There are many people who believe that the way you get to heaven is by "doing good deeds"; such as reading the Bible and going to church every Sunday, and praying. The Bible clearly says that doing "good deeds" will not get you into heaven. "But we are all like an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are like filthy rags." (Isaiah 64:6)
Yet there is something that the Bible calls "repentance." Repentance is something that Jesus talked about, and He made it very clear that, "...unless you repent you will all likewise perish." (Luke 13:3) And again, in Mark 1:15, John the baptist says, "The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the gospel."
Yet there are also these scriptures that seem to condemn doing the deeds of the law:
"Therefore by the deeds of the law no flesh will be justified in His sight, for by the law is the knowledge of sin." (Romans 3:20)
"Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith apart from the deeds of the law." (Romans 3:28)
So my topic is this:
What is the difference between repentance and doing good deeds? There are many people who believe that when someone talks of "repenting," that they are talking about legalism. I would like to have a clearer understanding so I can explain to those who question me. Can anyone offer a good explanation?
