Sinners prayer?

Active
Is that even a prayer? I looked for it via Google to find it in scripture & the only thing I come up with is what people claim it to be, not God.

I learned that God doesn't hear sinners prayers UNLESS they are praying for their salvation, repent & to ask God to come into their lives & be their Lord & savior.

So often I hear the unsaved say they pray... But God said he doesn't hear them. So in all actuality they are talking to the wind. Is this correct?

Where did you hear your comment from? God loves all His children even all of us that sin everyday. I believe he hears all prayers. He answer according to His will. Being in Vietnam and seeing the hells of war I seen many a Marine that were not Christians praying for their safety and believe their prayers were answered. Several because of their answered prayers turned to God. God works His will on men who He knows their heart.

1. It is church specific. Every church has / needs their own sinners prayer for new converts. I guess we should each have our own too, for those we are leading to the Lord. But then I guess many don't like parroting such.

2. Correct. John 9:31 We know that God does not listen to sinners. He listens to the godly person who does his will.

I wouldn't say they literally have to repent and accept Jesus before He hears them. They just have to have a heart after His (godly person). This leads to repentance. Anyone trying to follow Rom 12:9 or James 1:27 for example are a stone throw away from repenting and being saved.

3. I think the context of John 9:31 is that God does not act on their prayers. God is omniscient. Rom 9 is crystal clear on that.

I believe God knows all, hears all, but... He doesn't act upon sinners prayers "unless" it is a prayer of repentance. For God lifts up the humble.

1John 5:14 And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask (prayer) any thing according to his will, he heareth us:

For God to hear our prayers that requires "faith". Faith comes by hearing the Word of God, which is God's will.
Whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. They must hear the Gospel (the Word of God) which is God's will for them. This brings to them the faith needed for the "whosoever" to be heard by God.

Rom 10:13 For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.
Rom 10:14 How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed (faith)? and how shall they believe (have faith) in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher?

Rom 10:17 So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

Salvation comes by confessing with the mouth, and believing with the heart.

Rom 10:9 because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.
Rom 10:10 For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved.

There's no passage specifically in the Bible called "the sinners prayer".
It usually involves asking Jesus into your heart, confession and repentance, and of course believing in Jesus.

There are some prayers God ignores.
Isa 1:15; Prov 28:9; Psa 66:18; Isa 59:2; Jer 7:16; John 9:31; etc...

Sometimes sinners are led and used by God to accomplish His purpose. This was true with Pharaoh when the 10 plagues came to Egypt. Apparently in spite of being used as the left hand of God Pharaoh never was moved himself to a real repentance. God certainly hears everyone, but when He acts favorably toward a person or in a person, is it not because of something He sees in that person's heart?

No matter what words a person mouths with his physical mouth they are meaningless if they are not good in his heart:

"Every way of a man is right in his own eyes: but the LORD pondereth the hearts." Prov 21:2

Just keep in mind......It's not as difficult as a person might believe to get into heaven.
God wants people to be saved so badly He'll grab any excuse to sweep them in to the Kingdom... Such is mercy...Such is Love

The man is on his death bed, with his last breath he whispers "Jesus save me" That's all he says. Then he is gone.. Is he saved?

Acts 2:21
And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved.

Here's one for you...He's having an argument with a friend about Jesus...."Of course Jesus is the son of God" he shouts at his friend..."Do you really believe that nonsense?" his friend retorts...."Of course I do" is the young mans response...
Is he saved?
1 John 4:15
Whosoever shall confess that Jesus is the Son of God, God dwelleth in him, and he in God.

With or without a recipe prayer for salvation, God says "Its much easier than you think for a person to get into heaven"

What about their fruits?
What fruits did you show when you were saved? But you ARE saved...Fruits come from growth in faith and maturity. What fruits did the thief on the cross show? But Jesus said "Today you will be with me in paradise"

Dear Brother,

I know metaphorically speaking, but God does not grab any excuse, but rather is exclusive to who will, to use your phrase..."sweep them in to the Kingdom". That is why it is easy in one way, for the choice is singular, but more difficult for those in the World who believe there are many other ways.

Just saying.

Jesus said to him, "I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me. John 14:6

He may be saved, but he will not hear the cherished words of our father in heaven "well done my faithful servant" He may be saved but he will not get the treasures and rewards of a someone like a missionary where there work here on earth, to lay up treasures in heaven. IMO

Praise Jesus !!

I disagree.

Treasures in heaven will not be one Porsche for every year of missionary work. Treasures will be positions. Positions will be based on the level of trust God has in us. The level of trust God has for us is directly related to our depth of intent in accepting Him.

Example: Two guys in your life. The first employs you and gives you a salary for ten years. The second bullied you at school but after school in the army, he takes a bullet for you. They both love you. The one loves you more.

God is able to discern heart and minds intentions at a level we can't. If the criminal on the cross that accepted Jesus had a chance to live on, he would have had many good works. God knows this.

Good questions and good verses, Bendito, but always consider along the words mouthed the heart of the person. If the man on his death bed only cried out in some vague last resort hope that Jesus would stop his natural death, wouldn't it be what James called "asking amiss".

Also with the verse you quoted in Acts 2:21 consider carefully with the words penned by Paul and the amplification of what it means to "call on the name":

"For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.

How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher?

And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things!" Rom 10:13-15

Long before I accepted Jesus as my savior and Lord, I knew that I knew that I knew that if I died I would go to hell, in spite of the teaching I received all my life. My spirit knew that I was not connected to God.. If this man calls upon Jesus to save him, it seems obvious that he knows about Jesus, he must have heard, been preached to.....and decided, late, but better late than never, to take advantage of His offer. What do you think?

If simply calling upon Jesus is enough, I wonder why those in Matt 7:21-22; aren't saved?

Or why five of the virgins in Matt 25:11-12; weren't saved?

Or why the lazy servant was thrown out in Matt 25:30;

Maybe the death bed confession of faith will save you. But not everyone who call Jesus "Lord"
will be saved.

I agree....There are many who think they are Christians but are not..those who believe that we must work our way to heaven for example and others of course...

We want to be able to look into the heart of a person and know that they are saved. So in place of that we attempt to look at their works or even their words to make a determination of their heart. Yet, we know that only God can know the heart of man, and so we are left with presumptions and no certainty to the condition of man.

That is why Paul's verse to the church at Philippi and to each of us comes to me- So then, my beloved, just as you have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your salvation with fear and trembling; Philippians 2:12

As long as we can accept that God surely knows who will accept or reject. Allow yourselves to be concerned for others and even ourselves, but ultimately it is God who showers His Grace through the Sacrifice of Jesus Christ. It is the individual who accepts or rejects such a precious gift.

With the love of Christ Jesus.
