@Marly

Yes, resentment is a horrible thing....it can eat us up and is so destructive

Commit all feelings of resentment to the Lord as soon as they arise
Turn bitter and resentful thoughts into prayers for the individual who has offended you
Ask the Lord to make your heart burn with love and compassion rather than bitterness

And trust that He will enable you to do this

Look to the Lord......

Who, when He was reviled, reviled not again; when He suffered, he threatened not; but committed Himself to Him that judgeth righteously:
1 Peter 2:23

For consider Him that endured such contradiction of sinners against Himself, lest ye be wearied and faint in your minds.
Hebrews 12:3

We ASK our Father God in the name of JESUS CHRIST to take it out and replace it with LOVE and Truth. He will by Faith if we truly want to please Him and have this junk removed . My ex used to have fits because of what Her Dad did and hated Him. after praying that? She no longer had those fits.
God only wants us to go to Him in faith and ask. We Always want His perfect will in our lives and too live the life our lord has lived while on earth. God wants us full of joy and at peace and no fear in our lives. This is God perfect will for each of us.
But ,He will allow us to suffer in His permissive will . but that Not His perfect will for us.

It all boils down to surrendering your life to Christ, allowing the Holy Spirit to work on your heart and helping you to forgive AND love your enemies. This process is sanctification.

Maybe I can sum up my point with these two verses coming right out of our Saviors mouth.

John 15:12
“This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you.

Luke 6:27
“But I say to you who hear, Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you

Hi Marly, that is a very interesting question. "How can I be really free of resentment in my heart."

It seams to me, human feelings can get the better of us, even when we know we should not dwell on resentful and bitter feelings. We know they are wrong and even harmful. Yet, some how, they simmer away in the back ground. When it comes to forgiving someone close who has really hurt our feelings, causing anger, resentment, hurt, betrayal, etc, it can be very difficult.

However, in Matthew 18:21, 22, (NIV), Peter came to Jesus and asked, "Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother when he sins against me? Up to seven times?" Jesus answered, "I tell you, not seven times, but seventy-seven times." Here, Jesus is talking about a freely forgiving spirit, a willingness to forgive and not hold grudges. This begins by making a resolute decision to forgive them and managing that decision. Over time those feelings will keep surfacing, but as long as you keep reminding yourself of that resolute decision. Eventually those feelings will catch up with that decision and start to fade. Forgiveness begins with this resolute decision to forgive. You cannot hope to use your feeling to make such a decision, because of there fickle nature, they will keep changing.

Make a resolute decision in your heart that you have forgiven them, then ask for help from God's holy spirit to help you manage that decision. Over time, those hurting and betrayed feelings will fade and die. But, be prepared for your feelings to have a few fits before they die. Keep reminding yourself of the decision you made and why you made that decision, and eventually your feelings will get used to feeling differently regarding that person and what they did.
