned against Judah, because of all the provocations with which Manasseh had provoked Him.

Psa 38:1; A Psalm of David, for a memorial. O LORD, rebuke me not in Your wrath, And chasten me not in Your burning anger.

Jer 23:19; "Behold, the storm of the LORD has gone forth in wrath, Even a whirling tempest; It will swirl down on the head of the wicked.

I notice in the majority of these verses... the people God is angry with, are the Jews. His chosen people.

Judges 2 is a good example of this.

Jdgs 2:11; Then the sons of Israel did evil in the sight of the LORD and served the Baals,
Jdgs 2:12; and they forsook the LORD, the God of their fathers, who had brought them out of the land of Egypt, and followed other gods from among the gods of the peoples who were around them, and bowed themselves down to them; thus they provoked the LORD to anger.
Jdgs 2:13; So they forsook the LORD and served Baal and the Ashtaroth.
Jdgs 2:14; The anger of the LORD burned against Israel, and He gave them into the hands of plunderers who plundered them; and He sold them into the hands of their enemies around them, so that they could no longer stand before their enemies.
Jdgs 2:15; Wherever they went, the hand of the LORD was against them for evil, as the LORD had spoken and as the LORD had sworn to them, so that they were severely distressed.

This is less than 3 verses after Joshua dies. This all happened in one single generation.
The people "forsook God" and went after other Gods. So His anger burned against them.
He gave them over to the hands of their enemies. They could no longer stand against their enemies.
The hand of the Lord was against them.

God didn't simply ignore them. He made sure they couldn't against their enemies. The hand of the Lord
"was against them:.

Wasn't all of this in the old testament? No, there are few in the New Testament as well.
Do we think that God has changed? That His nature has changed?
On one hand we quote Heb 13:8; Jas 1:17; Mal 3:6; which all say God doesn't vary or change.
But on the other hand we say God is love, not wrath.
But if you really love someone, can you not be angry when they betray you?
Perhaps even worse... can you not be angry if they betray your only Son?

On one hand we quote Heb 13:8; Jas 1:17; Mal 3:6; which all say God doesn't vary or change.
But on the other hand we say God is love, not wrath.
But if you really love someone, can you not be angry when they betray you?
Perhaps even worse... can you not be angry in they betray your only Son?

Very very soon now the age of Grace will end, with the catching up of the bride....Truthfully I expect this to happen in the next couple of months.....Then the great tribulation period will begin and God's anger will be seen again....During the age of Grace the 'war' was over....Jesus is/was standing at the door like Moses, calling, inviting, pleading to all peoples "Come into the ark, Please come in! Be saved from the floods to come! You will die if you do not come in! Please Come to me and be saved!" Before you know it, the bride will be gone and the doors are closed...The bride is caught up and the unready ones will be left to face Gods wrath.....And there WILL be many of them who are Christians among the left behind. Why Christians...They were not ready....Jesus said he would come for those who were watching for Him.
Matthew 24:37-42 (CJB)
37 For the Son of Man’s coming will be just as it was in the days of Noach. 38 Back then, before the Flood, people went on eating and drinking, taking wives and becoming wives, right up till the day Noach entered the ark; 39 and they didn’t know what was happening until the Flood came and swept them all away. It will be just like that when the Son of Man comes. 40 Then there will be two men in a field — one will be taken and the other left behind. 41 There will be two women grinding flour at the mill — one will be taken and the other left behind. 42 So stay alert, because you don’t know on what day your Lord will come.
Luke 12:37 (KJV)
37 Blessed are those servants, whom the lord when he cometh shall find watching: verily I say unto you, that he shall gird himself, and make them to sit down to meat, and will come forth and serve them.

So how do us Christians know that we will go in the rapture? Enoch walked with God and he was not, for God took him..
Genesis 5:24
There is a good clue...Enoch walked with God....Enoch spend regular time with God in intimate fellowship....

God took Noah out of the way before the Earth was destroyed by flood.
Why? Noah walked with God
Genesis 6:9
These are the generations of Noah: Noah was a just man and perfect in his generations, and Noah walked with God.
Noah spent much time in habitual intimate fellowship with God....and was caught up...

How much time does the average Christian spend in habitual intimate fellowship with God? How many average Christians are even watching for Him? We have to ask ourselves....Are we ready? Am I watching for Him? Do I spend time in habitual intimate fellowship with my God? Or do I put up other gods to bow down to...My job, fishing, hobbies...whatever....What do I put before God? Do I give Him only the dregs of my day? When the rapture happens....Will I be caught up or will I be left behind? If you ask yourself questions like this, expect an answer...Your spirit knows if you have an intimate relationship with God....He's right inside of you after all.

B-A-C I realize that I'm not responding to your share in a precise way but it still fits I think.

Greetings,

It is not wise to taint the LORD'S ways with that with which we are tainted with.
Our ways are our ways and our reactions are often based on selfishness and pride with anger against or because of another usually being justified to excuse our need of a Holy and sinless Saviour.

Although our desire may be to mirror God in love and truth, allowing anger and wrath some place because we desire what is best for another, we have no license nor permission nor liberty to execute our judgement upon another BUT we are under commandment to love. Until we perfect that we will never properly comprehend the anger and wrath of God you speak about.

I notice in the majority of these verses... the people God is angry with, are the Jews. His chosen people.
Yes.

Bless you ....><>

Perhaps, but I don't see this as a "taint". I see it as a good thing. We are made in His image. We serve a jealous God.

I have to agree with B-A-C here Br Bear.....I think this a valid question....God was angry a lot in the Old Covenant and not in the New.....I suspect many Christians wonder why....It's not taught much in churches

Greetings again,

I have yet to know of anyone who was led by the Spirit to be angry or exercise wrath. Surely we are to listen and hearken to the LORD and do as He says. I can not see any commandments given by Jesus to be angry or exercise wrath.
On the contrary, we are told to love and also to give thanks in all things. How then can we validate being angry or exercising wrath?
Our flesh is always keen to do such things. We say we are crucified with Christ and other claims similar but too often our carnal fleshly side likes to be known to be still waring against the Spirit.

I know most certainly that I have never ever been able to honestly justify anger or wrath from myself. Have you?
I most certainly have entertained the idea especially after being angry or exercising wrath and felt quite comforted in my anger or wrath... for a very short time, until the LORD has reminded me that I have been saved by grace and not because I deserve it and that our reactions to things that might stir the flesh ought to be as one who is dead to this world and the things in it.

Called out. Not of this world.

I am reminded also of the many times the LORD had/has every right to exercise wrath and anger against me and instead dealt/deals graciously towards me and blessed/blesses me instead.

Some things really get up my nose and i get pretty upset but again, without first the grace of God in Christ Jesus the Lord towards me, I would be doing plenty more than i do of stirring others to wrath and pushing thier anger buttons.

Does this make sense to you?

I am reminded often of the Prince of Peace.
Who rules our hearts and minds? Whatsoever things are of good report, should we not rather dwell on these things? If there be any virtue or praise... things that are lovely?

I am reminded very often of this, not because I am anything to boast about but because i am so often needing it as i get it wrong so much.

Will the Spirit provoke me to anger or wrath? Will the Spirit instruct me in that way? I don't think so. How about you?

Bless you ....><>

We are told in at least one place to be angry...And the how of it too.
Ephesians 4:25-27 (CJB)
25 Therefore, stripping off falsehood, let everyone speak truth with his neighbor,a]">[a] because we are intimately related to each other as parts of a body. 26 Be angry, but don’t sinb]">[b] — don’t let the sun go down before you have dealt with the cause of your anger; 27 otherwise you leave room for the Adversary.

There is cause to be angry at injustice for example...Be angry at the fact that people are starved, enslaved, murdered etc...And do something about it...

God's anger and/or wrath come from an absolute knowledge and understanding of the whole situation. It was because of this knowledge and understanding that instead of getting angry at those who were crucifying him, he said, "Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do" Luke 23:34

It is right us to be angry when it is God in us expressing His anger through us, but when if we are doubt about it being God's anger, might we not find ourselves standing against the Lord with these disciples?

And when his disciples James and John saw this, they said, Lord, wilt thou that we command fire to come down from heaven, and consume them, even as Elias did?

But he turned, and rebuked them, and said, Ye know not what manner of spirit ye are of.
Luke 9:54-55

And before we enter into any house we are to pray that peace be in that house, if there is no peace found, your peace will return to you.

We are messengers of the most high God; yes, people gets angry in discussions that do not cuddle their sin; hence a child of God knows the Way and We listen to our reproach and do not even try to justify self.

Paul spoke before the entire town and the people did not receive Paul's testimony and chaos begin pointing fingers at Paul, and Paul was accused of turning the entire town upside down; though Paul preferred the people receive his testimony, however they did not. Yes Paul turned the town upside down by preaching the Word of God and the heart's of men was revealed in their sin.

I believe Paul was grieved in his heart because of their unbelief, not necessarily angry; for Paul knew vengeance and wrath belong to the Lord. He shook the very dust off him when he left that place; and pray God gave mercy, they know not what they do.

Amen. All praise glory and honor be unto God Amen.

The ''know not what they do'' was them not knowing they were crucifying God. The reason many wanted Him crucified was because He was calling Himself God John 10:33. If any interrupted His ministry / wanted to murder Him in His early twenties...I imagine God getting upset with them. Much like He did with any interrupting His plans for the Jews.

I think this thread may have gotten a bit off track.
Whether God gets angry for the same reasons we do or not, the point here is... He does get angry.
I do agree with Br Bear that God isn't as petty like we sometimes are, and He is above getting angry
for things that don't matter to Him. But I think it would be wrong to say "nothing" matters to Him.

Can God get angry with Christians? That is a question that is going unanswered. We can grasp Him getting angry with the unsaved who continually refuse to repent. With the Jews who after being given His word, special protection, levites and high priests. But with us? Do you ever get '''angry'' at your child? Frustrated, disappointed yes. But anger? Wanting to kill?

I guess we all need to first answer if Ananias and Sapphira were saved Christians. I can't think of another example of Christians experiencing His anger.

Was God not angry with His people who sold in the house of prayer and overturned the money changers tables?

It wasn't originally the intent here to say God can or cannot be angry with "His Children".
At the very least he was angry with "some" people. Whether they were His children or not wasn't really the question.
But were the Jews "His children"?
Were Saul, Solomon, and Esau His children?
Annanias and Sapphira, were they His children?
Judas?
Was the man having affair with his fathers wife His child?
I don't know if He would call the Pharisee's "His children". He did call them vipers and sons of hell.
As mentioned, he chased the money lenders and dove sellers from the temple with a scourge.
In several parables the "master" (God/Jesus) is angry...
Luke 14:21; Heb 3:10; Heb 3:17; Matt 25:26; etc..

You ask a very good question here B-A-C...Who are God's children? Those that seek Him? Those that claim to follow Him? How can you be a child of God is you are not a Jew? B-A-C you mention the Pharisees, and are they God's children....Let me answer that with a question....Were they following covenant? No....So how could they be God's children...He said "You will be my people and I will be your God" They broke covenant, stepped away from it.

Are we God's children? Yes If we keep seeking after Him.
John 8:42
Jesus said unto them, If God were your Father, ye would love me: for I proceeded forth and came from God; neither came I of myself, but he sent me.

John 14:15
If ye love me, keep my commandments (Word).

John 14:23
Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him.

But the entire thing is based on Covenant...We live by covenant....The Jews were to live by covenant...
Romans 9:7-8King (KJV)
7 Neither, because they are the seed of Abraham, are they all children: but, In Isaac shall thy seed be called.

8 That is, They which are the children of the flesh, these are not the children of God: but the children of the promise are counted for the seed.

Though many did not.. In the Old Covenant God did get angry..As you pointed out God got angry several times.....In the New Covenant its a different situation... God handed us the life preserver, Jesus...Now He stands at the door of the ark, coaxing, begging, inviting all to come in and be saved...No anger...None at all....It is pretty clear....Can He get angry? Of course He can...He's demonstrated that in the Old Covenant....Will He get angry again? Again of course! He says it about the days of the great tribulation. and His description of the Coming of our Jesus to the Earth...

So God is not angry?
Why is He coming back in vengeance and wrath?

If we are not for Him, we are against Him; and His face is against those miserable beings who run in error, scoffing and biting at the Lord's servants. If we have done it to the least of these, my children, we have done it unto Him. Amen

Dear One I said that God is not angry NOW....I said He was angry many times in the Old Covenant...I said He will display wrath and anger in the Great tribulation period.....But NOW He is not angry...Now is the age of Grace...Where the door is open to allow all who will to enter in and be saved....Soon, very very soon, that door will close, and the age of Grace is over...
