It's interesting, the words "obedience" and "obey" appear more often in the new testament than they do in the old testament.
It would seem obedience to certain things is required.
John 3:36; "He who believes in the Son has eternal life; but he who does not obey the Son will not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him."
Is obedience to Jesus's teachings required?
Acts 5:29; But Peter and the apostles answered, "We must obey God rather than men.
Acts 5:32; "And we are witnesses of these things; and so is the Holy Spirit, whom God has given to those who obey Him."
Is the Holy Spirit given to those who don't obey?
Rom 6:12; Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its lusts,
Rom 6:13; and do not go on presenting the members of your body to sin as instruments of unrighteousness; but present yourselves to God as those alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness to God.
Rom 6:14; For sin shall not be master over you, for you are not under law but under grace.
Rom 6:15; What then? Shall we sin because we are not under law but under grace? May it never be!
Rom 6:16; Do you not know that when you present yourselves to someone as slaves for obedience, you are slaves of the one whom you obey, either of sin resulting in death, or of obedience resulting in righteousness?
We can choose to obey sin, or to obey righteousness.
2Thes 1:7; and to give relief to you who are afflicted and to us as well when the Lord Jesus will be revealed from heaven with His mighty angels in flaming fire,
2 Thes 1:8; dealing out retribution to those who do not know God and to those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus.
2 Thes 1:9; These will pay the penalty of eternal destruction, away from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of His power,
There is a penalty for disobedience.
Heb 5:9; And having been made perfect, He became to all those who obey Him the source of eternal salvation,
Again, it seems eternal salvation depends on obedience.
1 Pet 1:2; according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, by the sanctifying work of the Spirit, to obey Jesus Christ and be sprinkled with His blood: May grace and peace be yours in the fullest measure.
1 Pet 4:17; For it is time for judgment to begin with the household of God; and if it begins with us first, what will be the outcome for those who do not obey the gospel of God?
1 Pet 4:18; AND IF IT IS WITH DIFFICULTY THAT THE RIGHTEOUS IS SAVED, WHAT WILL BECOME OF THE GODLESS MAN AND THE SINNER?
Judgment begins with those who belong to God. There are those who obey Him and those who don't. There is a price for those who do not obey.
Rom 6:17; But thanks be to God that though you were slaves of sin, you became obedient from the heart to that form of teaching to which you were committed,
What are some things that show disobedience? Of course disobedience is the opposite of obedience. You are either a son of obedience or a son of disobedience.
Eph 2:1; And you were dead in your trespasses and sins,
Eph 2:2; in which you formerly walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, of the spirit that is now working in the sons of disobedience.
Eph 2:3; Among them we too all formerly lived in the lusts of our flesh, indulging the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, even as the rest.
Col 3:5; Therefore consider the members of your earthly body as dead to immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and greed, which amounts to idolatry.
Col 3:6; For it is because of these things that the wrath of God will come upon the sons of disobedience,
Col 3:7; and in them you also once walked, when you were living in them.
Col 3:8; But now you also, put them all aside: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and abusive speech from your mouth.
Col 3:9; Do not lie to one another, since you laid aside the old self with its evil practices,
Heb 4:5; and again in this passage, "THEY SHALL NOT ENTER MY REST."
Heb 4:6; Therefore, since it remains for some to enter it, and those who formerly had good news preached to them failed to enter because of disobedience,
Heb 4:7; He again fixes a certain day, "Today," saying through David after so long a time just as has been said before, "TODAY IF YOU HEAR HIS VOICE, DO NOT HARDEN YOUR HEARTS."
Heb 4:8; For if Joshua had given them rest, He would not have spoken of another day after that.
Heb 4:9; So there remains a Sabbath rest for the people of God.
Heb 4:10; For the one who has entered His rest has himself also rested from his works, as God did from His.
Heb 4:11; Therefore let us be diligent to enter that rest, so that no one will fall, through following the same example of disobedience.
The thing about obedience is that it's choice. You can choose to obey someone or not to obey them.
Luke 6:46; "Why do you call Me, 'Lord, Lord,' and do not do what I say?
Are you someone who professes to call Jesus your Lord, but you don't obey Him?
Now of course none of us are 100% obedient, 100% of the time. That's where grace comes in.
But grace is only given to the obedient and repentant.
