Over the years of being a Shepherd of several Flocks of the Master Shepherd Jesus Christ, I have noted two basic classes of Believers. One class or group is very serious in our local Churches. They love serving and exercising their spiritual gifts.

The other group are basic pew warmers. They are Christians, just not very serious in their walk. Perhaps it's because they have never really learned about the importance of the Holy Spirit in their every day activities.

This thread is to bring our attention to the great importance of the Holy Spirit in our lives. Many of us focus on the Word of God in daily studies, which is very necessary. We focus on our gratitude of God's Grace and His Salvation that He has drawn us to. We also focus on our love for the Brethren.

I believe that there is needed a new focus on the reality of the ministry of the Holy Spirit in our daily lives so that He can, in us, overcome the energy of the flesh which is at war with Him. What I'm hoping for is that each of you would post on your beliefs on how do we practically "walk in the Spirit" and make Him our dominate focus.

How do we walk in the Spirit? How can we be led of the Spirit? How do we exercise the Fruit of the Spirit? How do we Live in the Spirit? I'm really after a daily conscious LIVING in the Spirit of Almighty God. I'm convinced that a life dedicated to living, praying, and a determination to acknowledge the presence of the Holy Spirit in our hearts and body, we will be different from those who don't, and a witness to the world that we are different because of what God and His Son Jesus has done in our lives, to His Glory.

It's always a good topic. But it always seems to get off topic rather quickly most of the time

Many Pentecostals believe in something called the "Baptism" of the Holy Spirit.
Four times in the gospels John the Baptists is recorded as saying "Jesus will baptize you in the Holy Spirit" (and fire).
Matt 3:11; Mark 1:8; Luke 3:16; John 1:33;
I could not find anywhere where Jesus Himself said this in the gospels, but Acts 11:16; is quoting Jesus saying "You will be baptized
in the Holy Spirit".

Peter says in Acts 2:38; "Repent" and be baptized in the name of Jesus... and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
In the case of Cornelius, he received the Holy Spirit first, and then was baptized ( Acts 10:44-47; )

In the NASB Bible, the phrase "Holy Spirit" is only found 3 times in the old testament.
Psalms 51:11; (David's repentance prayer for Bathsheba)
Isa 63:10; and 11.

The interesting thing about those passages is that it seems the Holy Spirit could be taken away from people.

Psa 51:10; Create in me a clean heart, O God, And renew a steadfast spirit within me.
Psa 51:11; Do not cast me away from Your presence And do not take Your Holy Spirit from me.
Psa 51:12; Restore to me the joy of Your salvation And sustain me with a willing spirit.

Isa 63:10; But they rebelled And grieved His Holy Spirit; Therefore He turned Himself to become their enemy, He fought against them.
Isa 63:11; Then His people remembered the days of old, of Moses. Where is He who brought them up out of the sea with the shepherds of His flock? Where is He who put His Holy Spirit in the midst of them,

Some churches teach that you don't just "get" the Holy Spirit automatically, but that you have to ask for it.

Luke 11:13; "If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him?"

Some believe God only gives the Holy Spirit to those who are obedient to Him.

Acts 5:32; "And we are witnesses of these things; and so is the Holy Spirit, whom God has given to those who obey Him."

Now whether or not the "Baptism" of the Holy Spirit is a separate thing from simply "having" the Holy Spirit is often debated.
But all five times in the New Testament that people are mentioned as being baptized in the Holy Spirit, it was always to people who had
already been believers for a period of time.

In Acts 2:4; this happened to 120 people, including Mary and the disciples... who had been following Jesus for about 3 years prior to this.
Saul who became Paul, became a believer on the road to Damascus. Acts 9:3-9; )
But he didn't get baptized in the Holy Spirit until sometimes after Acts 9:17;
In Acts 10:1-2; it says Cornelius was a "devout man, who feared God and prayed continually". So it seems he also was a believer.
But he also did not receive the Holy Spirit until Acts 10:44-45; (at least 4 days later - Acts 10:40; )
In Acts 19:1; Paul runs into some disciples. they had already been baptized into John the Baptist's baptism, but they they didn't even
know about the Holy Spirit. So now, sometime later, they receive the baptism of the Holy Spirit. ( Acts 19:6; )

One interesting note that causes some debate is that Acts 19 mentions 3 baptisms.
John's baptism (water and repentance) (Acts 19:3; )
Baptized in the name of Jesus (Acts 19:5; )
and Baptized in the Holy Spirit (Acts 19:6; )

This is getting long winded.... and it doesn't answer the question posed in the OP directly about walking in the Spirit and being led by the
Spirit... but I think maybe the place to start is... you can't walk in it if you don't have it.

Also keep in mind, we can offend the Holy Spirit.

He can be grieved. - Isa 63:10; Eph 4:30;
He can be quenched - 1 Thes 5:19;
He can be insulted - Heb 10:29;
He can be blasphemed - Matt 12:31-32; Luke 12:10;
He can be lied to - Acts 5:3; (He knows it's a lie, but it's still a lie).

Charles Spurgeon had these two comments in relation to Galatians 5:25

"...two most important things in our holy religion are the life of faith and the walk of faith."

Explaining: "You will never find true faith unattended by true godliness; on the other hand, you will never discover a truly holy life which has not for its root a living faith upon the righteousness of Christ."

Sadly, too often one is done without the other. As you have stated dear brother. "Pew Sitters". I would also add another category to those sitters. They would be in the category of "Workers without Joy" or as CS named them: "Pharisees'". It seems more of a "chore" rather than a "labor of love" for them. They are doing it because it's expected of them and not for the Love of God.

"So foolish was I, and ignorant: I was as a beast before thee.” Ps 73:22

Is this not what it means to walk in the Spirit, to always have the Word of God in us shining the Light onto the Path that God has placed before each believer? The Spirit, that is the Holy Spirit, gives us Life by bringing to Life within us the Word of God, which shines the Light before us so that we can see our Way along the path that God sets before us. While we are walking thusly, are we not walking in the Spirit?

Walking in the Spirit is as natural as breathing air, except it is not natural, but supernatural.

Rom 8:5 For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit.

Any man who keeps his heart, and mind set on the things above were Jesus sits in his Glory will be constantly walking in, and by the Spirit of God.
How long can a man walk in the Spirit? As long as he keeps his heart set on the things of the Spirit.

If you can answer this, everything else about the spirit is answered as well.
Galatians 5:16 is scripture and therefore correct but the secret is doing it 24/7...pretty hard for a human...I think that is one of the reasons Paul gave us Romans 7 and followed it up with Romans 8:1 because, including himself, he knew we are not perfect.
So does that negate the fact that we can walk in the spirit?...absolutely not, the truth is that all true Christians are bound together by this super natural glue, we all have different gifts and different spiritual walks no matter what trials we go through. That is what sets us apart, the possession of God in us! Not that any one scripture points to it, but that, we just some how know it...know he is there, out of our control, a precious and Holy gift.When ever, judgement day does come, it is this one identifying mark that separates us from the "Goats", that the Holy Spirit, Jesus Christ, is in us, walking with us...walking in the spirit!

A man or women who is walking in the Spirit will speak the very oracles of God, and every thing they do will be done in the power of the Spirit, for it will be God's ability. Everything they say will be anointed of the Spirit of God, and it will come out with authority. People will notice it, especially those to whom God is using.

1Peter 4:11 If any man speak, let him speak as the oracles of God; if any man minister, let him do it as of the ability which God giveth: that God in all things may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom be praise and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.

A man walking in the Spirit will have the very thoughts of God, for no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. We have received not the spirit of this world, but the Spirit that is from God so that we might know the thoughts of God.

1Co 2:11 For who knows a person's thoughts except the spirit of that person, which is in him? So also no one comprehends the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God.
1Co 2:12 Now we have received not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might understand the things freely given us by God.

This completely destroys the notion, "you never know what God is going to do". Having the "mind of Christ", and possessing his thoughts by being filled with his Spirit is a powerful way to live by, and for the Lord. It's fun!!

So far, you folk have posted some very good points of truth to walking in the Spirit. Lets look at a very important section of Scripture that relates to the flesh and the Spirit of God....

Romans 7:14 "For we know that the law is spiritual: but I am carnal, sold under sin.
7:15 For that which I do I allow not: for what I would, that do I not; but what I hate, that do I.
7:16 If then I do that which I would not, I consent unto the law that it is good.
7:17 Now then it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me.
7:18 For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not.
7:19 For the good that I would I do not: but the evil which I would not, that I do.
7:20 Now if I do that I would not, it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me.
7:21 I find then a law, that, when I would do good, evil is present with me.
7:22 For I delight in the law of God after the inward man:
7:23 But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members.

Now, this is our problem living our daily lives. BUT, the Holy Spirit has a remedy....

Romans 8:1 "There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
8:2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death.
8:3 For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh:
8:4 That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
8:5 For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit.
8:6 For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.
8:7 Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be.
8:8 So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God.

To walk in the Spirit means to conduct our lives (our lifestyles) according to the Spirit, i.e. in the Spirit - in his power, strength and wisdom - and according to the teachings of Christ and his apostles. It also means that daily we must be in the Word, listening to what it teaches us, and doing what it says. We can't walk in the Spirit if we are still walking (conducting our lives) in the flesh. Paul said that if we walk according to the flesh, we will die, but if by the Spirit we are putting to death the deeds of the flesh, we will live (See: Ro. 8:1-14). Jesus said that if we want to come after him, we must deny self, and take up our cross daily (die daily to sin and self) and follow (obey) him. This is walking in the Spirit.

As well, walking in the Spirit means we are sensitive to the promptings and leadings of the Spirit in our lives, and we follow his lead. Now, this requires spiritual discernment and knowledge of scripture, because other voices speak to us, too - Satan, evil spirits, other humans, our pasts, and our own consciences and human emotions, etc. So, we must discern the voice of the Spirit and know when it is the Spirit speaking to us, and when it is other voices speaking. The biggest test, in seeing if the voice we are hearing in our minds is of God, is to compare what we are hearing against the Word of Truth and against the divine character and will of God - Father, Son and Holy Spirit - to see if it is consistent with God's character, his will for our lives, and with the teachings of his Word. For example, the Holy Spirit convicts of specific sin, and he will give remedy for that sin, whereas Satan loves to accuse falsely and to make us feel guilty over nothing, and he will try to get us to be discouraged and to give up, whereas the Spirit will encourage us in the way we should go, and will give us practical ways in which we can follow our Lord in obedience.

Many people may claim they are walking according to the Spirit, when in reality they are just following their own emotions, because they have been taught to confuse the Spirit with human feelings. They will say the Spirit was present in their gatherings just because the music got louder and the same words were repeated over and over again, or the preaching was loud and forceful or passionate, and thus people's emotions were stirred. But, the true test of whether or not it was the Spirit or whether it was just human emotion is whether or not God was glorified through it and human lives were inspired to change, i.e. to be turned from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan to God, so they can receive forgiveness of sins and a place among those who are sanctified by faith in Jesus Christ (Ac. 26:16-18).

I've seen too much fakery in the church all in the name of the "Holy Spirit" when it had nothing to do with the Spirit or giving honor and glory to God or leading people to walk in holiness. It was all emotion and commotion, but not devotion to Christ and to his Word. Oftentimes those who have such emotional experiences walk away from them and go right back to living in the flesh, and not according to the Spirit at all, because they are being taught that an emotional high is the Holy Spirit, and they are not being taught to walk in godliness and holiness, and to resist Satan, to flee temptation, and to draw near to God in full assurance of faith. So, if your "Holy Spirit" experience only gives you an emotional high for a short period of time, but it doesn't produce godly and holy living, then it is probably not the Holy Spirit at all, but the flesh disguised as the Spirit.

One of the "acid" tests to whether or not the Spirit of God is using a person is when people hear you speak or teach, they will not remember who they heard it from, only the message as coming from God himself. The messenger is not important, only the message is as directed by the Spirit of God.

All glory to God! I just share what he has taught me, and from what he has allowed me to personally experience, and from what I know of his Word and what it teaches. I pray, and I ask him to guide my words, and I trust he does that. So, for the good God does through it, he deserves all the praise. It really goes to what Curtis said about having the mind of Christ and possessing his thoughts. The closer we grow to the Lord, and we are filled with his Spirit, the more we feel what he feels and we see what he sees. I believe what I have shared comes from the heart of Jesus. Wow Sister Sue. That is the best response that I've received as yet. Thank you so very much. Actually, I'm going to copy your post and keep it in my file on the Holy Spirit. If you don't mind, I'd like to re-post this on another Forum that I'm a member. We are studying the same theme and subject.

Thank you for responding robaston. I don't believe you have replied to any of my threads, so I welcome you as a new friend. I hope that we can fellowship many times in the future. A new voice is always challenging to me because of what you believe and how you might instruct me as well as others.

Robaston is often quiet, but he is one of those, I believe, that has some of the "good" in him which is God alone. Thank God for men like Robaston!

A man or women who is walking in the Spirit will speak the very oracles of God, and every thing they do will be done in the power of the Spirit, for it will be God's ability. Everything they say will be anointed of the Spirit of God, and it will come out with authority. People will notice it, especially those to whom God is using.

1Peter 4:11 If any man speak, let him speak as the oracles of God; if any man minister, let him do it as of the ability which God giveth: that God in all things may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom be praise and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.

A man walking in the Spirit will have the very thoughts of God, for no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. We have received not the spirit of this world, but the Spirit that is from God so that we might know the thoughts of God.

1Co 2:11 For who knows a person's thoughts except the spirit of that person, which is in him? So also no one comprehends the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God.
1Co 2:12 Now we have received not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might understand the things freely given us by God.

This completely destroys the notion, "you never know what God is going to do". Having the "mind of Christ", and possessing his thoughts by being filled with his Spirit is a powerful way to live by, and for the Lord. It's fun!!

Thank you Curtis. That is a very good post of the OP. Obviously you have a good relationship with the Holy Spirit, and knowledge of the Word of YHWH.

We should love God first
We should obey his commandments
We should stay in the word
Don't walk in the flesh
Act with love and compassion
Await our " Blessed Hope"!
And the list goes on and it is endless, has no limits because of the absolute perfection of the Holy Spirit.
Yes we all, as Christians should walk in the spirit, no doubt. It should a daily desire and one of the very first fruits of him in us.
But make no mistake, when we fail and we will, it is not a sign that we do not walk in the spirit.
Walking in the spirit is judged by God alone and by only his gift to us and not determined by one of us!
And when we do slide, doubt or, otherwise mess up, Romans 8:1 and because of our our own indwelt blessed hope, we realize the truth, pick our selves up and move forward to glory!
